Here's a new mix of Heart Sing.

I'm as done as I'm gong to be in the near term with this, I nudged the drums as people here recomended, and the nice folks on nikki's forum gave me some good feedback. I have a couple more I'm working on this weekend, Hope to post in a couple days.

Everything that's been posted here has been great, Chris, was that you with the jazz trio? that's the best one yet, actually all your stuff was terrific, I'd definitely pay for your quality of work.

Lots of great stuff here.

scottedog,
Man, I love 'All is Fair'...it's great, and the vocals are cool because the honesty comes across so well (much better than perfect pitch with no feel). The simple instrumentation and the arrangement are great. 'Bobo's Oboe' is cool too...very interesting piece.
Well done, IMO.

Eddie D,
Just listened to both 'Touch' and 'Uh Oh'...quite a genre gap between smooth, mellow jazz and rap...nice job on both recordings...Is your friend/instructor the sax player on 'Touch'? Good job.

This is interesting...done with existing samples I've created. It's raining here today, so...perfect setting for this.

Hiya Roy,

Thanks for checking them out. Yes, the sax player is my audio instructor (Bill Simmons) at Southern Ohio and is also a member of the group Midnight Star. Not sure if you know or remember the song Freakaziod but he also co wrote that and played the keyboards. So I feel pretty fortunate:) to say I have had a chance to record and mix his stuff.

I have been on here for a good six months and am always dl peoples work here including yours and this is a great thread to post music. I just never knew how to get my stuff out there on the web for people to hear till I saw someone recently direct others to the yahoo briefcase.

I use this thread as a tool and watch the comments on mixes and see if I hear the same things sorta ear training. Very talented people here. I dont comment on here I just listen and try to get pointers, when I get more experience I will throw my 2cents in:) As far as peoples creativity on here its amazing.

Thanks again
Eddie

badperson,
The new mix of 'heartsing' is much improved from the first mix snippet I had managed to download. It's a good song, good lyrics...anxious to hear what's next.

check out nikki's forum for the "overcompression spanking" I recieved, some great advice. I'm ftp'ing the session to Chris Cavell as we speak, I'll look forward to see what he does with it.

Bigfoot Moon

Alright. I'd like to register a complaint with the appropriate authorities. That song Bigfoot Moon is going to be stuck in my head for DAYS! That bass line is an inexorable object that crushes everything in it's path, and the lead guitar is so rude it makes Ron Jeremy seem couth! Nice, nice job dude. I'd give my first born to lay down some live drums on that mofo.

Well, knowing Roy as I do, you'd probably only have to give him your email address and he'll happily send you a copy on the tracks without drums.

Roy is the DUC's resident collaborator LOL

ire21,
Thanks for the comments on 'Bigfoot', especially the 'rude' guitar part...now, that's my kind of complement... ...I'de like to hear a real drums version of it. Send me an email(click my name) when you can and I'll do you a quick mix, sans drums.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Trying to keep up with all the stuff posted lately.

Roy I really dig Bigfoot Moon. It's got a groove like a slow train full of heavy-weighted wrestlers coming over to settle an argue once and for all, but in a positive way. Really. The guitar work is marvellous, in one word.

Chucktoledo I'm listening to Me quiere a Mi. Not really my type of music but it's certainly moving. I mean no dull moments in the song. About the mix, all I can say is that for a rough mix it could be much worse. Maybe some instruments jump out a bit too much, guess you can bring them some more together but then again it certainly sounds lively.

So far my impressions, I DL'd most of the latest songs but now I have to keep track on which song was from whom. No big deal there's a way for that.

Good luck all

Voideco 07-06-2004 07:08 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Some snippets for the time being. The only thing that matters here is the guitar, drums are midi, very simple pattern played by hand on a midikeyboard, quantised. Bass is a VSTi. Comments on the guitarparts are welcome.

Virtual Jam

Oh and another concept: Destiny's Decision

When I have my western back I'm really gonna make this song big, I need the guitar for the beginning of the song. What you hear now is the chorus, so the song actually falls in in the middle. Made with Cubase & 001, used a whole bunch of VSTi's, for the bass, the one note melody line and the bass drum. I used Cubase for rewiring Reason, it's got a sample from Steps Ahead, cd 'Magnetic', guess the loop is a bit muffled back in the mix. A very low pitch one note trigger of the same sample sounds like thunder, it's all through the song. Anyway ...... Only thing that I really care about for now with this song is the mix, but any kind of comments and/or criticism is welcome (apart from the song being too obviously a fragment and not arranged yet in anyway). Oh and the vocals (me) need some autotune.

Best regards,
Walther

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

da Basstard,

Thanks man, I did not make the beat,,,, not sure who did that for them? I just mixed it and recorded the vocal tracks for them. The funny thing is they have been tryin some of the bigger studios around town paying $60-$70 an hour to record and coming home with stuff they didnt like. A friend of a friend sent them my way and for 20 bucks an hr the sound they get from my setup was what they have been looking for, so now we are making plans to do the whole albumn here. Hopefully they can send some more business my way. I need to find the time to learn how to use sampletank and reason to start experiment making some of my own tracks. For now just recording and mixing vocal and music tracks is all I do. I use the studio at school to record full bands and mix here also.

Thanks again for checking it out.

pk,
Man, what a great piece...I think it's the best thing I've heard you do...very cool throughout and it never lets up...the 'classical music piece' you mentioned must be 'The Nutcracker' (right?), because there is a slight hint of it here and there. But this is an excellent piece in itself...great job on the production.

That is very cool indeed. Not a weak spot in it. And the slack timing on the trumpet is perfect!

Thanks Roy and everyone else for the comments,

indeed some of the melodies are pretty much directly from Nutcracker. The trombone was already recorded by a friend of mine, as were some of the drums, I built the rest of the song around what was provided to me.

Thanks again...

I dig the sound very old school vibe. Why did you decide to pan the vocals so hard to the right. I think that it would work a lot better in the center man. Can you rebounce and try that for us?

It is a very old Police meets the CLASH sound but the vocals do not do it for me on the left like that... I think that CENTERED will really bring it out.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Doc. Thanks and I agree. Actually that song was recorded from the board at the Metroplex in Atlanta around 1990! It was recorded to a cassette tape and probably a couple of additional generations of tape; then to a CD; then I converted it to a wav file and imported it to PT then bounced to an MP3. Poor song has been through hell. Anyway it's been a stereo 2-channel since the get go so the vox is stuck on the left. BTW the singer is David Patterson- guitarist for the Shawn Mullins band. I just thought I'd post it to check out this forum. I've been recording new songs using protools, remixing old 8-channel 1/2" stuff and other old songs form tapes and CDs. Check out the URL for other songs. I'll try to post something new soon.

Thanks again!

Mike

Cool! Glad that you are a GA guy. Used to live in Atlanta. Went to UGA... Had a blast. Worked at Attina's music for awhile and hung with a band called Dirt Circus.

Good deal on the tune... Thought that it sounded like a tape.

I agree with the guy out in the booth...4 hookers are better than one any day...

'attila2' is killer......all elements of it sound great. Vocals, guitars, drums, bass, and the mix itself. Great job...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

All,
Here is a new band I have been working with. Not quit finished, but so far so good. Vocals are a tad off I think, but they need a quick demo. Trying to get it to them as soon as I can without delivering crap. Gotta get the initial tom hits better too. Sound a little flat.... or lifeless....

We have 3 other songs that are a lot different than this.... Very "A Perfect Circle" like. I will try to get them out later....

Any ideas would be great.....

HOOKSTAR

Oh ya, used strip silence and sound replacer to correct the kick and snare (did not like them) and I think it made a fuller approach to the drums.

Tell me what ya think....

Thanks,
- Doc

Sounds good. Maybe those Vox need a double?

My only comment is that it sounds a bit boomy...maybe the bass and kick need a little eq?

What's up doc?

These are all maybies. (is that a word?)...its just my ear.

No no... That is what I think too. This was a quick mix... Going to really work it tonight... Her voice needs to be autotuned but I hate that thing...

I may try the doubler on it... Something... And the bass is my room problem probably. Need to tone it down a notch...

Thanks, back to work I guess..

hey doc,

Song 2 is cool. i know its only a rough mix so im not gonna comment on that, but right around 2:48 the vocals need a little bit of tuning, as well as a few other spots.
otherwise, very cool, i'd love to hear the other songs...

Mike! Now you are talking like a homeboy! I played the same places!
I listened to a couple of tracks from your webpage and it sounds great. Verrrry familiar. I bet we played a show on the same night once or twice, and I do recall some of the stuff you did with Ron and Jim. Did Ron ever contact you??
