Hey, Dabasstard - That AKG C3000G is soundin' REALLY sweet. What kind of room are you in? Is it live or is it an isolated vocal booth setup?

BaSsTaRd,
Just got around to listenign to this - I missed it before. Actually, this is a cool song and a cool mix. I agree with the others that said the vocals sound good. How'd you do the piano, if I might ask? Real or synth? Which synth? Giga-Piano? Cheers, Mark
quote:
Originally posted by da BaSsTaRd!: i'm helping out a friend. i autotuned the background vocals to DEATH, so please don't expect greatness there, but the rapping is quite good (i think). could you guys help me out with some mixing tips here? its close, but not quite there. vocals were all recorded with my akg c3000b straight into 001. http://basstardz.dhs.org/j eromewhite/Jerome_White--Me_No_Like_It.mp3

|
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey MikeD, I attempted listening to your stuff but since there wasn´t a download option I couldn´t
musicsmith, I really really liked the tune and the singers´ voice. I liked the mix in the beginning a lot........but, IMHO it doesn´t work as well towards the end. I think it was the fat bass, wich is great in the beginning, but I think it takes up too much room once you get the acoustic, electric and the lead guitars going. Then again, what do I know right? |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Jorge,
Thanks for the comments. I definetely agree about the end of the song . The mix does get a lil muddy. I think it was the octave pedal on the guitars . The song still needs a lil work. We just went a lil crazy at the end. musicsmith |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
musicsmith,
no problem at all, I love this forum and I love listening to new music. I certainly enjoyed that song. I always post my honest opinion and I´m glad you can take positive criticism I would like to post my own work so that you and the rest of the guys can lend me your ears and help out whenever stuff starts to sound the same after weeks of tweaking. Problem is I can´t post them on MP3.com because most of it is other peoples´ stuff and they would kill me. If any of you guys have spare room somewhere where I could post temporarily it would me most cool. cheers, jorge |

Hey Jorge,
Sorry I didn't get back sooner, haven't had a chance for a few days. Thanks for the coments about my music, I do agree with you about the drums, you asked me if I'm the guitarrist, yes I did the guitars on that demo, and drums, and bass, and keyboard, and vocals... it really sucks to be a musician in the middle of nowhere! If you don't learn a little of everything you can't get enywhere... But I'm trying!!! Just trying!!! Thanks again. Jeff |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey Roy,
Really good idea man! This way we can listen to what people are doing with PT, and based on what I listen to I can judge my own stuff, I don't know any musicians in my area working with PT, so this is a fantastic way to find out how much better I still can get!!! Take care. My Threnody - http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/294/my_threnody.html Jeff |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Roy I just listened to Goblin Moon, She Wild and route 666.Awesome stuff.Really creative.Love your guitar sounds on Goblin. What are you using for drums?.You've really got PT down.Mixes sound great As soon as I get the MP3 exporter i'll submit something.Stut5

quote:
Originally posted by Roy Howell:
Fsilano/Frank... I tell you, 'Free' is really a good song. Those excellent guitars sound like Hendrix had he become a Christian...(lol) The vocal is nice, too. So, the drums were recorded separately? To what, just basic tracks which you redid at your studio? Anyway, very well done, in my humble opinion.

Roy Howell - Thanks man!! This song was kicking around the band for a long time as an instrumental intil one day the words just came to me as I was driving home from work. Guitars: That's my brother Victor. I usually play lead and e plays keys and rythym guitars but this is his song to rip a solo! I thought it sounded great too that's a standard 80's Strat Plus through my Bogner Shiva. Great sounding combo. Vox: I have been battling with getting good sounding vocal tracks lately experimenting with different things, mikes, etc.. Cathie is SO hard to record. She has a very cutting voice that just tears up a microphone and causes it to OD. This one was recorded with an AT ATM33R small condenser which seemed to sound best for this song out of all the mikes I have. I ran it through a Waves Ren Compressor to smooth the peaks while tracking. When I solo the track I hear a slight amount of distortion which I think is due to the fact that I had the input to the Comp a little too hot. We may try again with a AKG C3000 straight into the Digi001 (no comp) and try again to see what that sounds like. I think it is time for me to stop being cheap and break down and purchase a nice outboard mic pre Drums: The drums were recorded by John Leavell of Uriah Heap (remember them?) at his studio - Leavell Sound. The apprach was that we set up for a "live" recording - i.e. tracking all parts at once - but are really just focusing on getting good drum tracks. On some songs the whole thing is good and has a good feel that you cannot get any other way. On this song however I had a certain sound in my head that I didn't feel was captured in the original so I kept the drums and scrapped everything else. Went down to the local Sam Ash and picked up the Digi001 and tracked the other parts seprately at my home studio. I must say this is a VERY cool way to work. Go to the "big" studio and track drums through a nice Trident console with every mic you could name at your disposal, dump the tracks over to Pro Tools, bring it home and load it up in PT LE and do the rest in the nice, relaxing atmosphere of your own place on your own time. I am LOVING it!!! Peace, Frank Silano |

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Stut5,
Thanks bro, for the complements... For percussion, I've been using samples lately. I've spent a little time organizing sounds I can use. If I can ever help you, let me know... Later, Roy Hey Frank, In one of my first bands, somebody pulled out an old Uriah Heep album, which had some heavy slide guitar on it, so we did a cover from it... it was a great live song. And on recording those drums first, I would have done the same thing. That's how we always used to do it. Bass, drums, and me on guitar, but I was mainly there as a reference initially. The important thing was getting that feel down and recorded well on bass and drums. We'de hone the rest later, unless it was a live thing... Oh, and tell Victor to ease up on that Strat, or it's gonna catch on fire!.... Roy |

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
musicsmith,
Just listened to "Another Night". My kind of music! Nice job! I LOVE the vocalist and the vocal recording. I REALLY like the drummer and the fact that the drums are live. The guitarist really SMOKES at the end. Jorge already touched upon it, but as soon as you mentioned octaves on the guitars, I knew that's what it was. That fat upper bass is slamming your compression on the mix. Probably duplicated bass frequencies around 250-400 from the bass and guitars. The chords sound fat, but they're sharing too much with the bass. If the guitars are thinned out and come at you from a different location than the bass, then the mix would really open up and the instruments would spread out. I think the performance is a great crescendo in itself, and would hold up the intensity even if you back off the low end of those guitars. Otherwise, it still had me rockin in my chair, and that band sounds good! I'll bet that guitarist is a Steve Lukather fan.... |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
MikeD,
Like Jorge442 says, he and I can't get it to play through. At the MP3.com site, obviously the artist has a choice whether or not his song can be downloaded, or just listened to once. And for some reason, unless we can download the song, it will only play a few seconds of it... So, sheesh, I'd really like to hear the Modern Day Hero stuff you did before Christmas, but can't til we figure something out..... Any ideas why we can't get the full song to play, using a typical streamer, like say WindowsMediaPlayer? Thanks, Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Musicsmith -
Gotta say, I'm diggin the tune myself. I also agree that the low and mid range "madness" could be solved by thinning out the guitars and also possibly by taming some of the large room reverbs. That may also help give some of your tracks a little more presence and punch. I really dig the compression on the snare drum. The compression is obvious but very cool, and appropriate for the track. Out of curiosity - Did you use the standards PT compression? If so what were the settings? Keep up the good work! BigRedButton www.jacksonBjackson.com |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
hey Murph and Big red,
Thanks alot for the comments . I am going to remix and try to even out the mix a little. Ihave noticed that alot of my mixes are a lil heavy in that 200 to 500hz range and have been trying to correct that. I am mixing in such a small room with event ps8 powered speakers and maybe the high end is lil exaggerated so I tend to make up for it. Anyway the drums were recorded using a presonus digimax so there might be a little of the built in limiter on the snare top and bottom but other than that I used the stock digi rack and dverb for all plugs and I think the snare sound comes mostly from the bottom which I squashed the hell out of the akg clipon mic I used (awesome mic for snare bottom). Will be posting new stuff soon and if you want to buy that bands previous album you can go here exit 57 It was done when we were signed to an indy label in manhattan and even mastered at masterdisk hope to do that again. Still learning how to use all this stuff and definetely appreciate the comments . Thanks again. peace musicsmith |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
http://haggard.iuma.com this was the first session all recorded and mastered by me... its nothing g.. i dont have the best mics for drums either... so just check it out and and feedback or criticism is greatly appreciated! thanks.
|
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Haggard, I enjoyed the tunes, downloaded all of them! The vocals seem a little buried at times. When the drummer actually hits the snare hard it sounds ok, maybe some (a lot) compression would help out, it needs serious twack!. I think I would maybe take out some 300-320Hz from the kik to make it sound a little cleaner.
Maybe it´s supposed to sound lo-fi and I´m just clueless? Superfly was cool not bad for your first project. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

after taking some time away. I have recently added a some new music. Very simple, still working on creating movements with my chord progression. Hi,
I do write some songs once in a while, however, they are not in English, do you guys still want to listen to them? If yes, I'll try to post them somewhere on my website. I always have complain about my mixes sounding bass heavy, so it'll be good if I can get some feedback and suggestions from you guys. I'll try to compile some songs tomorrow night, if you guys want to listen, ok? Thanks and Regards, [Charles] www.two-rooms.com |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
DarkShade,
Brilliant, my friend... you have truly grown in terms of your 'soundscape' production. And your poetic timing is nearly perfect(to me). 'Grief' has got to be the best mesh of poetry and music I have heard (and I just listened to some other similar material last night). It intelligently deals with the subject without being depressing, in my humble opinion... The 'soundscape' is almost perfect for the subject, I think. Because while the core of it remains stark and real(like grief), there is that flicker of life(hope) almost always present, too. I think poetry and music together should form a kind of mental 'painting', and that's what 'Grief' does. So to me, you've achieved a small work of art here... Your stuff is very unique, and done well. And from a creative viewpoint, it's definitely a winner, in my humble opinion. Thanks, Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Thanks family,
A new module helped. Still learning MIDI and what it can (& can't) do. My goal - to be able to create songs, as so many of you here do well. Speaking of which : Shout outs- MikeD - good job engineering!! - Sounds amazing, like a FM broadcast. BaSsTaRd - YO the vocals....I'm digging the vocals.. How???? So much music and so little time (at work). Hoping to listen to everyone before the weekend. Keep doing what ya'll doing, and thanks for all the advice. Without the DUC I would be a very fustrated DIGI user. ____________Darkshade______________________ "A traveler I am, and a navigator. Everyday I discover new regions within my soul." Khalil Gibran |

Darkshade,
I listened to the first track on the list by mistake (my reading comprehension sucks), but it sure made Grief sound like a huge step forward. The track pulled me in incredibly, I had to stop what I was doing and took a smoke break great work, thanks for sharing jorge |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey... I'm keen to submit some of my stuff. I'm in a punk rock/emo band and that stuff can be really hard to mix well (guitar distorions! :eek . I am only just learning pro tools as I'm constantly on the road, I only get about 4 days home at a time. We tour the Australian east coast mainly and play to about 2000 teenagers a night. Some call it lame but I'm having the time of my life. Planning a US tour soon! Anyone else rec'ing their own band?

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Thanks for the feedback Darryl and Darkshade.
Darryl, as far as miking the drum kit for Modern Day Hero, it was pretty simple really, two C1000's for OH's, an Audio Technica 3035 for the hat, a Shure Beta 57 on the snare, a Shure PE66L on each tom, and double miked the kick drum with an AKG D112 inside the kick for the punch and a Shure Beta 52 halfway through the outside kick resonant head for the lowend. The drum kit was recorded in a 12' X 12' in my basement that is treated to be totally dead. All the reverb and room sound is D-Verb, that plug in many love to hate, but I like it for drums! The kick tracks are gated with the Digi rack gate (using the external key - the key being one of the two kick tracks bumped forward 15ms and vice versa for the other kick track). I manually remove all drums and cymbals from the tom tracks, sounds better to me that way. I don't gate the snare at all. EQ all drums to taste and compress the overheads. And that's about it really. Sorry to those who couldn't listen, I really don't have any control over the band's MP3 site. All I can say is thanks for trying to listen I'm going to go listen to everybody elses stuff right now. It's amazing the number of talented engineers in our little DUC! Mike |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
hey Emo King,
I recorded my own band ¨Brutal Mastication¨, hhmmm death metal/hardcore stoner mosh music?? some people call it deathcore or something. We´re more ¨hardcore¨ as in punkish than most metal bands. We´re also more metal than most hardcore bands....I just received the sessions today!! Album soon to be released possibly(hopefully) through Arctic Music. In the meantime I´ve been working with Primate, my chilean band´s recording (previous to me). They´re more rock/metal/sometimes industrial almost? definitely miss playing out and look forward to a european tour soon! (can´t get back to the US just yet!) I recorded quite a few EMO bands at my night job Studio 13 in Fla. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey Jorge442. Some emo bands? wow! It's a nuts project cos it's a crazy genre. Seems fairly simple (guitar, bass, drums, vocals) but in order to keep a 'raw' and energetic emo sound you have to cut back on some of the glitzy fx and whatnot... Makes for a more intimate and less-manufactured sound. But emo is often portrayed as "poorly recorded crying".... at least i know the truth!

Emo King and Jorge, I was reading your conversation about emo and hardcore bands and thought you might like these:
Nodes of Ranvier - Cold Fingers Nodes of Ranvier - Horizon Nodes of Ranvier - Soundtrack For Salvation I recorded this band about 4 months ago and I hear they are getting signed to Recourse Records. They deem themselves "Procore" which is progressive hardcore. I think they are very talented. Give it a listen, I think you will enjoy their music. |
