Hey Roy,

Sorry this is no guitar music, but I just finished up the Choral Concert of my daughters high school and completed the CD and DVD for the choir director. I just had to post one last song from the concert. Man to believe that these kids are 14-18 years old, I'm still amazed. Thank you for taking the time to listen.

http://www.ehmz.org/Gallery/songs/12_Stars.mp3

On a recording note, the choir director is requesting my services for a studio recording of her kids. So I am pleased that she likes my work !

Take Care,
Gene

Chris, great work on that live jazz show. I'll listen to all of them and tell you if I recognize any of the tunes. Fantastic sound.

Rogerio, No Name is very good. Great bass and guitar sounds. Drums are reason, no?

Also, gene, very good work. I can hear the mp3 encoding a bit in that one, but very nice representation of the choir.

Jason,

What a great song! I'm not kidding. Perhaps a tad bit too much verb on the vox for my taste...but man, I really love the tune! I'd love to hear it fleshed out with some subtle production (careful not to distract from the lyrics, just some string pads or perhaps a real cello accompanying the guitar). Thanks for posting it! It's like you're describing some recent events in my life with it...absolutely love it!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

This is an original tune of mine recorded a few years ago on a non-PT system. I imported the bass, piano and drums, then recorded my friend singing all new vocals, then recorded myself doing a new guitar solo.

It's in MP3 format, encoded at 192 K, so probably cable/DSL is the way to go. The song is called "Alice," and it's a tribute to my grandmother, who died in '87.

Hope you enjoy.

Telepc- good song, great vocals

Chris- great jazz pieces, recordings sound pretty good. I realize the recording was just a test for you but still done well. Anyone else I would think they were great recordings but I've heard your real stuff so I know what you're capable of.

BP- I like the piece. cool lyrics.

you have quite a vocal range.Avery nice job on your tribute to your grandma. If you happened to watch star search this season the guy that won is a singing piano player. You remind me of him somewhat.

Thanks man! Though this project is far from 'professional' (we are both no pro musicians at all) I liked to post this one because it is something where we actually recorded something we wrote and played ourselfs. That doesn't happen that often

Trying to catch up on some listening here. So, for what it’s worth…

telepc – really nice tune, great f!@$ing singer, very funny website.

Roger – you’re awesome! Great rough mix on No Name. Really cool track with some happening changes around the middle.
I’d love to hear an expanded version of Hip Jazz. What a tease. Made me think of Herbie Hancock’s “Dis Is Da Drum” album which is one of my favorites.

Gene – wow, those are some talented kids! Nice work.

BP – yeah, man. I love “All The Time.” Reminds of something Billy Joel might have written. Though, ironically, in spite of your being in NY like BJ, it has a very southern flavor. What kind of mic are you using to record what kind of an acoustic guitar? Nice and crisp and real.

gYs – Stay Away is a cool tune. Guitars sound a little thin for my taste but I like the overall vibe of the song. Good job.

Try to get more in later, ya’ll and I should have more to post pretty soon.

I'm in rush mix mode with my band. A couple of A&R guys were at our last show and expressed interest. They want to hear our new album. Problem is, we're just in the mix phase.

We're going it alone, and need some professional criticism from folks who have some perspective and experience. We also need to get this into their hands before they lose interest.

Help!

Here's Track 1: Stoop to Kiss

All constructive criticism welcome. No egos here!

thanks.

I'm playing a Martin D-36 there. I didn't really mic the guitar and vox separately, I got a sound I liked with an ntk (thru a great river) a few feet away in mono, then I added an nt1a right near the 10th fret or so, to fill it out. I then panned to taste. I'm getting some new gear in the next few weeks, so I'll try it again.

I also agree with Chris that the verb was a little heavy.

thanks again.

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

ok........ here are some of my thoughts man:

Where is the bass guitar?
Try getting rid of that room noise by using a high pass on the overheads around 1.5k to 3k. This usually helps clean up lots of ambient noise from the other drums the overheads get.............if you're not wanting that stuff of coarse.
Where is the kick? It needs to cut through a little more
Vocals down a little
Try doing some harmonies on the vocals too....... you have lots of opportunities for it......give it a shot, see what happens.
This song really needs a strong foundation........ you've got to get the bass guitar growling good and locked with the kick. Try smoothing the mids out a little with the guitars and bring them up a touch. Low cut the guitars and let the bass guitar take its spot. i think once you get the foundation set you'll be good to go.

Thanks for the kind words on my tune folks. BTW, just so we're clear, that's NOT me singing. As I said in my post, it's my good friend, who sings lead in our band. I write the tunes and play guitar, but my producing brilliance is revealed by never singing a note. Leave it to the folks who can!

Fabulous Cracker Tones

I finally got some of our bands music up on the web. This is the first time I've been able to post any music.

All the cuts are basically live, I close mic'd everything and we just took a buch of takes. Then I mixed down the best takes. Only one of the guitar solos was an overdub. So it is all a bit rough but they have their moments and mistakes. So there are lots of rough spots but what the hell. I play 95% of the guitar solos, my friend sings. I wrote the instrumentals and he wrote all the songs with words.

We have studio sessions that are about 3/4 of the way recorded, then the mixing begins. Just remember studio cuts are on their way.

I'm working on the too much bass issue, I think a subwoofer is in my immediate future.

Ev,
I use a few different methods to get my sound, and I choose which one depending on the part I'm playing(of course). I do use a Digitech modeler sometimes, though I never use the factory presets. I edit or bypass most effects in it, and use fx plugins if I need them. If I use Amplitube, I have my own settings, and it's usually after I've played the part straight.(can't have latency while I'm recording). Those are the only 'modelers' I use sometimes. But I also often mike one of my 3 Fender amps...it just depends on the part.
A big thing for me is knowing my guitar's personality. I have a Strat that I know well and the custom guitar I had built. They're both great guitars, but I usually have in mind which one will be best for a certain part.
One thing I think is important, is not to bury the personality of a good guitar in say, pure distortion. (unless the part calls for it, but that should be rare). There's a fine line between clean and distortion, and in that place, you have the most control over a guitar's personality.
Enough rambling...
~Roy

Telepc,
Thanks for the complement...I enjoyed your song, too. Keep posting your new stuff when you can.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Roy,

My guitar on that tune, if I remember right, is a fender strat. I modified the wiring so I can flip a mini switch and the back two pickups become a humbucker. It is a cool sound to add to a strat. Other than that is is a stock american standard. I'm using that humbucker switch.

I have a Rivera Rake Reverb amp, 55 Watts?, and 2 Celestian GT75 somethings... Channel one on the Rivera is like a marshal and channel two is like a fender. The Lesbians song demands channel one!

I also have a Los LoBottom Sub made by Rivera.

I usually run a Ywang Mamsteen (Spelling??) preamp pedal. It has two knobs and a foot switch. There is a overdive and a level knob. I really like the punch it gives my overall sound and I almost always have it on, but just enough to add some punch. A lot of the sizzle comes from this little gem. Any two knob preamp stomp box should do.

The mics: A Dragonfly for the Celestian Cab and a SM57? for the sub. They were both real close for all the tracks. I was trying to get as much separation as I could.

I think I gave it some DVerb on the mix but nothing else.

That guitar solo is one of my favorites... It just came together. It is one of those that I listen to and don't quite understand how it came out of me.... I never play quite the same thing twice but I'm half tempted to sit down and learn it!

Thanks for listening and the feedback is great to hear.

Happy Plucking!

John

California was the one song I didn't record my solo live. That sound, on the lead, is a strat straight into my octopre, with a bit of Dverb. Gave it a great warm clean sound.

It's my wifes favorite song.

Hey Roy, I just searched my hard drive, but couldn't find it. I think that file was a victim of GIANT A** HARD DRIVE CRASH II.

Which sucks, because I listened to that quite a few times, and loved what you added.

Sorry.

Roy Howell 03-25-2004 10:11 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

bp,
My copy and the session I created for it were both victims of a hard drive crash too. I lost many similar type sessions that I hadn't backed up. I tried to get the exact drive twice to try switching cards in it, and both times was sent the wrong drive, so I put it on hold for awhile. In another thread, Digi posted the name of this company that resurrects files from drives like this, and according to their rep, there's a 90% chance they can recover the files on the drive, but man....they're high. Check out these prices from an email the rep sent me...

The estimate to recover data from the 60gb hard drive you described is:

* Standard 1-2 Business Day Service: $900-3900.

* Economy 5-7 Business Day Service: $500-2700.

There is a $200.00 attempt fee if the data is not recoverable.

* Priority Round-the-Clock/Weekend Service: $1800-6900, with a $400.00
attempt fee.

Our pricing is based on the drive capacity, the operating system, and
the complexity of the recovery. DriveSavers will never exceed the
maximum amount quoted."

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey Editor, thanks for listening. Sorry it took me so long to respond, I've been quite busy with non-music related things for the past couple of weeks. I'm new to PT, so I'm a little unclear about putting a close room verb on the whole mix. Do you mean bussing each individual track through an aux, or putting a verb plug on the master fader? Or neither? I think it's a great idea, I'm just not sure how to go about doing it efficiently or for that matter, correctly.

Thanks again!

And a general question to all...I want to make sure I adhere to DUC etiquette; is it expected that since I asked you all for input on my music, that I should do the same for others here...or would that be impolite seeing as I'm a PT newbie?

Quote:

Regarding: http://www.nbtmusic.com/mp3/worstsongever_roughmix.mp3
I like the over all drum sounds, especially the snare and the close room feel on them. I would put some of that close room on the whole mix, but just a tiny bit, like 1% to 3% bussed through an aux. track and returned to the mix, to tie the whole tonal balance together, so everything sounds like its coming from the same environment.

picksail 03-26-2004 12:51 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

I originally posted this song on the Gearslutz and TapeOp forums as well as, various forums within the DUC. Let me know what you think and when I do get a chance to remix, what I could do differently.

"Five Bucks Gets You Nowhere"(edit)
Composed, performed, produced and engineered by Stewart Cararas
©2004 Phlorescent Beacon ASCAP

This is a track from my forthcoming album which was included on a compilation currently being pressed.
This particular song is more of a sociological satire. The parts which sound horribly cheesy were designed to sound that way. I in no way mind being the brunt of my own twisted joke.

Unfortunately, this recording wasn't intended to be released yet. I had hoped I would have been able to re-mix it but, given the time constraints regarding this release, it was virtually impossible.

At the time I was asked to be a part of the compilation CD, I was working 12/14 hour days trying to get our studio up and running. And since the studio wasn't ready I intended to bring it to Trent Reznor's place, as he has an SSL/PTHD, and mix there. But again, f**king time constraints.

The low-end punch is something I feel is missing. This definately enters into the re-mix equation. I really, didn't want to add any 'false bass presence' to the mix because I felt that the bass guitar sounded pretty good . Albeit, I wish that I had the time to have done something. It is kind of deceiving when the theme enters just after the 'quasi-industrial ostonato' and the bottem disappears. In retrospect, I would have dealt with this by continuing with the 808s on the quarter notes during the main 7/4 theme. Next time!!

I wasn't crazy about the long dramatic fade at the end, but it seemed like an appropriate segue into the next song, which was a slow meloncholy piano peice. Come to think of it, it's a very cool song performed by Rock City Morgue, Sean Yseult's (of White Zombie fame) new band.

At the time, I had to complete the mastering of the compilation CD as my deadline was 7:30 am last Monday. This was paramout. Not only did the CD have to be out the door but, also the magazine which was hosting the CD. Boy, did I learn a thing or two about magazine publishing turn-around time. These guys don't screw around. I mean, you can delay the release of an album - but a magazine, no way. Anyway, I was cutting it very close and felt that the bulk of the mastering had to be completed before I could even begin adding my song. No way was I going to compromise the entire CD for one song; not even my own.

When I was mixing/mastering this song I felt as though it was as 'finished' as it was going to be. I left the studio at 4:00 am, 3 1/2 hours before my deadline.

This is yet another example of an ALSIHAD production. Recorded and mixed within a Digi 001 w/ Benchmark DAC-1.

I guess sometimes you gotta bite the bullet just to get some press.
