Man, thank you! I'll post the other songs as soon as I finish them (and fix the problem with the low end in my room). If by any chance you are interested in listening my old stuff I can send you a link to my drive.
Thank you for the feedback!!

Genelec 8020 , Near Field.
What I meant with "hum" is, that I cannot identify the "texture" of the bass (string/synthie/...). My ideal bass is from Pino Palladino (Paul Young) or Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel), Del Palmer (Kate Bush) : snarling, you feel the metal vibrating. Just my little personal taste. No criticism.
If you have the link, great, it would be very nice to listen to - but I always buy, if I like good music.

Yes, I might have cut too much in the high end of the bass when trying to get the keyboards and the guitar out, I guess it's my influence from Cuban audio engineers. I'll look closely to those recordings. Thank you.

I'd love to share the newest single from Amber Bowen (my wife) with all you guys & gals!

http://amberbowenband.wix.com/amberbowen#!music/c1jmr

The track is called 'Hold Tight' off our latest EP - Every Love. It was recorded at my studio and mixed by Chris Kaplinski and mastered by the indie mastering guru Noah Mintz at the Lacquer Channel in Toronto.

If you all like it, support indie music and buy the track :D Let us know what you think.

Cheers

Here is a song I composed a very long time ago on PT 8 - it is an EDM track.

I composed this about early 2008ish (MIDI)... I used the instruments and plug-ins included with the 'Pro Tools Bundle' and Instruments from the 'Pro Tools Instrument Expansion Kit' (RTAS)

...Enjoy

Regards

James

(BTW - the track has a picture of a: PIER on a beach and is titled: ''RJLD The First Spirit'' and is tagged #Techno)

Not bad, the midi sequences sounds very 80's though.

Been messing around with my own music these days, now that my wife is expecting. Here is a link to what we've got going on in Northern British Columbia, Canada.

On a side note, both tracks are mixed by another friend of mine. Fun little project we have going.

Love the sound of the drums and the guitars BUT ... Your drummer suffers from the now infamous "LarsUlrich-itus" so some parts of the song is off beat never the less I usually never listen to this type of music but you changed that for me :-)

Two Thumbs Up!

I was procrastinating a few weeks ago on writing my own material and my wife was too sick to do vocals on another track we've been working on. The result is this Blind Willie McTell cover 'Broke Down Engine'

Funny thing is over a few beers I tracked my guitar and vocals as ghosts. I ended up keeping them :P

Guitar - Taylor GS Mini, DI'd into Neve 1073
Vox - SM 58 (HA that's right), Avalon 737sp
Bass - Fender Jazz, DI Neve 1073
Drums - DW Collectors, Glynn Johns mic technique using D112 - Neve 1073LB, U87 - Avalon, Rode NT1 - interface and an additional snare bottom SM57 (I know it's not technically Glynn Johns then :P)

Left the drums with little processing to showcase the technique.

Cheers, enjoy https://soundcloud.com/fbrrecording/broke-down-engine-blind-willie-mctell-cover

:D wow man, apart from @joachim you are the first person to ask, thank you! there's not much to say, I do what I can and always have something to learn from the posts here: live drums (great sound from Dean to start with); fender Bassman/ts9/modded telecaster for all my guitars; no idea about the piano and keyboards apart from some parallel compression and distortion I put in, same goes for bass. What else you can hear? Big thanks, happy new year!

No worries, stoked to hear it's all live recording. So much programmed stuff. What I hear is some good mic technique and clean processing. What's the gear list on the recording side? Always curious to know what others are using.

How do you manage to get those super clean bass freqs!! I guess expensive gear and real talent (and a bit of school) is the answer at last. I'm following you on SC :D
The only good sounds I can get are guitars and bass, the drummer did most of his part, apart from that I have a Scarlett 6i6. I wish I had some professional sound engineer to work on my music but jazz fusion doesn't sell as much so I have to keep my eyes open and do it myself. Music first!

Ha thanks, yeah, I mean I have to admit that my bass sounds have improved drastically when I got the Avalon, then when I picked up that 1073LB it was a game changer! I highly recommend one.

If you ever need a hand on your mixes I'd be happy to help. Cheers

Hello... I have posted a song up on soundcloud, entitled: Edition dream_1_#Rhythm Track

You can find it here: RJLD Recordings

https://soundcloud.com/search?q=RJLD...tion%20dream_1

Please let me know what you think - in regards to the sonic characteristics of it, i.e.: Clarity and Energy and Weight. - I know they stream at 256kbps - however, I have the original wav.. :)

BTW - this is very old! (all music written on Pro Tools)

I think you will like it!

Regards

Re: Let's hear your latest stuff....right here

sounds like a good demo but can't get a hold on what it is. Sorry :o

And as you said it is a bit old style of sounds and all around playing style.

I only say something when people are asking so thats my thoughts. I would work on spreading out the sounds more and since you said its old maybe you should start a new song instead of trying to "fix" this one but these things are subjective so someone else might say it is a great effort :-)

jamesleonard 01-26-2016 03:02 AM

Re: Let's hear your latest stuff....right here

Firstly, thanks for the listening or critical analysis - one-of-the-two

Having listened to it being streamed on soundcloud in 256kbps - does not do it justice (especially when I am use to the 16 bit, 44.1kHz (wav) version!)

This is a 'dance track' and I am a DJ - so that is why there is heavy emphasis on the driving rhythm - hence the name 'Rhythm Track'

These problems can easily be rectified methodically (in this order) - namely:

1. Noise reduction
2. Mid side EQ/Harmonic balancing
3. Mastering reverb (although this is rarely used - but now and then it can be applied)
4. Dynamics
5. Harmonic Excitement
6. Stereo imaging
7. Maximising to increase loudness

The methods (above) are usually what I adhere too when making adjustments and... what I have wrote (below) mainly concerns: 2. Mid side EQ/Harmonic balancing.

However, because I am a DJ - when I make music (FOR THE CLUBS) it is sensible to create sounds in mono rather than stereo. Most plug-ins and hardware instruments will exaggerate the stereo spread to make individual timbres appear more impressive - but these timbres/sounds will accumulate across the stereo field and reduce the available soundstage. Therefore, I will always program sounds in mono - and this is IMPORTANT - since many clubs systems are mono!

Additionally, it is important that it sounds good in mono - and I will tell you why. If the mix has not been checked for mono compatability - it will/could sound drastically different - especially in a club, where the sound system is mono. You could lose some sounds altogether - WHEN THEY ARE SUMMED TOGETHER - think of 2 sine waves 180 degrees out of phase - they cancel each other out - result: NO SOUND!

Anyway... I could employ a mid/side processor and then mono any frequencies that are below a set threshold. Thus, if I had a wide stereo bass line, it would be possible to set the threshold to, say, 75 Hz - so that any frequencies below become mono, whilst any frequencies above remain in stereo.

The best thing for this track would be to use a mid/side processor to increase ambience - and create a mix that would be suitable for both CLUBS and STEREO SYSTEMS simultaneously! This would be achieved by placing a M/S processor after a stereo reverb unit. Since the reverberations are in stereo, the M/S processor can be used to reduce almost all of the reverb from the centre channel (typically with EQ or compression) - but leave it present in the left and right field. Since many club systems are mono, when played through a club system, there is only a small amount of reverb present - however, when played through a hi-fi or iPod system, the left and right field exhibits a larger reverb. Ideally, an EQ should follow the M/S which would allow me to further sculpt the results. (i.e.: sounds HUGE on club systems, but, sounds refined on small systems such as: car stereos and iPod systems)

Similarly, reverb could be applied to an instrument and the frequency threshold adjusted so that the reverb becomes mono below a specific frequency and remains in stereo above. This would provide a clearer sounding mix. Additionally, on a complete mix, it is possible to boost the sum information (the left and right field) whilst leaving the centre unaffected. This has the effect of increasing the stereo ambience of the music.

Another possibility is to employ a mid/side dynamics processor to home in on specific frequencies and compress the mono and stereo signals differently - so when applied to the entire mix, both the kick and bass would be compressed and consequently increased in volume compared to the side information - resulting in a much larger presence of the groove.

There are other things I can do with: MID/SIDE EQ/HARMONIC BALANCING namely: the Bass, Mid-Range, High Range and Boosts and Cuts - but... I'm not going into it here.

I'm heading off to my infrasonic monitors now...

But remember this: to make your song sound HUGE on a club system and sound refined on a small system such as a car stereo or iPod system - you will need to introduce/induce these methods.

James
