External Hard Drive Disk Cache
Hey folks just a simple question. How does an external drive's "disk cache" or "disk buffer" affect performance with Pro Tools and VIs? I'm getting myself a new audio drive and converting the current one to storage and this is something I've never really paid attention to.
For example OWC has a 500GB drive with a 16mb cache then a 1TB with a 32mb cache. I know a while ago smaller was better for audio drives but with how technology has progressed it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal. The drive I currently use for audio is a LaCie 1TB Quadra with a 16mb cache and I really have no issues running sessions so I was thinking the 500GB would be fine however I still want to know the advantages/disadvantages of choosing one disk cache size over another. As far as what I do at my house with Pro Tools is mainly tracking guitar/bass via DI, vocals, VIs, editing, and mixing. Not doing any multi track recording and not really planning on it for a while. |
