I might just have to get myself one of these...I'm not really a bass player, but it would be nice to get a better sound of my bass tracks.

nice work.

I'm a big fan, it's one of the best $250 studio purchases I've made.

i second this. where did u get it for 250? i got mine for 300 but i want to get another one , because i also play bass for my band and it's a pain to always have to take the sansamp out of my rack of live gear and put it in with my recording stuff, so i'd rather have one for each =)

Re: Latest stuff

I bought it at sam ash in the city, maybe it was about $300 with tax, don't remember the exact amount but it sounds great!!

hello everyone. i have never posted in this section but i will start now and would like some feedback if anybody has the time to check out the latest band i've recorded. you can find the music at www.purevolume.com/newatlantic . they are streams so keep that in mind. it is the first 4 songs on there you can view them all until the 21st then i think they will take a few down. thanks.

Stew,
Almost missed your post...'Blue Eyes' is great...I really do love the vocals on this, the instrumentation, and the song itself. Acoustic guitars sound great with the piano, which shines by itself toward the end.
This song is the only downloadable mp3, which I prefer, so I haven't heard the others yet. Will probably listen to them later.......but, great job by all on this.

You other guys should check it out.....very nice.

I also liked the song, especially the vocals and guitar. I would have liked to hear a bit more drum, sounds like the drum was mic'd via a room mic and overheads only so the snare and kick don't sound as tight as I would have liked. I wouldn't want to turn the song into a hard rock tune, but just some very subtle drum adjustments.

Otherwise it's a great song, nice job.

yeah, "blue eyes" sounds really good. It sounds like you're recording in a really good sounding room.

I'd be curious to hear what kind of gear you guys are using. Very nice work.

Thanks, I run my RBI back through my Avalon and that works well too... I have two purchases I need to make in the next few weeks, a soundelux 251 and an AMS Neve 1073.

Keep ya posted on the sound of that combo!

Why the AMS? Which one too? The DPA? or the 1073. I am loving the pair of X73i's that I just got. Guitars were MAD this weekend.

AMS Neve makes two models the 1073DPA and the 1073DPD, the DPD is the digital version which I don't need. The 1073 is a dual channel Neve 1073 for under $3000, that's not too far off from a pair of Vintechs. If you look at the 1073, X73i, Great River, they all sound good, just different. I say buy them all!!

a question to throw out there...

a question for the "latest stuff" lurkers/posters/misc denziens....

I love this venerable thread as much as everyone else does, but I was curious; would you guys rather have this thread or a dedicated forum, like prosoundweb and gearslutz...

just thinking it would be cool to get the mac and tdm folks work/opinions/input, and more discussion of individual songs, easier to search, etc.

just a thought. I wonder if digi would go for that.

Yes I agree, I wish this wasn't in the LE forum because other user's might not know it's here.
Would Digi make this a separate forum... let me know how that works out for ya.

Re: Latest stuff

Gene.

I really enjoyed that. I was brought up on classical music.
Where were your mics positioned? I guess you were limited as to where you could put them? The piano sounds good, but the violin sounds like he/she is standing about 20 feet behind the piano. Pity you can't drop a mic right over the violin. Anyway, great effort under obviously less-than-perfect circumstances.

Gene Backlin 02-15-2005 05:38 AM

Re: Latest stuff

Thanks Marc,

Yeah, the violinist was practically sitting in the pianist's lap. It was a small church and I could not get too close. The pews were about 3 ft away from the performers. I set a stereo pair off to the side so I could get violin on left and piano right about 20 feet away. That way I could not see anyone knocking over the mics.

Thank you for listening !

Take Care,
Gene

I'm working a bit more on the mix to try to bring the violin up a bit more, or put the piano back a little, or a little of both. I will re-post when completed.

Thank you again for listening !

Thanks, Riad. I use Mbox and a 2.4 GHz AMD PC. I record guitar and vocals live, then dress it up with MIDI.

Re: X73 Test

hahaha ya, the funny thing was the neighbors to my left were selling their house that night. Granted I have this setup in a townhouse, but it works well. The cool thing is that the walls on either side have 3 foot thick firewalls all the way up. So the sound is pretty low, but loud in my house. So the other night (back to the story) the neighbors were having an OPEN HOUSE. Perfect test for the new residents right. The drummer in this band is by far the loudest I have ever had in the place. I mean you could hear him outside, so I am sure that it was next door too. Not the case, they knew that the drumming was going on, but it was not that loud. Now the guy outside though asked me when I was walking the dog " are you the drummer?" I said "No, but I run a studio out of the house at night." With a very concerned look he said simply "Every night????" That made me laugh, but ya know I am nice and stop at 9:00 to 10:00 and do not play drums after 9:00. The guitars are in a middle room and are not that loud. Enought to get the tone we need. Just thought it was funny.

This project is coming along. Having a hard time getting the POP snare and snappy kick that he wants, be we are close. Interesting though on the audio level of the MP3. MY mix was a lot louder unless it is really my speakers here at work? Sounds great at home.

Todd,
Just listened to 'Falling from the stars' and 'On this date'...both songs are good and have interesting changes.....and as always, your voice sounds great. I'm also hoping to get 'Lovers' with your fine vocals mixed very soon now.

thanks, Roy
