Sounds great, Murph...excellent job on the mix. Drums are really nice too. Last thing I heard you do, you had midied the drums so well they sounded real. Are these Midi or real? (Steve maybe?)
Great job... and my cable transfer rate was around 44kb/s, just FYI... thanks, Roy

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks guys!
Roy, yes the drums are real this time. Although I know it's ass backwards, Steve recorded the drums AFTER the vocals and guitars were done.
It was going to be a guitar/vox songwriting demo, but we decided to add drums and bass and start making a "record" out of it.
With all of that in mind, and with the tracks done at three different locations on three different systems, it all imported and lined up pretty well.

Thanks for the feedback on the transfer rate...that seems a little slow to me. I've downloaded stuff from you guys (DaBaSsTaRd, etc..) and gotten rates of 80-90-120 kb/s before.
I'll report these numbers to my web host company.

Thanks all. Great weekend!!
Regards,
Bill

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Ok, not many comments here but a lot of mixes. I will hit the last few then post one of mine. BTW I am assuming these were all made using an 001 or 002. It might be good to list this info after you post. So here goes....

Punx: I listened to the Vanogan song. Funny song, Cartman would enjoy it. Are these real drums? Doesn't sound like it, but they are out of time. Maybe played manually off a drum machine? Good bridge, but I am going to focus on the mix since that is what this thread is about. The overall level is low, the bass is hard to hear, good vocal placement against the guitar. Good tones for the genre, but mix needs some beefing.

Jamlaw: "I Am mp3" I have heard your stuff before on another post, it is always very good. This sounds mastered with analog equipment, si or no. I love the big drums, but the OH seem a touch high and it is taking away from the size of the guitars. I struggle with this all the time, but that is my perception here. The vocals sound good, but I think sonically could place a bit better, more solid. Great job though, sounds very good.

Audioeric: "Daddys Little Girl". So the song is pretty good, but this mix needs some work. The guitar is very harsh and too loud. Nice Harmony solo. There is no low end to pull this thing together, especially in the bass guitar. The drums are very small, the snare needs to be louder and more defined, same with the kick. Vocals need to be pinpointed more, touched the surface on vocal production could expand more, but a good start. She has a very good interesting voice.

I will try to hit some more later. So now that I have offered up my opinion on a few, I now grant you permission to rip me to shreds.

The song is called Oxygen. Tracked 001, mixed 002.

dude oxygen sounds great, especially the vocals are huge! I really like the vocal production on the choruses.

I know what you are saying about the overheads, its such a fine line between buried and too loud!

Hey byteme.. thanks for listening.. i didn't track any of this, and the guy that did is very much stuck in the 80's, so it was trying to undo some of his stuff.. And the bass, yeah, i agree.. after listening to it at home, it is lacking some.. I'm still trying to find that sweet spot in the control room..

thanks for listening though, and thanks for the advice.. oxygen was a great song, most definitely!!! any tips on how you got the vocals to sound like that?? guitar tone was great as well.. warm and rich during the "cleaner" parts, and big warm and dirty during the rest.. just all around a great piece.. sounds like something you'd hear on the radio or something.. good luck with it.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Sorry I haven't responded in awhile, I need to be better about that. I'll check some stuff out later tonight.

Anyway, I have a couple new ones.

"Touched" and "This Time" are new.

the guitar solo sounds for both songs suck and will be replaced this weekend or next. I need to do new vocals on "this time" (can you spot the cranked compression?) and a new solo, a little editing, but this is mix is pretty close to what I was looking for.

I'd like any advice, feedback.

Murph,

great job adding all that stuff together, it really gels. (spelling? jells, ghjellz? who knows?)

What were you using for the vocals, the singer sounds great.

BRB, I listened to the "dance pop" selection, it sounded great. What did you use for drums?

thanks.

The simple carnival song has a great kind of 60s sound to the vocals.

Nice work all.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

bp,
Thanks. it's a Shure KSM32 through the DBX 576 Preamp/Comp. Jodi has a great voice and very professional mic technique. With her voice I am able to boost mids on that 576 without clipping. Some voices you just get away with it better than others.
The thing I did with this vocal track (after I recorded it) was bus ALL of the vocals (lead and back-up) out of an AUX track with a Waves RComp, mild, on Vocal preset, and into my Mackie CFX20 board and then back into another AUX track. This warmed up the vocals and gave it a more analog sound. Plus, the vocal reverb on that track is from the Mackie's internal DSP....believe it or not. It really was the right verb for the track and it spared me some CPU resourses.

Easy there BassTard!

I thought that it was a cool video too. Tried to post something on it last week, but I think that it did not go thru. I think that the singer has a very Al Jorgensen look to him. Minus the mic stand loaded with skulls look, but still very cool. I like the film transition from the live to the outside up against the wall thing too. Very cool effect. The song is cool too..

Good deal... Let the bass player look around though! Like miagi "eyes always look eyes!"

Thanks for all the comments on the vid. Re: needing more bass player that seems to be a popular comment! Don't blame us though, the director did all the editing and stuff totally on his own. He wrote the treatment and conceptualized all the stuff. But he is a badass for sure - if any of you all are on the West Coast looking for someone that does videos his name is Mike Sloat and he is represented by Arsenal, Inc. Alright, here's a few little bits that I've thrown together over the past month. Not really concentrating on composition as much as production, it's tough when you have to convert to mp3 though. Anyway, let me know what you think. Cheers!

I think production ideas are fine,Drums and the acoustic gtr's sound fine (snare almost knock's my head off , but that's kind of a good thing, your call)
low's on bass seemed really hot, kinda boomy ,but feel's like you were tryin' to, so it's again, your call.
Distorted electric guitar sound, feels like a stock Ibanez RG into a pod or other modeling apperatus. they have mid's,but not much sparkle.Maybe it's a preferance thing too,but i really enjoy classic pick-up's and a good tube amp. A good sound can be done w/o these, but......
I'm bieng so pissy, 'cause I think it's great, and well, I'm
just pissy sometimes

Hey thanks for your reply there Arch. Ya, I was going big on the snare and the Bass...but maybe a little too much on your monitors, dunno. Ibanez? bite your tongue, can't stand them. It's a strat, but doesn't make much difference once you put it through a modeler, which was what I used by the way, Amplitube. When you record direct and then lay over the modeler, you tend to lose a lot of brightness. And would you believe that everything other than the 6-strings is all midi? Thanks again, Cheers!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Thanks for the compliments, archtop, you’re too kind.

Actually I had more problems with mp3 conversion than usual with this mix. I had to convert with 192 b/s to make it marginally acceptable. I usually find that 128 is enough. Might have something to do with it being pushed quite hard level-wise.

Kris, I hear ya. I have the same question sometimes. I can speak for myself that it is all PT LE 001, 002. I feel the same, it makes me feel good when I hear people putting out great sounding stuff on these systems. I am going to get some comments out tonight, then post a song from an album I just mixed for my cousin. This one will be interesting because EVERYTHING (and I do mean everything) was tracked with 1 NT2, the Mbox, and a Powerbook. I mixed it on my 002.

Also, guys, you should listen to Doc, Danielles stuff, I especially like the live rehersal thing, and the track below. Is that done with a 001, Danii?
