The Mighty Burner,
Both 'Rap Tune' and 'Space Funk cue' are great, man... really clean production, killer groove...
it would be interesting to see the film too. If there's any chance, post a clip sometime...
thanks, Roy

jerfo,
Very nice playing, man... I'm very impressed, and can't wait to hear the full production (or whatever you want to post). Good stuff...
thanks, Roy

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Roy, Your original Goblin's Moon was one of the first songs I listened to on this thread. I loved it, especially that whap whap whap thang coming in on alternating sides. I was listening to it again a couple months ago, and my two young girls walked in. They just about went nuts dancing around.
The only other tune I've been able to hear lately is Steevp's "Old Ladies in Mercedes". Great song; I really like that little change-up in the middle. (I'm a big fan of little change-ups in the middle). I'll try and listen to all the other recent ones as well. Too much talent, too fast...

Thanks Nippamuk...yep, I love 'Old Ladies in Mercedes' too...especially the 'witch doctor' guitar licks... It's like an alarm going off that something wild's about to happen...

I've still gotta go back and catch up on many I've missed lately, and I will.

That's really nice Jason.. it sounds effortless, which I mean as a compliment!

I'm listening at 2:20am and it fits the time of day perfectly, well done, and don't forget to tell us when it's finished..

badperson,
Great song, man... you remind me a little of Van Morrison(who I really admire), with your vocal style. Very nice mix, with everything clear and present...good stuff... thanks, Roy

Park Seward,
How interesting...cool Strawberry Alarm Clock cover, and very well recorded. I didn't realize til the end that this was done live (right?...judging by the audience). I always liked those chords on 'Who cares what games we choose...' ...the bgv's are done really well, especially the sha-la-la's at the end. And what kind of keyboard was used?
thanks, Roy

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Thanks Roy,

The keyboard was a direct injection Hammond XK2 that sounds like a B3. I did some heavy top end EQ to better match the sound of the record. They probably used a Farsia or something like that. The live recording had some wrong organ chords in the beginning "BAs" so I used the NI B4 MIDI software plug-in to play those chords.

The basic recording was done live (drums, bass, electric guitars, organ). The singers were done later, one guy in Florida and one in Colorado. They recorded on some software package and just sent me their WAVE files. Acoustic guitars and percussion were added later too. I did have to nudge some part so they would fit better.

The two singers didn't sing with each other. They each did their parts separately and didn't hear each other's tracks until I mixed them together. They just sang to the basic track.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi Everyone. We'd like to introduce the "International Badass Band" or IBB for short. The IBB is made up of four musicians from four very different parts of the world.

This is our first and only collaboration, but it is an exciting one. The song made its way around the world several times, with everyone providing creative input, not to mention some badass playing. We hope you like it. The name of the song is "Call In My Disgrace", Music by Soundsurfr, Lyrics by Soundsurfr and Paul Curtiz.

Here's who did what:

Paul Curtiz (Brussels, Belguim): Lead and Backing Vocals, Rhythm Guitar
Roy Howell (Memphis, Tennessee): Slide Guitar, Lead and Rhythm Guitar
Soundsurfr (Long Island, New York): Keyboards, Rhythm Guitar, Drum Programming
Mike Versaci (Atlanta,Georgia): Bass Guitar

The cool thing is this - with the exception of me (Soundsurfr) and Mike who have been friends since high school, none of us have ever met face to face. Hopefully we will someday - all in one place. Wouldn't that be a cool thing?

So here's the link:

http://www.soundsurfr.com/CIMD.mp3

Enjoy!

The International Badass Band

PS - I would like to personally thank Roy, Paul and Mike for the gift of their talent and time (no small things). I love the way the song came out - you are all true professionals! - Greg (Soundsurfr)

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Okay I've got another one.

this is a testament against laziness. In the chorus I began to notice early on a slight loss of the groove. I kept thinking the next overdub would fix it and it never did, so I'll have the retrack the entire chorus to take care of it.

I also need to change the sound of the guitar solo which is entirely wrong for this song. I just don't like going direct for my stuff, it has a home studio slick "car commercial" sound to my ear. Any tips?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Thanks everyone for the nice comments. A lot of people in this forum and elsewhere have been asking about how the drum track was done, so here it is in detail:

The basic drum patterns (there are three - one in the verse, one in the pre-chorus and one in the chorus) are all Acid loops - I think they're from the Drum Tools library. The verse beat was actually surgically constructed out of two similar loops so that it would fit rhythmically with the main guitar riff. All of that work was done in Pro-Tools. The only thing I use Acid for is to set the tempo of the loops. The guitar tracks, solos, vocals and keyboard tracks were laid down over the bare loops, along with a scratch bass track. Once the song was completed structurally, I started work on the drum fills. The bass part was written and recorded last so that it would fit rhythmically with the drum accents.

Crash cymbal splashes were added throughout the track wherever I thought a drummer might feel them. Sometimes I actually close my eyes and play "air drums" to the track and wherever I find myself hitting a crash cymbal, I insert a crash into the track. It works great, but it's embarrassing when my wife walks in.

I used two different crash cymbals on two different tracks and panned them about 45 degrees left and right so that when the two were hit consecutively they'd occupy different spaces and ring over each other.

There are a lot of fills. Some of the fills were imported from a library, others were made by chopping the original loops into individual kick and snare hits and replacing them into the track. Still others were done in Pro-Tools using individual samples of three pretty nice maple toms. Each of the three toms occupies its own track - the high is panned 45 degrees right, the medium is in the middle and the low tom is panned 45 left, approximating the placement of a real set. It was hard to get the levels and 'verb settings on the toms to match the looped sounds, so just had to get it as close as I could. I used a true-verb and some compression on the tom tracks.

It's time consuming. It took at least five or six hours total editing time over about three days to do all of that, but the more time you put in, the more it pays off.

soundsrfr -

Love the tune man...great sounds, and I really dig the tune itself...sweet bridge. I'd work with ya anytime, my friend.

Clorox - great stuff too. I dig the style you guys are developing, and the vocalist is super cool and unique. Best of luck, and let me know when your next NYC gig is...I'll come check ya out. Too bad I never caught that ad you put out for a guitar player!

Every time I visit this thread I'm reminded of just how much talent is out there...really amazing, intimidating, and inspiring.

keep rockin,

clorox- things fall apart - great song. The only thing I would change is lower the guitar in the verses, its a little overpowering.

IntelDoc,
I finally got to listen to 'trainwreck'... really nice sound and spread on those acoustic guitars. You had mentioned getting a Taylor yourself...man, they make great guitars, don't they. The built in condensor mike/pickup makes them sound incredible live, so I bet they record just beautifully.
Anyway, good job on the song... I appreciate the listen...

Kris Whitten...
Sorry to be late on listening, but I heard 'ZiggyWiggy' earlier today.... it's a strangely refreshing piece. Interesting intro...cool way to lead into the main body of the song. Great clarity overall. Good piece...

Roy,
Thanks for the comment. I am having fun with this client. He mainly plays open mic nights and is a Med School student at Georgetown. Had some spare time between semesters and wanted to throw together a quick demo. I told him that I would hook him up and we are now working on 6 songs. I actually played with "Train Wreck" some tonight in ACID and put a drum track to it. Kinda cool, but pretty basic. Got inspired to mess with loops today after work. (Thanks SoundSurfr) Kinda nice to hear a driving drum beat to it though. Here is the link in case ya want to hear it with the drums. All loops in Acid. I wanted to bring it into ProTools, but the original session was 48/24 and the loops are all 44. Seemed to sound better in Acid, so I stuck with it there... Added some plugs on the master fader and a trueverb aux. Wha La!

Here is the new link:

Hehe... those are some low-ass tuned guitars, I'm tellin you...gotta be Db, at least. I'de love to check those things out.
Hey...sounds great, man. Post the next mix when you're ready...
thanks, Roy

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Roy,

Thanks. The intro and structure is kinda part of the music type. It allows the dj to slowly mix into and out of the record, hence the gradual build ups and breaks.

I guess they call it minimal house music.

Probably more than you cared to know

You know why this thread is great?

I take a pause during the tune I'm working on I pop in here to see what's going on, take a listen, and then realise I'm completely up the wrong tree sonically, must try harder, am not the dude I think I am and really need to spend 4 days on the drums not 10 minutes..

You are all an inspiration (That won't stop me posting my junk tho!)
