Straatocoaster,
Great acoustic sound! Please share what you are using, chain, etc... Did you by chance use the ol' cardboard under the chair thingy? Curious. I loved the song and thought the levels were pretty good overall. Nice job. ~ J |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Thanks Charlie and Joel! These are just preliminary tracks, so I wasn't overly worried about getting all the levels "just right" yet. These guys are folk jammers, so I am not planning on using much (if any) compression ... and there is a lot of room to put their three-part harmonies on top of the music.
The signal chain is pretty modest, actually. The project is supposed to be kept as uncomplicated as possible. They are doing this to make a demo -- not a releaseable pressentation -- so this is what I ran for this session: Acoustic guitars: one SM81 about 18" off of the fretboard at the 14th fret and angled toward the soundhole, ran into a Great River MP-2NV. Mandolin: one AKG C414-XLS about 12" away and 6" above the instrument, angled down and pointing at where the neck and body meet: ran into an API 3124+ That's it! I took some time finding a decent placement for the mics and let them have some fun playing. I'll post all of the other cuts if you guys are interested in hearing them, but they are just more of the same -- no vocals yet. They are booked to do the vox in early June. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey Stan, yeah if you have any more cuts I would dig giving them a listen. yeah, the placement on the acoustics turned out really well for this deal. Sometimes I have tried micing an acoustic where the guitarist puts their ear when they play like that also. Usually musicians move around til they hear their instruments sound the best I discovered. hehe
|
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
This is truly not what I would typically do to track acoustics: I normally use two SDC -- one on the neck, tilted toward the soundhole, and the other over the guitarist's strumming shoulder somewhere that phase issues aren't apparent (usually just over his head). I will use a LDC on the soundhole to beef up a thin sounding guitar if necessary. These guys had nice instruments to begin with: some kind of a mahogany guitar (did he call it a Larrime?) and a rosewood Martin. That helps too.
Like I said, these guys (and lady) are really taking a no-nonsense approach toward the project to keep things as un-cluttered and un-produced as possible while still getting a good representation of what they do. It is fun, because they are worrying more about the vibe than the technical issues that are usually the foremost concerns of most other projects. It is almost like a concept or a credo of theirs for this demo. I'll bounce down the other three tunes they did and post them within the next hour. As a warning: two of the songs have bass lines are planned for re-performance, but you'll get the idea of where they are going with the music. |

Straatocastoer/Stan, Great job on this so far...very nice spread on everything...I like this version of 'summertime' too...guitar player(left) gets a little 'busy' a few times, but maybe it'll work well with the vocals. Post back your progress when they come back in, and thanks for the listen. -Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Just a quick little one that I am slowly developing on my own. Lots of ambient stuff, but kinda cool. Doing this one for the wife...
It will be longer. This was all done with ACID 5.0. Looping gets kinda cool after awhile... SFC - TBR STUDIO - Doc |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
yeah it's all Reason, it was pre-mbox stuff from a month or 2 ago. The new songs now get written with protools and live instruments and vocals in mind.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Nice job programming it all, Sean...some interesting stuff going...it definitely will be good to hear other things along with what you midi. Post back more stuff anytime.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hi all.
We you be so gentle and tell me what you think of these two songs on http://membres.lycos.fr/cedrik0s/songs.html regarding the mix, and regarding the music itself? Done at home alone with my computer. Thanks |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
hey Sean, nice job man! For feedback, I dig the panning tricks in Fade, but it sounds a little like it needs another instrument or something to fill it out just a little. For Genre, I really dig the entire track man. I like how it transitions through out the song a lot in this one.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey everyone, just a little problem with my NIC on my production computer. I haven't been able to connect since yesterday evening, but I do have the files ready to go. I am running out to grab a replacement, and should have the other 3 tunes up today.
@#$& computers ... can't live with 'em, can't drop a 16 ton weight on them |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey Doc, nice programming work man. you adding vocals to it later also? you also doing it for your wife for a b-day, or anniversary or something man, or just for the sake of doing one? Sounds kinda like its got a dance vibe to it so far. Keep up the good work man.
|
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Super,
Just a song for the wife.... Kinda funny really. My B-day is in 10 days, and I just bought her a new DELL laptop. strange! No man, she loves dance stuff, (oakenfold, sasha, etc) so I have been trying to get a long self mix done for her. This is only the beginning. Thanks for the listen. Vocals? maybe, but surely not me! - Doc |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Chris...percussion sounds really good in it...and the little piano-ish thing is very cool. Give me a buzz tonight if you get a chance. Wanna ask you about something.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Roy,
That was actually a tribute to you for that section. Figured you would like that when I heard it. Decided to loop it and add it. Seemed to fit in a strange way. Will call you later, Star Wars tonight though.... - Doc |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Very interesting stuff. It's not my normal type of music I listen to, but I like what you did with the panning effects on "Fade" and how things pick up tward the end. Nice sound.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
"Here's an older one.... I haven't posted this one before though...
Nice Dreams ~ J " Ohh my freaking lord, wow! It's so refreshing to hear that that type of music is still being played today! Intel Doc pointed this jem out to me! I love the begging kind of "The Prisoner-ish" Maiden riff in the begging. Oh,and the lead solo, awesome. It's such a relief to actually hear a great vocal too, no "cookie monster vocals" or the when I can't sing "scream" approach that todays metal bands are plauged with. Excelent job on the prodution. Sweet! please share more of these guys! Or heck, the biggest compliment I can give is point me to a place where I can buy there music. |

BretFarewell, Sorry it took a while to listen...(I have to redo my setup to hear 'streamer' stuff, and I've been in session non-stop for a while).........this isn't my genre of choice(mainly the vocal style), but you've done a great job with this, IMO. Guitars sound great(what guitars did he/they use?)...bass and drums too. You done good... -Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
*blushing*
Thank you jstunner. I sincerely appreciate your comments. That is an old track originally done on 2", but brought into Pro Tools and reworked ever so slightly more recently. There is some recent interest in that album and looks like it might get re-released through a different record company. If that takes place, the mixing will be updated to 2005 standards, but the performances with not be altered or "added-to". You'd know the gent who mixed this and the rest of the songs from that album if I mentioned his name. But I will not here as this forum is pretty dedicated to "PT today" it seems and I respect that. Your kind words about my voice are really appreciated as are the rest of your comments. That CD is currently out of print, but if you would like MP3's of the record, just email me and I will send you all you can handle. Cheers! ~ J |

Wow
Joz, did you do the recording for the band? I really think it sounds incredible - well done man. Ghosty |
Re: Latest stuff
thanks Ghostcage.
It's my own band. Thats was just a pre-mix that I did yesterday. It'll be punchier and deeper later. http://www.overnightlows.com/music/wheredowego.mp3 If you liked that one, maybe you'll like this one: http://www.overnightlows.com/music/thebreaks.mp3 Joz |
Re: Latest stuff
Joz,
I have become a huge fan of your stuff. Thanks for sharing. Great guitar tones. And consistently great songs. Scott |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
I sent you an e-mail powerjoe. I will certainly buy that album if it gets re-released. Again, great work. It will be awesome to hear the album mixed with todays technology. However, when you have a performance like that, I don't think it matters whether it's mixed in PTLE or with a bunch of K-Mart boom boxes recorded from tape to tape. A good song is a good song no matter what media it's in.

Joz,
Good stuff as usual... again, this was not all done on the 002. You still using that SSL board? - Doc |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Seeing as you've done this all alone at home, I can really apreciate that as I'm a one man act myself. Very nice dynamics on the song Do you remember. I like the way you brought it in with the quiet guitar in the begging. It's very remenicent of George Harrison (yes of the Beatles). The ending where it picks up is nice too, I like how it gets nice and full at the end. I'd add just a touch of a high frequncey boost to add some "air" to your vocals as I think it will bring out the natural rasp in your voice. This is by no means my normal type of music I listen too, but I found it very enjoyable.

As for the other track, it sort of reminds me a little of the british pop kinda stuff like Cold Play/Oasis... somewhere in there. Sounds good, but I have never been much into the style honestly myself. Keep up the good work though man! |
Re: new Overnight Lows
Finally back up and fully networked. Here's the other 3 songs that we ran that session. Again, these are merely preliminary takes for a demo. One of the guitars changes to bass in songs 3 and 4, and he is definately re-performing his parts. We'll improve his tone and get rid of the hiss on the retakes. But here they are in their raw glory:
Song 2 Song 3 Song 4 and the first one that I posted (and the only one that I know the title for) is Summertime |
Re: new Overnight Lows
Hey Joz,
Quite a catchy tune, I like the verses more than chorus. You really have that polished professional sound down. What you mics you using to get those great drum sounds? Everything sounds so punchy and clear. Good job Chris Tempest |
Re: new Overnight Lows
Joz-
Sounds great. Although I think you guys as a band are really the "secret" behind your engineering... easy to get great sounding stuff when the performances are great! Good job! |
