Pro Tools v5.1.3 Crash When Closing Session

I'm using an Apple Power Mac G4 933MHz with 768 MB RAM and OS 9.2.2.

I have an intermittent problem with closing sessions. Sometimes they close just fine, sometimes the system will crash.

I have tried the following:
-Mac OS base extensions + Digidesign extensions
-trash Finder, Pro Tools, DAE, and DigiSetup Prefs
-zap PRAM
-rebuild Macintosh HD desktop

Since none of these are erradicating the problem, it must be with the Pro Tools application.

Any ideas? Also, if I were to get a STDLOG of such a crash from MacsBug, is there someone or somewhere I can send it?

If you are using firewire drives, they may not be formatted right. Run DiscWarrior.

I am not using firewire drives, so that is not the culprit. Any other suggestions (digi)?

Hi Chief Technician ,

have you tried it with PT 5.1.1 or 5.1.3 cs 2?
The first 5.1.3 was a flop. Lots of bugs. For example no convert from 44.1 to 48 kHz.

regards

So, I'm posting to this again to get it back on DigiTechSupport's radar.

Any suggestions digi? What about an STDLOG from MacsBug?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">When the system crashes, is it a full freeze or is an error message posted? If an error is posted, what does it read?

In the meantime, I have seen behavior such as this caused by a System Drive that was formatted with a third party disk utility. Reformatting the drive with Apple Drive Setup and installing the Mac OS and Pro Tools software from scratch resolved the problems.

Brent,

It's a full freeze. The mouse doesn't even move. No error message of any kind appears. That was why I was asking about STDLOGs. I know I'll get one when it crashes, but I don't know if it is of use to you in trying to solve this problem. The drives were formatted using Drive Setup, so that is unlikely to be the problem.

Since this behavior is ony evident with specific sessions, can you see any differences (such as plug-ins, clock settings, session length, track count, etc) common to the sessions that freeze the system and ones that don't?

As Wellnitz suggested earlier, you might want to download one of the Pro Tools 5.1.3cs releases and see if anything changes:

Re: Pro Tools v5.1.3 Crash When Closing Session

Downloaded and installed 5.1.3cs4. Crashing is occuring in different operations now.

For example, if I open a session that has a different playback engine setting and I choose to switch the playback engine, I immediately freeze.

If I choose not to change the playback engine, sometimes I freeze while restoring tracks or activating inserts. Neither of which is consistent in that it's never always the same insert or same track when it happens.

I understand that this information is somewhat vague, but it is as specific as I can be right now.

Any new suggestions?

I've had very similar problems during the last few days. I am using PT 5.3.1, however. Today when I shut down my machine, Norton told me that I have some problems with one drive. So I think the behavior may be drive related, have to run Disk Warrior tomorrow. Have you checked your drives with any utility lately?
