optymusblu,
Good song...was this recorded semi-live? It sounds like most of it was, though not the vocals... I notice the guitars tuned down to D...what kind of guitar(s) do you use?
Thanks for the listen...~Roy

I recorded everything myself,so I did it one instrument at a time.I play through a esp guitar with kirk hammit style emg's,Running through a marshall jcm 2000, recorded through an sm57.The vocals is what I feel im having the most trouble getting to mix right.Any suggestions would help tremendously.

Hey Roy, finally got a chance to listen to Route666. I dig it. Definitely got a bit of a Vai "Flexible" era type sound to it, especially the keys in the chorus part.

The clarity is really cool.

Nice job!

optymusblu,

I liked your song, and I agree with the feedback above. Did you play the drums yourself? It has a very live sound. What kind of mic did you use for the vox?

Roy, Route 666 (which is about to be renamed, there was an interesting article in the ny times last week, btw) is a great sounding song. I'm guessing that was done almost entirely direct, no? Also, is the bass a keyboard?

I'd be curious as to how you got those drum beats, did you use reason?

thanks, great stuff, all.

I use a Groove tube gt55 for the vocals. Thanks for all your advice,I took the dverb off the vocals, added short delay 2, and brought the volume down some and re did the eq.Ive got it sounding way better now,I also cut the guitars to the sharp left and right. It really livened things up a lot,I will try to post it on here.Speaking of posting music on here,How can I get it posted without having to use my garageband.com credits? Is there someway I can set something up where I can post my songs besides Garageband.com?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">it sounded pretty good for a newbie. i listened last night (along with a bunch of other music) and as i recall there were a few things i noticed. i think the vocals are way too loud. i dont remember specifically hearing what fx you used on the vocs. compression and reverb help to help sit vocals down into the mix, but dont overdo it, and sometimes you just need to lower the volume. i am not saying to bury the vocals, just that they are really on top of everything else right now. i think you could the backing music was a little muddy, but i think the overall mix of the music was pretty good. as i recall, the vocals were a bit brighter than the music tracks, which also would cause them to sound on top. i will try to listen again today, sometimes those 12 AM listening sessions get scrambled in the brain.

All,
This is my first paying job. Recorded it Saturday night. Used the Oktava 319's for the guitars, and the RODE NTK on the VOX. I am really digging the guitar sounds. It is not fully complete. There will be some solo work done in the background. Arpeggiated stuff I think. Not sure yet what the musician has in mind. Fired up on the guitars though. Thanks Chris Cavell for the recommendation on those Oktava's!

Enjoy....

Hey Roy - Ahhhh where is my convertible and that long straight road.

IntelDoc - very nice tune. He really has a nice voice. The guitar sounds really good. I enjoyed this song, thank you.

dB - Thanks for your site. It is really cool what you do with loops, I am going to have to start reading your tips on those ! Also thanks for hosting other's music...so far you site is not being blocked by our firewall !

Take Care,
Gene

Jlee - intentional - nice song, reminds me of Tool. Your vocals are a bit too buried in my opinion. You have a nice voice it should be heard more.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

micah - Thanks for the feedback. I must be one of those singers who is insecure about the sound of my voice (I am a perfectionist), b/c the feedback I always get is to turn up the vocals.

I get the Tool comparison a lot, which I think is due to the dark sound and similar voice. I don't mind the comparison because they are amazing, but I definitely want to have my own expression. I try to experiment and explore as many different processes and techniques as I can, because each song is a new challenge to relay my state of mind in a new way. Sometimes that can be a ton of work

Thanks,
Jeremy

IntelDoc - those acoustic guitars sound great. What kind of guitar is it? Did you use a mic pre for the Oktavas or did you go straight into the Digi?

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

:-)
Here is the next installment from the same guy. Recorded last night. Not final, but close. Still waiting for the solo stuff and possibly drums. I do not like this one as much as the other, but it is nice.

http://members.cox.net/andrewsintel/FoundAndLost.mp3

BTW: As for the first song, I took it off my site. Sorry I am limited to space there until I can put it elsewhere. The new one above is there.

What I did for "Train Wreck"

On a recommendation by Chris Cavell, I bought 2 Oktava 319's and LOVE THEM! Set one about 18 inches back from the neck angled in towards the sound hole. Ran the other in ront, but behind the hole. Also ran direct in to the Art DI/O Tube direct box. Recorded at 48K 24bit. Ran the mics into my Digimax Presonus LT and set the levels accordingly. Actually did not clip at all! Kinda nice. Added some TrueVerb, to a AUX track for the guitars. Bussed them all to that guy. For the vocals I used the RODE NTK and ran it into the Presonus as well. Added a little verb and the DeEsser to that as well. For the Master Fader, with some aid from some others (Bastiaan, Calvin) I added the REQ6, C4 and then the L2 and did some fine tweeking for now. That is what I did pretty much for both of these tracks. Had the artist put new strings on the night before which really makes a HUGE impact on the sound.

Oh ya, He is playing on a Signature Series Seagull. Very nice guitar compared to the seagull that I have. (That will change when I pick up my Taylor at the end of the month)
He plays lefty and upside down. Never seen that before. Strings it for right handed but flips it. Kinda strange!

badperson 06-17-2003 09:32 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

you mean the oktava mk319, for $199 each?

Also, that was two different guitar parts overdubbed, right?

bp

IntelDoc 06-17-2003 09:51 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Yes the Oktava 319's, but I landed the pair for 82 bucks a piece at Guitar Center! :-) They say they "retail" for $599.00 but they sound great.

I had him record the first track, then duplicated the three tracks and re-recorded over it. Made him vary it ever so slightly, then panned that hard to the right. That gave it some nice depth.

O.K. friends
One of My Fathers Day gifts was ,wife and I in the studio for a couple hour's.
The disclaimer start's like this:
I wanted a guitar part to play the drums to,
got the drums,
Time for bass, ...... tired of guitar song already.......that's o.k. .....mute.....
big dirty guitar feel goin' on ,.......till I laid down the piano.then I thought I found the vibe I was goin' for, only it 's sort of repetative and it all fall apart in at least two different areas,........but I still kinda dig it.
What about this?... Roy?... Burner?..... I send you the PT session cut and paste the ***** out of it to fix the train wreck's and a sweet Howell lead

A soothing yet satisfiying Burner rap
What ever, just a thought .
Might need to just start over ..... it's...just....
I ......kinda ....like the sonic's/fidelity of it here goes. Father's Day

Hey archtop...
I like it. If you'll just add a countoff, I'll be glad to throw down something on it.( a simple 4-count Hi hat at the beginning will do, it makes it easy to sync the sessions up when I send my track back to you). Then just bounce an MP3 w/ countoff, put it on your site, and I'll convert it here...all that stuff.
I do like it...nice and raw...it's a little hard to make out a couple of the piano chords in this mix, but no big deal. Let me know...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

So Roy
We'de do this as an mp3 stereo back and forth (mix one side , new the other) (done that once).
or a PT sesion(would be cooler, but bigger,my site let's me have 10 meg.)
but could be fixed.(It need's fixed)
Doesn't sound like it(especially bar's 2 or 3) but I played to a click,so i used countoff buton.
are you version 6?
I'll go check the BPM
Thank YOU for listening.

"cause I know .. summer .... wife ... kid's

can you say BUSY

archtop 06-17-2003 11:24 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

I checked the BPM and it is 68.
the size of the pt folder w/song is 1.28 gig
If we mp3 it ,
I should edit out the ccrraappp and trim the time down.
do you thing if i trim it down in time and plugs,
could I get it under 1 gig

Roy Howell 06-17-2003 11:38 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi archtop,
I do this all the time... just an MP3 mix w/ countoff is all I need. I could play to the one I just downloaded easily(by converting it to WAV and importing it into a new PT session). But, it needs a countoff to help you sync to when I send my track back. Once I've imported your mix(w/ countoff) into a PT session, I simply copy and paste that countoff to MY track too. So when you get mine, you just sync up your and my countoffs, and my track will be in the pocket.

I'm sure you knew that... But, let's do it that way if it's cool with you. This is how I do it with most of the guys I play/write with here.
thanks, Roy

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The arrangement is just up to you. You can always edit my track too if you decide to shorten the song later. But, don't worry about a perfect mix for this reference MP3 I'll play to... I would just be jamming a little anyway.
