badperson,
Another good song...nice to hear something just flow sometimes, with no loops or percussion. Your words always paint a clear image of the situation you're writing about...always something the listener can relate to immediately, and the honesty in your voice makes it all work.
I would love to hear some of your stuff produced by an objective, experienced producer sometime. I think you're an excellent writer with an exceptional vocal style.
Post more when you can.

Finne,
I listened to both 'Takaisin' and 'Luontoihminen'...very nice job on both mixes...nice instrumentation, and the drums on 'Takaisin' sound great. I do wish I knew your language, to understand the lyrics...but still, I enjoyed the music itself. Good job.

Jack Rabbit,
'Crown and Anchor'...what a great song...I love the chord changes...very nice, and your voice, although your own, reminds me of both Stipe and Dave Matthews...so do some things in the melody.
Hey man...I love it. Post more when you can.

Hello all,

This thread great! I'm amazed at the work you've all done. I purchased an MBox on 12/31/04, and here's my first song. It been about ten year since I recorded in a studio. I'm overwhelmed by all the new power I have. This is still a work in progress.

http://home.comcast.net/~vcerabone1/Lateral_Line.mp3

4-6 guitar tracks, and redrum. Yes, there's no bass. Not sure if I want to buy a cheap one, or find some other way. Comments are welcome. There's so much to learn, but this is a start. I'm interested in getting better at both playing and recording.

I heard some arabic nuance. Cool and different.

If you made drums with Redrum, you have atleast Reason Adapted. Subtractor is excellent bass tool.

all i would add is- the two sections with the heavy delay, did ya think about putting the delay in time with the tempo?

Vic,

I'm new to PTLE also, but for what it's worth, here is a list of bundled bass sounds I've played around with:

Reason/Subtractor/Sub Bass 1 & 2 - these are very satisfying deep, deep basses. They do sound synthy, but they are great for lower-than-low end, like on club/techno, etc.
Reason/NN-19/DBL BASS - for your bowed bass needs. A little synthy.
SampleTank/Fretless Acoustic - great bass for acoustic music, lots of cool "incidental" sounds, like strings hitting the fretboard and "pluck" noises.
SampleTank/Old Four Strings - just a classic electric bass (at least that's what I think it is). Good for Rock & Roll.
SampleTank/Solo Cello - watch out for some disparate acoustics between octaves, but within an octave this is great for ambience.

Subtractor is definitely the way to go for any funky/crunchy/electronicky/scary bass sounds you may want. SampleTank for realism. Of course, this is only what I've found so far and only on the bundled software. And of course, I think the best thing would be to buy a real bass.

Jack Rabbit 01-18-2005 12:25 PM

As clean as I can, for now...

This is as "clean" as I can get a recording right now. I used all the advice I've culled from the DUC, and retracked the acoustic guitar using a new microphone. Here it is:

This Means War

Drums: Redrum, with some midi fills
Bass: NN-19/DBL BASS
Guitars:
- Taylor 314/SM87/T-Racks
- Taylor 314 direct in/DigiRack Chorus/Amplitube
Flute: SampleTank/Indian Flute
Synths:
- Subtractor/Joshua Pad (this is a very cool organ sound)
- SampleTank/Paddington
Samples:
- I found the loon cry on the internet, then used DigiRack pitch shift to make it diatonic
Vocals:
- Cheap mic/T-Racks
- Cheap mic/very light DigiRack chorus/T-Racks (for the harmonies)

New TBR test of the new rooms.

All,
Here is another test of the new rooms. the guitars are the same setup:

TLM-103, Distressor - Pro Tools
Oktava 012, Distressor - Pro Tools
Apex 435, DIGIPRE - Pro Tools
APEX 435, DIGIPRE - Pro Tools

Vocals:
TLM-103, Vintech 1272, 1176 - Pro Tools

reverb - Lexicon PCM-90 custom room setup.

SWEETEST REASON - ROTHMAN ROUGH MIX - TBR

Very rough takes to hear the room some.
Guitars tracked first, then vocals were tracked in one take on the TLM-103.

The final will have bass, drums and I need to talk to Gene about some violin in parts. That is what they asked for.

Enjoy! i am really liking the room sounds so far. A tad bit too much on the lexicon, but overall I thnk that it is nice.

Re: New TBR test of the new rooms.

IntelDoc,

I feel like it's not very useful for me to comment on professional setups, but anyway: it sounds so great. The sound you are achieving is my goal (maybe unattainable in my guest room...with the window to the street...and the water-heater pump beneath the floor, which I'm thinking of sampling and marketing as percussion loops). Probably helps to have that Neumann. Everything is so crisp and alive, and behind it all: cemetery silence. No buzz, no hiss, nothing that is not there, and the nothing that is. Sounds like you also have the good fortune to work with some talented acts.

By the way, I could definitely use some experienced advice on getting the volume up on my final mix wav's.

Yeah ! Room sounds great. The NTK would sound good on his vocals.

Is there a little distortion on the VOX?

Awesome acoustics!

Re: New TBR test of the new rooms.

distortion??? no.... probably too compressed... threw it together fast. will check though

Re: New TBR test of the new rooms.

Thanks Finne for the comments.

Jack Rabbit, what do you have as far as plugins? You need to get the WAVES bundle with the L2 or the L3. That really helps in getting the signals up. Multiband EQ and Compressor as well. E-mail me and tell me what you have. That may help?

Also, You made me laugh at the heater comment. I too put a lot into my setup. A new Anderson THICK ASS door really helped out as my outside heater is right there. I cannot hear it at all. Also, mic placement really helps. Get that right and all should be well.

Thanks again, and good luck!

- Doc

I tried the Waves demo, and it was the first time I ever had CPU/buffer problems, so I scrapped it and decided to make the most of DigiRack. Since I'm still learning about EQ, my catch-all technique has been to put a compressor on the master and boost the gain until I'm just about to clip. Still, my wav's and mp3's are so quiet...

Intl. Colaboration \"los que hablamos Español\"

Knowing that my friends trust me, it is my pleasure to present to the people of the DUC this little and humble recording. Made with the effort of 5 different guys, living in 4 different countries, located in 2 different continents.

This first song that we have now in our hands is just the beginning of a long awaited project. It is not the best recording with the greatest musicians, the best mix, or the best song there could be... Its just a little something, from some guys with a lot of loyalty, trust to each other, and clean and honest friedship.

The guys in the group are,

Jascha (flautista) - Flute - in Chile
Alejandro Malde - Piano - in Chile
Yoko - Guitars - in Mexico
Chucktoledo - Drums and Bass - in USA
Fran de Valle - Mastering - in España
Felipe Gonzales - Mix - in Chile

We really hope to record a lot more and finish a CD. The link will download an mp3, but if you would like to get the quality wav master, let me know. We hope you'll enjoy some latin flavor.

The digirack plugs should have a limiter, which you can use to get your volume up. I would use that instead of a compressor. But I liked your song, even though I thought the drums could come up. But nice song, writing and performance.

My computer may as well be an idling lawnmower, and my apartment is on the 2nd floor with windows in every room, so there's nothing I can really do about that. A new, quieter computer should help a lot.

Doc, very nice. I love that clean vibrance. I'm wondering how much of it has to do with your mic; is that a tlm103? I get a nice sound with my ntk on acoustic, but it doesn't have that vibrance you get. Of course, with your new room, no noise, good sound, and good mics/placemnt/converters and all the rest you're really firing on all cylinders.

In your song, when the guitar really starts to strum I did feel it was over compressed, but still, a very good sound. Congratulations; I would have no reservations whatsoever about paying you money to record based on what you posted. I know you'll have lots of success. I'll look forward to hearing what comes out of your place.
