Great stuff Gene...what a very cool (and difficult for that age group) arrangement of that song.

(great engineer + Great performance) = (great recording + great enjoyment)

Well done.

This is my first post to this thread. I have put a song in the "Best of the DUC 2004". It is a song by my son Marcus' band. The band name is November Sky and the song is Operation Latte Thunder. This band has 4 members (15-17 yrs old). It was recorded in my basement studio with a Digi002r. It still has some things I need to fix, but its getting closer to being finished. This is a guitar song with some vocals. You will need to download it here Best of the DUC 2004 . Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks to Chris Cavell for taking the time to put together the "2004 Best of the DUC".

(BTW Chris, I used to live in LaPlace - right in the middle of your territory.)

Thanks,
Greg

WOW! you guys have all stepped it up a notch. all the songs on the past 4 or 5 pages of this thread have been great!
btw, Joz ---> awesome work!

i cant compete on the level you folks do, but here is what i came up with:

- - - > * * * TUFUNKENBAK * * * < - - -

(to funk and back)

if you like that song above, check out this older re-arrangment i did of a carlos gardel tango song: i call it Initial-T (initial tango)

We did all kinds of music. We had a 50-60's set of top hits. 70's sets and 80's sets of both top 40 and country music along with a few originals. Our sets were 45 mins to 1 hour long each and we would mix the sets up depending on what the customer was booking us for.

mindstat, nice work. You have a talent for making good music with humble tools, if I'm remembering an email you sent to me correctly. Very good drum programming. that's something I'm trying to get better at. Your piece had a great groove. I'm assuming most of that was looped. Did you play the guitar?

Folks,

I would like to get your input on my band's music. We are more of a melodic hardcore thing so it could be a little too harsh:

yes, "humble tools" indeed. sampled turntable one shots, sampled bass oneshots that i arranged in an elementary simpleton loop (4 notes), sample guitar that i cut and chopped up into what you hear, and the drums i also tracked with one shots. post production in sound forge. i recorded 100yr old acoustic piano on a $10 radio shack microphone and it sounds terrible.
other than that, im glad you enjoyed it. looking forward to hear your latest.

Hi Chris,I saw in an earlier post that you were having trouble getting email which may explain why I have gotten back email marked as "undeliverable" to the address on your website.
I would like to submit a tune for your project. It's nothing new as I have not even been able to sit down at the piano in almost a year but would still like to participate if that is OK.Here is my tune.

Stu,

I am not kidding; I loved this! Awesome and totally fresh! Get that to a publishing company quick. Try Pacific Electric Group. They are looking for stuff like this for their catalog.

Hey Hopeless, I like!

I especially like the vocals in the second half- from the in-your-face screaming, then singing, then the "radio" distortion - they seem more present than they did in the first half.

The doubled rhythm guitars in the first half seem kind of weird - sort of a "beating" sensation (not like with sticks, which could be appropriate - more like a tape flutter kind of thing going back and forth really fast). Is this intentional?

Thanks for sharing!

Eric

It has been a really long time.I have just been swamped at my real job that puts the food on the table thus leaving no time for creative endeavors.I have been stockpiling ideas in my head for quite a while now which usually will yield a couple of tunes.

The only thing I have done with my kids is just another Christmas tune from my youngest
I can't take any credit or the production of this one because it is simply a karaoke track that she asked me to record her vocals on.She did do a nice job though.
If you want to here it I think this link still works.

http://www.stutunes.0catch.com/SilentNight.mp3

I must confess that I did recently download a bunch of your songs onto my new laptop at work.My favorite is still Springtime Girls and Everyones a Fool which I really think is a great song.I would love to hear that tune completely acoustic with Sheryll Crow singing it.
Later Roy
Have a great Christmas

Thanks Roy. I do not typically write classical music; however, the last few weeks I have been in a different kind of mood and I wrote the following two songs.

The next batch will be more of what I normally do.

Thanks, Tom, Trace is a great talent - but his specific brand of acoustic guitar acrobatics is very difficult to record, from both performance and logistics standpoints. The fact that we were able to make it seem "easy" is a compliment, thanks!

spkguitar,

Great bridge. Did you consider moving it forward 2 (?) measures...what I mean is only three "me, myself, and I"s...[maybe nevermind: after a couple more listens, I'm not sure this is a good idea]. I like the prechorus, too. There's probably a technical term for that change of rhythm...

Other things I like:

- that little bass groove in the second verse ("calling out to me", "set me free")
- the bass under the line "I'm side by side with myself..." leading up to the solo
- the countermelody at the end
- that it doesn't fade out

Allright... here´s my Christmas Tune for your wives and girlfriends.

This is the song I was talking about in my first post. Lyrics copyrighted to Jukka Lewis, an x- bandmate of mine. All live except Pro-Toolsing like xxxx afterwards - to keep the live sound.

Guys,

To put you all, in a latin dance mood, this is a little version in "merengue" of some popular songs of the season.

It hasn't been mixed properly, some people told me that the horns are synth-sounding, any ways...
maybe Santa will deliver the session to the Cavell Studios...JO JO JO...

Merry Christmas everyone...

I have just finished the work on a website for a danish artist called Tobias Stenkjaer.

If you like Pop/Rock songs with a twist (UK Lyrics) give it a listen and let us know what you think.

The songs have been recorded using Pro Tools 001 and M-box setups (PC/Mac) + A Logic Pro 6 (Mac) setup. I will leave it up to Tobias to give you further info - he visits the forums from time to time.

Thanks Roy,

I have been learning soooo much by doing this choir. There is no way I could have had these challenges on just recording my own stuff. I might have an orchestra session in February, that would be cool.

Best wishes for a wonderful Holiday Season for you and your family also !

Hi Greg,
Your son and his band truly have a lot of potential, IMO...they just need to tighten it up, and I'm sure they will. It's a good arrangement overall...guitars are played well, vocals sound good, and best of all, you did a very good job mixing them.
Post more when you can...

this was my first pro tools session (outside of my class projects). I was previously using cubase SX and an m-audio delta 1010. this was the first time ive used my digi 001. and i only used the plugins that came with PTLE (well i dont have any others right now). and i kept it kinda raw because they're a hardcore/punk band.
