Jimbo- those guitars sound great. Care to tell us how you did it and what type of PT set up you are using?

Thanks for the kind comments matey,

um, briefly...

Mac G5 with PTLE 7.3
Digi002Rack

Miked up with two condenser mics (an SE2200 and AKG c3000b).
One mic in via my Focusrite Voice Master (for the preamp) and the other straight in...

Most of the sound is natural recording, just a little EQ and compression, of course - oh, and a splash of reverb.

:-)

Darney,
Photography is just spot on. I always screw the pooch with sparse instrumentation where trying to create mood and space is the focus. In Between Things and High Fidelity too -- everything I hear is just first rate with "that" sound that seems to be the signature today (Keane, Youth Group, etc.). The material and artists are not too shabby either, but the production shines on these. When I listen to these and A/B against my stuff I so have to fight the urge not to chuck my gear out the window. But it's also inspiring to know you're getting these results -- albeit with vastly more skill, and I'm willing to wager some better outboard gear -- on a platform not too dissimilar to mine.

Question, how were the vox recorded? What chain -- mic, pre and comp/eq, etc. And, did you master? If so, can I ask with what?

Again, excellent stuff. I'm thinking I might be hearing from these guys soon.

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the kind words, it means a lot!

The vocals were recorded with a Sterling ST66 tube mic. The mic pre was just the built-in preamp of a Behringer Eurorack MX3242X (!!!).. the limiting/compressing was done using an OLD stereo MXR Dual limiter (circa 1980), and later smoothed out in the mix with the Bomb Factory BF76. The only EQ applied was the De-esser that Digidesign provides with ProTools.. unless it was a telephone effect.. for that, I used the T-Racks that ships with ProTools.

In Between Things - the vocals were recorded clean... then the track was duplicated, crushed all to heck with some extreme compression and Gleetchplug's D-Rive (freebie) was used for the distorted vocal.. clean and distorted mixed together for flavor.

The delays on the songs were created by a TC Electronic M300 (cheap) via the S/PDIF in a buss send, and the reverbs were simply variants of the D-Verb that comes with ProTools.

I think the key to the sound I'm getting is the result of submixing the drums and using Steven Massey's L2007 limiter (It blows away Maxim and it's cheap) on the submix out. Go to his web site and buy his plug-ins! They're great and he's a really nice guy.

Final mastering was done using jk-limo5 multiband limiter/distortion (a pluggo freebie, btw), an Aphex 204 (also cheap) and that's about it.

Yeah, I'm pretty pumped by this project. I produced their first CD (Sounds Like A Story) and I think these guys are going to be heard after this new one.

Don't believe all the hype about having to use $2,500 preamps and crap.. that's nonsense. The key is a decent mic in a good location on a tuned instrument and a song worth recording.

Don.
I'll be checking out your stuff too!

Wow. That's amazing. Pro results with "pro-sumer" gear. I shudder to think what you'll accomplish in a "real" studio. Although, I think you'd probably get great results with a tape recorder and a Radio Shak mic.

Don't feel obligated to punish your ears with my racket. I just make noize for myself and anyone unfortunate enough to be a friend. But any critique and advice is welcome.

I've been to the Massey site before and have heard nothing but great things about him and his plugs. In fact, I think he's also mainly responsible for the Trillium Labs verbs as well. However, I got the McDSP Project Studio bundle and I LOVE them. In fact, I want to save up and get the full native bundle suite. Although, I think I'll be looking at that Massey Limiter too. I mean it's just so affordable.

Again, I'm floored by the quality of your work.

Hi.

I started producing/engineering for this artist, and kinda became part of the band.
"Victory" is the single off the album.
I can post better quality audio if anyone wants to hear "non-crappy-myspace" versions lol.

New Songs. Please critique if at all possible. I'm still using my 001/6.1 on my old P4 PC to record my tracks. This year, I plan on purchasing an MBOX Micro giving me access to 7.4! Drag and drop editing baby!!!

Downhill - interesting song... but somewhat muddy I think... I don't hear much definition in the instruments. Sounds like the basic tracks are recorded well, but overall.. midrangy (is that a word?).

Unabashadly Political Song - better mix on this one! Still a little 'cloudy'...

Play In The Rain - Not too shabby.. high end on the vocals is missing..

Overall... lack of high end clarity.. some interesting stuff going on musically.
