Re: Asian Sun - complete piece.

thanks Roy,

yeah, I'll do some more drum stuff over the week. These are midi drums done on my old korg x3. Drum programming isn't my forte, plus I'm super lazy. Usually I get an 8 bar section and just copy it over and over because I want to get to other parts of the song.

I wasn't nuts about the vocal, so I wanted to give it an "understated" ( ) place in the mix, but I'll do another one and bring it up.

Thanks for the feedback!

I've got one more, it's called "convince me." Same link as my post above.

Anyone using the tlm 103 for vocals, i'm trying to find as many examples as possible before I purchase a mic, thanks.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi Adam
I'm using the TLM-103 and for our vocalist it works really well... but lots of people don't like it at all. It seems to be a very flat "vanilla" sounding mic and I think that's what some don't like. It'll show up what's bad about your voice/instrument, whereas many people like a little coloration to cover up certain imperfections
I've also heard it said that they they DON'T like budget preamps, so there could be something in that too.

You can listen to one of my tracks HERE but note that this was our test track when I first got the mic, so it's just a quick one take with not much thought gone into it. The TLM is on the vocal and the acoustic, and the preamp used is a Buzz Audio SSA1.1
Also note that I have not eq'd anything. i've only used some compression and verb.
There are other tracks on that site, but all the others are pre-TLM days.
Hope this helps you.

Hi all,

We've decided to post the first two works of our brand new studio

This two song are written by a young local singer ... for him we have made, tracking, mixing, mastering and also production and arrangement ...

For all the song the drum are by Drum Kit From Hell Superior, mastered with Ozone3

Mic for the vocals the NT1a by Rode ...

Everything else by Digi

We wait for yours comments ...

Re:

bertog,
Just listened to 'Le Parole Restano'...this is the first post here from Italy that I recall (Welcome... )...I like the song...the verse chords are unique and wicked...the guitar solo sounds a bit too distant, but you did a really good mix overall, in my opinion.
Will listen to 'Lei Cantava la Canzone' next.

Re:

Hi Roy,

Thank you very much !!

About the solo ... we have tried to search a different sound using a lot of effects on it, because we tried to add a little "confusion" (in italian we say ... casino ... ) and not a true guitar solo ...

Thanks again.

bertog,
Just heard 'Lei Cantava la Canzone'...another good job on the mix. Very unique production, and it's interesting to listen to lyrics in Italian. Good luck with your studio, and post more when you can.

Wow, what a fun night for me. My daughter's high school choir had it first Choral Concert of the year tonight. These kids are just a wonderful bunch of kids. One of the sub groups of the chorus are called the Madrigal Singers, my daughter being in it. In order to get into it, you have to audition a few pieces that are suggested, then you have to be tested on sight reading and then ear recall of up to 9 note patterns that the director plays and you have to sing it back. The result, is the following: (Mind you these kids are 14-17 years old)

Re:

Hey everybody, I have a slight problem here.
I have been downloading all of the songs you guys put up ever since Roy started this thread. And for a good reason.
I mix live sound for a living. Check out the link at the bottom of this post to see our rig(the site hasn't been touched in over 2 years, and we have grown! We've been busy). We do all kinds of concerts and festivals over the course of the year. Rock, country, folk, you name it. If I am not given some filler music to play by the promoter or festival staff during the band changeovers, I put in what I want. And most times, I put in your music. I think most mainstream acts have had enough exposure, and me playing them as filler isn't really doing anything for them. But it could be helping you.

My problem?

I don't know who you are! Almost all of the songs I have downloaded just have the song title. Some not even that. You need to take the extra effort and add all of the title/artist information when you create the file.

How does this help you?

You would not believe the number of people that come by FOH every show asking who and what music is playing. And I don't know what to tell them.
At the very least, you have a fan of your music that doesn't know who you are. Even worse, if you have CDs, you are probably missing out on a sale or 10.
Do me and yourself a favor and fill in all of the information.
Thanks,
Mitch

Chris Cavell 10-15-2004 06:29 AM

Re:

It could help them in more ways than that Mitch:

If you keep a tab of the tunes you play as filler and write up a small page that says what you played, who it was by, when and where, sign it and send it to the artist...that artist can count it as a "performance" as a member of ASCAP and receive a small lump of money! Other things that count as performances: bands covering your tune, radio play, ads, etc...

After three performances you start seeing "bonus" checks from ascap too!

Ascap has many other benefits as well.

Chris

Thanks Roy. It's not a line array, but our rig does the job quite nicely. Like I said earlier, the website hasn't been touched in 2 years. We are up to a 48 box system now(24 3way tops and 24 dual 18" subs), powered by 10 QSC Powerlight 4.0s and 3 PL2.0s per side. If nothing else, it can get loud!
In the 5 years I have worked here, we have only gone as far east as Arkansas, but never say never. My boss is a selling fool, and we never know where we could be next.
You really are a very talented musician and I would love to mix you live sometime. Great players using good gear makes my job mixing a breeze.

Cool website. Awesome design.

Album sounds good! You guys are very talented. Great Production.

I see a picture of what looks like the mastering house, who did the mastering?

I really like Malarial(pearl jam vibe), Blood, Tell Me, Drifted(motown in a rock sort of way feel),Slowly Fade away(Awesome song- radio single material)

Your house looks like it was a fun place to record. Cool pictures.

Has a temple of the dog/Candlebox/Led Zepplin feel to it. That is a sweet sound.

Duccies - take a listen to this one!

hey thanks so much for checking out the record and giving us feedback. to answer your question our album was mastered by a guy named eddie schreyer at Oasis Mastering down in studio city, LA. hes done alice in chains, incubus, korn, queen, a perfect circle, spinal tap and many others. he did an amazing job with it and we were quite happy with the results. thanks again

Re: Pro Tools LE is great!!!!!

Not sure if I posted this one before, but I just re-recorded the bass then remixed and mastered the whole thing. I think it's about as done as possible.

I wrote the song and lyrics, and am playing rhy guitars, drums, and bass.

I had some friends do the vocals and some additional guitar work.

Thanks for listening!

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

This is a band I have been working with for more than a year now, production has been slow, due to our crazy schedules, but I just completed their first music video. Recorded, mixed, filmed, edited, produced all on my mac, written by the band. A better quality video will be on the site soon, so bare with the super compressed version for now.

Okay...I've been a bit bummed lately...coming to this thread a couple times a week looking forward to hearing the new stuff...

Where is it guys?!

In the spirit of trying to pick up the pace here a bit...I propose we put together a project to make a "Best of the DUC 2004" album. I'll take the raw bounces, put a quick master on them, and post them to a page so people can vote on which are the best (if we get enough submissions that eliminations are required...else they'll all be included). (I may need some help designing the page, but thanks to Roy I've now got the space for such a thing.)

Once the tracks are decided, I'll fully master the compilation and send copies to anyone involved for the cost of materials and shipping. There is also a chance I could upload a wavelab montage that people could download and burn their own identical copies. Once the tunes start rolling in I'll think up a good deadline. It's best if the tunes are your own or if not you're own, have been granted permission for this use.

If you're interested or have a song you'd like to submit, shoot me an e-mail: chriscavell(at)cavellstudios.com

(Don't worry if you don't have a place to host the song...I'll find a place you can upload it.)

So, what do you guys think?

Thanks,
Chris

Nice Logo bar on your site.. Where'd ya get it? uhh..where...what ..who meeeee?

The drums i use for the last 4 projects are Drums on Demand.I have tried a lot of different software and loops of all kinds and never really happy until i came across www.drumsondemand.com. I love the way they sound and i feel more creative with them. Highly recommend them.I use VOL.1 and VOL.2.

The guitar on Blank Minds is direct going through Behringer V-AMP Pro. I believe it is preset C-20 called Insane. It actually has a couple useful preset for guitar but still have not found a decent bass sound with it.lol I am playing my Schecter on that one.

I put another rough mix up for you Doc to check out.It is called Sneeze. I did it with a nylon string guitar, Mbox, laptop, and a Peavey PVM22 mic on the road in a hotel room about year ago.
I thought the guitar sounded pretty cool.

Thank's again

Thank's Roy

As for the guitar i am using Yamaha Majicstomp.Giving it tryout. Chuck Campbell(Campbell Brothers Sacred Steel Guitar) gave it to me over the summer and i am just getting around to it. I don't care for distortion preset but clean preset sound pretty good so far.

Thank's again

Do you want us to put in the primary effects?
Any preferred format?
Preferred song length?

Re: Pro Tools LE is great!!!!!

To SNS (and anyone else considering submitting something for this endeavor):

Only one taker so far but it's early (Well, if you count me, that's two...but you've all heard it already so I haven't reposted it yet...I'll wait for my little voting website to put it up again.)

For submissions, mp3's are perfectly acceptable during the pre-decision/voting phase. If you'd like, I'll take a file and put a very quick "rough" master on it for this phase.

Once tunes are picked for the album, I'd like to get the stereo (or dual mono) pcm bounce (that's a *.pcm, *.wav, *.aiff, *.sd2, or any other type of pcm file). As far as what I prefer for mastering: I'd like to make sure that the bounces are NOT CLIPPED but still above -6 dBfs at the peaks, and 24 bit files are preferred. Also, try to bounce at the same sample rate as the session...but if this takes up too much space and you need to SRC on the bounce, make sure to choose the "tweak head" algorithm and process "after bounce". As for compression on the 2-buss...it is not unusual or even unorthodox to compress the two buss at the mixing stage...just don't go overboard and be sure to check your levels pre and post plugin for any possible clipping.

As for song length...it doesn't really matter to me...less than 7 minutes will probably be fine...but we should try to keep it around 5 or less to allow the most people to get their stuff on the album; you know, let's have some consideration for the other participants.

I encourage ALL genres and music stylings for this project...the more the merrier!

Cheers,
Chris

just a thought!

Re: Pro Tools LE is great!!!!!

Good idea BP...(got your e-mail by the way...very nice tune!).

I've gotten three so far and am hoping for something along the lines of 12 to 14 going on the final disc. So....where are the rest of you guy's??? I'm sort of expecting to see something from each of the regulars. How 'bout you Gene: I think a choral recording would be great for the diversity of the project! Doc...you gonna pull out the greatest porn tune of all time or what? Roy, you could probably submit a few tunes...some solo stuff and a collab or two...I hope you've got something in the works.

I'll wait a day or two before deciding to create a seperate thread for it...basically I'm trying to give the regular participants of the Let's Hear it Here thread first shot at this. There are a lot of genres out there we don't see here too often but would be great if they came out of the wood-work for this: rap, hip-hop, pop, country, bluegrass, classical, trance, lo-fi, etc. The tunes don't have to be new per se...just a tune you'd like to submit. On that note, if you heard something here you'd like to see on the disc that was posted by someone other than yourself, feel free to e-mail me and "nominate" them. I'll do my best to get in touch with the artist/engineer about it.

Cheers,
Chris
