i'm helping out a friend. i autotuned the background vocals to DEATH, so please don't expect greatness there, but the rapping is quite good (i think). could you guys help me out with some mixing tips here? its close, but not quite there. vocals were all recorded with my akg c3000b straight into 001.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

hey da BaSsTaRd, nice tune. The doubled up vocal part seemed a little loud and the doubling a little too evident to me. Musicīs cool though, just that it should be a touch louder in comparisson to the vocals.

Mr. Seven: at 2:41 thereīs a click in there (right side), could just be the MP3?

Mr. Seven,

Hooked is a well done arrangement, and a pro production all the way around. I do not think I would change anything, your attention to detail is evident in the production. Nice job!

Cinemafixer,

That is a real B3 on your tracks, right? Just curious...

What kind of leslie are you using?

Audiohead 01-15-2002 02:38 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Cinemafixer - I tried out your Hammond settings and what can I say? 888655068 was exactly the sound I've been looking for - I can't stop playing it

I really like the Leslie miked like you said - I used a pair of Neumann KM184s on the top corners, and a 414 on the bottom, and it worked out very well. My 421 is on loan to someone, so I'll try it when it comes back. I think you're right about the raw edge of a dynamic on the bottom rotor, so we shell see....

Also, as G Roots asked, what Leslie are you using? i have a 122R with the reverb taken out (apparently they didn't sound too good...)

Thanks again - it's nice to have a mini-Hammond discussion within the DUC

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Audiohead,

Are you using a real B3 also? I have a Roland VK7 which sounds okay but as one would expect, it does not sound like the real deal!

Cinemafixer 01-15-2002 05:22 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

I have a 122 w/ Goff/Atlas top driver (replace that Jensen!!). My B3 that I use in the studio (I have5) is a '74 heavily modded by Goff.

OK, Here;s my first venture into Pro Tools. It's a song I recorded and produced for my band. The drum tracks were recorded at another studio and the rest were recorded and mixed by me at my home studio on my Digi001/PTLE setup.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

G Roots - I have a C3, which is the same as a B3, but with a church-style cabinet (very few B3's ever made it to these parts).

My C3 and Leslie 122R just arrived 2 weeks ago, so I'm like a kid in a toy shop A real Hammond and Leslie are simply in a class of their own.

I haven't tried the VK7, but I have a Hammond XB2 with a Korg G4 stompbox Leslie simulator, which is what I gig with. And as of the last 2 weeks I'm having serious problems enjoying it at gigs anymore...

Cinemafixer - any thoughts? You might know the VK7, but as an owner of 5 B3's, I think I already know the answer...

I'd really like to know about the mods to the studio B3, becaue it sounds stunning!!

Sorry I havent' been able to listen to more of your music, but I'm on a 33.6 dialup (yes, really - this is rural Ireland) and mp3's take aeons to download. I'll try though.....

Nice mix Roy!! it even makes a nice instrumental! Thanks for sharing, I like that clarity and sense of space in the mix.

No problem da BaSsTaRd! I figured you didnīt need for me to tell you you da man (you already know that ) I just offered my honest opinion. When Iīm working on a mix I send it to my friends over the aol instant messenger as MP3īs for that same purpose, so they can tell me if they hear anything wierd that I mightīve missed or whatever. I visited your site, and you got some cool stuff...I enjoyed the jungle song and how it rocks out

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

The VK7 blows the xb2 OUT OF THE WATER. The vibrato/chorus is actually usable without all those nasty artifacts with a leslie and it doesn't sounds anywhere near as brittle. The B-3 I record with like I said is a '74 - I had the generator recapped and calibrated to my own specs - I play a lot of pedals and needed the organ to produce a lot of bass. The preamp was also modified to keep the bass from getting out of hand - all the cathode circuits and plate caps were changed to my specs. I had them isntall an active percussion boost and a reverb unit - not for the studio, of course, but good for playing out.

Sheesh, Matt, you've got 5 B3's, Bro? And I'm worried about extra guitars on stage. Ha! Thank goodness your playing justifies it...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Great Job on the mix in that last song cinamafixer. Top notch. Love that B3! And Roy, man you bring back some memories with that slide work. What guitar and amp were you using on that one Roy? And was that a long distance session or did you did you hook up at Matt's studio?
I havn't had much time at all since setting up a project studio at my place to do any work on some of my own songs(isn't that the way it works sometimes)....just too busy. But when I do, I look forward to your comments and advice. Great group of people on this post. Hope it continues.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

GP,

Matt(cinemafixer) and I are doing some long distance stuff together. I'm in Memphis and he's in Hartford, Ct. I've also had the opportunity to do the same with DaBasstard/Brian(NY), Quikdraw/Mike(Ontario, Ca.), and Last/Peter(S. Africa) and I are collaborating professionally. As I've said before, this forum is a good thing...

For Matt's song, I miked a small Fender jam amp w/ just a Rode NT1. The solo is slightly later than how I played it, but Matt's gonna nudge it back in the final mix, so it's dead on.(Right, Matt? )

Thanks, Roy

Hi Jeff, I enjoyed the tune. I specially liked the guitar parts (nice and heavy) and the SFX were cool too. Iīd personally try to get that snare to cut through better, maybe a boost somewhere around 1K.
I think you did achieve the overall feel and thatīs really cool.
Iīm a drummer so maybe thatīs why I need to hear loud assed drums.....are you the guitarrist by any chance?

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Man, some good stuff has been posted lately, and I just got a chance to listen. Just a few humble thoughts here....

Fsilano/Frank... I tell you, 'Free' is really a good song. Those excellent guitars sound like Hendrix had he become a Christian...(lol) The vocal is nice, too. So, the drums were recorded separately? To what, just basic tracks which you redid at your studio?
Anyway, very well done, in my humble opinion.

IOP/Mike...As I've said before, in your musical arena, your stuff is superb. The vocals complement your style, too.'Rippin at the Seams' is simply killer.

BRB/Jackson...Nice vocal on 'Middle Management', Good song...

Threnody/Jeff...Man, I like your stuff. interesting style...sets a definite mood for the imagination... pretty cool I think.
I listened to 'Lies' and 'As the Night Falls'.

Dave G.- The Dirty Triplets/'Happy' reminds me of Cheryl Crow(as a matter of fact the song 'If It makes you Happy'). So I guess that's good...

original man...just wondering here, but had you posted 'Bang the War Drums' before? I think I remember it, or is this a newer version? (I think it's very good).

All of it is good stuff, and I appreciate you letting me (and us) listen...

Roy

man, I have the hardest time listening to stuff from the MP3.com website. My WMP gives me kernell errors or tells me Iīm not connected to the network.....I might just be misconfigured...........sorry, just venting.

Roy Howell 01-21-2002 02:50 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Jorge442,
I have the same problem, but if you actually download it onto your drive somewhere, it should play, and then you can just delete it if you want.
What mine has been doing is starting the song in WindowsMediaPlayer, but then giving me a prompt like 'cannot play file' or something like that. So, if it gives you the choice (some don't), download it.

Roy

Hi Roy,
Yes, whenever thereīs a chice to DL the file I do so and it works. I supppose itīs an incompatibility between WMP and access to the internet through a LAN?
