New dynamic transport/retrospective record bug?

There seems to be a newly introduced bug in Dynamic Transport. I am running PTU 2023.3:

1) Enable Dynamic Transport (CNTRL-CMD-P)
2) Record enable a midi track
3) Put transport into play
4) Play some midi notes
5) Press the record button
6) BUG: The notes that were played (and stored in the retrospective buffer) are retrospectively recorded (without pressing option-shift-Z). This is erroneous behavior, these notes shouldn't be inserted in the clip unless explicitly told to do so with the retrospective record key command. There is no way to turn this new behavior off.

This effectively bricks Dynamic Transport and loop recording workflows.

This behavior occurs on both of my machines that are running PT 2023.3. I tried on new sessions, with different preference settings, etc. It does not occur on previous versions.

Re: New dynamic transport/retrospective record bug?

Can someone please try the workflow in the above message to verify that Dynamic Transport is indeed broken? I would like to know if it's just my machines that exhibit this behavior.

Dynamic Transport is essential for loop based workflow in Pro Tools, and it's loss is a show stopper for efficient loop-based recording.

Re: New dynamic transport/retrospective record bug?

Thanks Jesus, I apologize for the delay, I was out of town for a week. I have uploaded a video of the behavior here:

https://youtu.be/_ZYV2otv8go

It turns out that the same thing happens in regular loop record too. I initially didn't check loop record because I always loop record MIDI in dynamic transport. It doesn't happen in non-loop recording.

The problem is that punching into record while looping causes a retrospective recording to take place.

(It wasn't clearly stated in the video, but shift-option-Z is the command for Retrospective Record)

I'm having this same issue and it's driving me nuts and getting in the way of flow. Running PT 2023.3. You're the only other person I've seen mentioning this. What's going on? Anyone have a solution?

Same problem here, extremely frustrating.

Re: New dynamic transport/retrospective record bug?

I find it odd that we are the only 3 people that are experiencing this bug. Or perhaps we are the only people who use MIDI loop recording. I am beginning to think that are the only 3 people still using Pro Tools :-D Perhaps we should try to find out what our setups have in common, in case there is a setting that causes this behavior (I doubt that).

My setups on which the bug occurs:

Hackintosh running Big Sur
AVID MTRX Studio
S1's and Dock

MacBook Pro 2015 running Monterey
UAD Interface

Both brand new OS installs and new PT installs and working perfectly for years in every version of PT.

(by the way MountCyanide, I follow you on Instagram, I enjoy the electronics builds that you post!)

Just noting that the MIDI buffer bug is still here in 2023.6.

Re: New dynamic transport/retrospective record bug?

After a quick test in 2023.9 I'm very pleased to find that this is now fixed.

It's also mentioned in the bug fixes in the release notes.

"Fixed a problem that occurred resulting in MIDI being retroactively populated while punching in during loop playback (PT-302656)"

That is great news! Now we can go back to "non-stop creativity" to borrow NI's phrase.

Thanks for the head's up MKS-80.
