Shawn,
Good song, my friend...very clean production and well mixed...like the guitar sounds(and the solo), and good job on the vocals.
Looking forward to hearing the completed version.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. Hopefully I will get well soon so I can sing it properly. You can hear spots in there where I'm trying really hard not to cough while I'm singing.

I like this sound. I am not sure what you would need to change. Sounds almost ready for release the way it is.

Re: My first complete Mbox project

Thanks John, much appreciated.

All scratch; done in one day.
Here's some stuff I have planned to change:
I'd definitely like to do the vocals over again when I'm feeling better and not coughing up a lung. Plus, I've already rewritten the harmonies to follow the chord structure a bit more, but I'm not well enough to sing them.
The drums are also a bit sketchy, some of the cymbal crashes are poorly placed, and the guitar solo needs a little bit at the end.

Man, I can't wait to finish this one now...

Here's three more to go with Soft Earth (which I posted a few months ago) - let me know what you think of any/all of them!

I had recently recorded some friends of mine, so they could have a live demo cd to send out for possible gigs, I had posted some of the tunes and appreciated the feedback. In addition to the cd, I put together a DVD for them also. Here is a clip of some photos I shot in addition to the video itself.

I hope you enjoy !

Gene, very well done, as usual.

Jon, I've only gotten to listen to Fark so far, but it's really cool. I like the retro vibe. What instruments/sample sets did you use?

Hey all!

Here's a link to a new track of mine:

http://bartlebymusic.com/highpage.html

The song is called High (in the sky).

It's another, quiet (then bombastic), melancholic (then joyful), epic pop song.

Equipment used: Roland XP-30 keyboard, Lexicon MPX-100 Reverb, Squire Jazz Bass,
Behringer Bass V-Amp, Rode NTK mic, MultiLoops (drums), T-racks mastering,
Throatcoat Tea (with honey).

I hope you can check it out! And if ya feel like it, lemme know what you think...

Thanks!

Nice grooves on all three of these new ones...and some of the sounds are cool(I love the beginning of 'Rust')...the congas on 'Fark' sound really good too. Good job.

Cheers chap - main stuff on these tracks is Reason, some loops from Creative Essentials, a lot of keyboards from Sonico Refills Vol 04 Vintage Keyboards, my own synth patches in Reason, and also some Pro 53, a bit of impOSCar, some FM7 and a bit of V-Station too, plus my Musicman Stingray bass and some mates on guitar on some loops we made. Oh and there's one or two guitar loops from the Ross Charles Rising Funk CD (Time & Space).

Of Madness and Magic

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Here goes nothin...

My new track (East Side, Baby!) is ready for listening. This is my first track I've made with Pro Tools and my new 002r, so it was definitely a learning experience. This is also the first song I've made in 2 years or so. I think it is my best track yet. I have some work to do on mixing technique, and next on my list of gear to buy is some decent monitors (probably KRK V6). I need to work on my levels too. Due to some peaks in the song normalizing it didn't get it as loud as it should be. I'll do better next time.

The lyrics were written by a friend of mine and performed by my brother, friend, and I. Please be gentle, none of us are really musicians, and are definitely not rappers. Please be sure to clear some space around your booty while this is downloading so it will have some room to wiggle.

Get it here (192kbit) or or here (128k) depending on your bandwidth.

CREDITS:
Lyrics written by: Caesar
Vocals performed by: Cozmo, Bigj, and Caesar
Beatbox & Drums: Cozmo
Keyboards: Cozmo
Bass: Cozmo

Recorded at: Straightjacket Sounds (aka my 2nd bedroom) :P

Gear Used:
002r, Orbit V2 (keys and basses), M-Audio Nova Mic, Micro Korg Vocoder, Dr-008 for drums.

Well Roy,

You know I dig it!

(If anyone would like to collaborate on anything just shoot me an e-mail...I'm sort of "between jobs" at the moment and have a lot of spare time for this kind of thing right now...or if you hear of any employment opportunities out there you'd like to pass on to me: chriscavell(at)cavellstudios.com)

Doc,

I know you're out of town for the weekend, but I went ahead and took a listen to the preprod. takes you've got up. Good stuff. As for recording and fidelity, I think the last two have the best sound. The tunes could definitely use a producer to envision and translate what you've got into a final album. I'm thinking for the drums you'd do best with a very simple equation: ride+hat+crash+snare+kick+floor tom+nothing else except a kick***** drummer = great music! Get a drummer that can play brushes for real...you know, flip back and forth between the front and back end of the brush mid-swing and never miss a beat. For the bass...go demeter baby! We've talked alot about pre's lately...and to be honest, I'd go for a 1081 on him. The 72's aren't the same, but the 73i's should sound identical to a 81 when not cranked (there's a third gain stage in the 81 that only comes into play when cranked...otherwise they should be identical). I'd rent or borrow a vox mic and depending on the tune use a 72 or a 73/81 for the pre. What kind of vox mics do you have at your disposal these days?

Cheers to all and have a great weekend,
Chris

Cozmo...I dig the old-school hip-hop beat and feel to East Side, Baby! On occasion it's a syllable gets lost here and there. A little voiceover compression on the vocal tracks would clear that right up. Nice Work!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Gene,

Great job on the live stuff! BTW, Mike Reid wrote "I can't make you love me." Keep it up, it's really good work. These small coffee shop style live gigs can be some of the most difficult to get a good product out of.

Cheers,
Chris

Ferrante,

I don't know what to say...Asian Sun is a GREAT composition. I really dig it! (post more please)

Spkguitar,
Great tune...and you may want to keep those flu-ridden vocals...it might be that it adds a sense of strain to the tune you'd never be able to recreate in a healthy state! If I've got time I'll send you an e-mail about it...so watch your in-box...

Cheers,
Chris

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Roy-O-Boy-O,

What's this song I've been listening to here on repeat?

Oh...Of Madness and Magic. A beauty. Really.

I can't say I'm a big (or small) fan of guitar
instrumentals, but this one breaks down my normal
aversion (boredom). Is that you on the lead guitar?

Damn...the phrasing is so nuanced and it's all so
beauitfully, emotionally rooted in great melodies.

(Jeff Beck an influence?)

The repeating (mandolin?) motif is just enchanting.

I'm gonna keep repeating it here in my office
on this Friday. Fits my minor hangover very gently. Thanks.

Thanks Chris for your kind words.

My biggest challenge was fighting against their pa system, just when I had a good balance (not picking up too much of it), they would crank it up, now giving me a tunnel background.

All in all thou, it was really a lot of fun. This stuff is really making an old man, quite happy ! In my younger days, I would haul my TEAC reel-to-reel's around, I truly just love this stuff !

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Believe me, I understand that...it's been the bane of several modern operas and even symphonies (if you can believe that there are actually symphonies using pa's now!) I've recorded in the past.

I have always been under the firm belief that recitals (to me a coffee shop style gig counts as a recital) should be entirely acoustic...or at least very similar in volume to a purely acoustic show.

Gene Backlin 10-08-2004 01:57 PM

That is unbelievable !

I have my daughter's High School Choir, next Thursday in concert live in the school's theater and I am looking forward to it. I think I am more excited about it than she is. It is the same group I recorded 3 times last year, they are really a good bunch of kids. I want to get them in a better room in a non live environment, the theater is ok, but has a lot of challenges. I know the Choir director is keen on the idea, we discussed it last year, it will be just a matter of scheduling the time.

I've got another one here.

Subtle Reminder is the new one.

Still sort of unfinished, don't like the lyrics, I'll want to mess around with the drums more, but I kind of like the vibe.

I'd especially be interested in any drum programming feedback.

thanks.

Re: Asian Sun - complete piece.

badperson,
As always, I like your voice and vocal style...on the production, a few things I would suggest-
The percussion needs to build and change up on this one...the overall loop you've got going is fine for one section, but not throughout (I heard somebody call this a 'glorified' click track). The vocal is a bit buried, and the guitar licks are too present. Your fine vocal IS this song, and everything else should be there to best enhance it.
I think it's another great bp song, but that's what I'm hearing for now...
