Hi bigbubbaj,
I really liked the Dan Walker tracks. The guitar does sound really great. Thanks also for the breakdown of info. on how you did the recording. Did you have any phasing issues using all those mics.?
I have never known much about the Apex 435 mic. How much of the guitar sound quality would you credit to the 435?? I also do a lot of acoustic/classical guitar music and might consider adding it to my collection. I did a quick search, $79, is that price for real??

Cheers,
Ruben

Not really, I kept them less than 3 feet apart, and the angles of the capsules were positioned with phase issues in mind

I would say that 95% of the guitar sound is attributable to the 435s. IntelDoc has used them with the same success. I got them at musiciansbuy.com for 69.95 each.

Thanks for listening

Also I remixed and tweaked the vox and now they sound all warm and cozy. I like them a bunch!Dan Walker - Remixed

Yeah, that's much better. Still has the hyped top end sound, but that's the mic, and possibly the Presonus too. At least now it has some guts. Well done.

Yeah how did I get to your songs, I forgot. Saw your site, the song sounded indeed a bitty psychnautical. Did you make more songs on acid? Very experimental, yet different style than Ummagumma from Pink Floyd. I have used LSD some times but have never been able to do anything with my computer those moments. Too much freakin'

Actually I had taken a few mushrooms at the time. I was a bit tweaked out but still able to function hehe. Don't try this at home kids.

Hi bigbubbaj,
thanks again for all the info.
Ive made a few calls to retailers here in Australia but a lot of them arnt selling the Apex 435's. Ive got an uncle coming from the states in November, do you know if the mics. would work here or if they run on different power specs.

Cheers,
Ruben

No I haven't, I would love to though. While I enjoy recording live performances, sometimes the background can really disrupt the mood.

Another problem is geographics. These people are my good friends, but I drove 7 hours to their gig. I do not know if they would be able to find the time. I have suggested the option though, they seemed interested, so we will see. I hope so.

Thank you so much for your kind words, it is greatly appreciated.

Thank you also Roy, I am glad you enjoyed it.

Roy - I like your new song Of Madness and Magic. I am trying to emulate your GAT with my QS8.2. I am getting close; however, I’m wondering how you are running this sound (effects, EQ…)? Would you be so kind to share it?

Roy Howell 09-01-2004 09:57 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here *DELETED*

Thanks John.....my solo guitar sound on 'Madness' has a bit of slow, shallow flange mixed in.....if you have Waves plugs, you might try the MetaFlanger plugin. Are you using some guitar-type preset in the QS8.2 to try to emulate this sound?

badperson - downloaded a whole bunch of your tracks. i like them a lot. so does my lady friend. good material - keep doing what youre doing! your vox are down to earth and pleasant. guitar is sweet.

roy howell- madness and magic - very cool track! like the vibe of this one! youre always coming out with some crazy tracks, no doubt this one is too. good stuff.

aussie 169 - the intro of your song - what kind of car is that? caught my attention right away good song too.

gene backlin- morning dew has one hell of a dramatic intro! thats why i like the orchestra. mood somber. very mellow track. but it builds up to an elaborate arrangement. nice work here.

good work gentlemen

Thanks for that. We're just having a bit of fun basically.
The singer's name is Brenda Thompson. It's hard to believe she's a 40 year old mother of 4, and recently a grandmother.

There are some more tracks on that site if you are interested.

All the vocals are about to be replaced because I just bought a TLM-103

Aussie169 09-06-2004 04:41 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

OK, here's our test track with the new TLM-103.

It's only a rough take of a new song idea so don't judge the performace too closely.

Acoustic guitar and vocal, both through the same signal chain, which is.....
TLM-103 - Buzz Audio SSA1.1 - Mindprint Envoice (compression stage) - Mindprint DI-Port (A/D) - 001 via S/Pdif

There's some chorus on the guitar and verb on the vocal.... and a C4 and L2 on the mix. But no eq at all in PTLE.... it's totally flat. (except for a 50Hz HPF enabled on the preamp while tracking the guitar only.)

File here.

Oh, and a note to Roy.... don't bother downloading.... it's the same as you already have.

Well, I sure can't fool you guys...sure, I call them 'canoe trips' when I go to Arkansas, but I really just hang out up in the woods with the kid from Deliverance......he's the only one who likes to hear me play the banjo with my slide.

Hey Luzer,

Digging Cardiff Giant. I think there are some really cool riffs and playing throughout the song.

a few things i might play around with a little:
In my opinion there seems to be a little bit too much reverb on the snare.
it may be the download quality of the song but the kick sounds a tiny bit muddy. a mid roll off right around 160-240 hz could help that i think.

cool song man, keep up the good work!

thanks man.

i deff. agree with you on the kick. and it's a good thing u didnt hear the reverb of the snare
on an old mix =). i think its cuz i used the RVerb medium room.

now i'm starting to get into plate reverbs for drums but i still gotta mess around with them more
a little bit..

also I have a hard time mixing my own bands songs. i can't seem to ever have them come out
exactly how i want them

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

luzer,

nice work. I like the sound of the drums, to me the snare sits pretty well, the reverb thing doesn't really jump out at me, it's just the combination of the verb and the dark sound of the snare. I like the part aroun 1:25 where the drums are by themselves, they have a lo-fi quality I like.

What are you using for mics/pres? good songs, nice performance and production

Aussie, nice sound on the guitars. Good production overall.

Good live recording.

Thank you for the kind words.

I had a single Studio Projects C4 on the guitar, but to tell you the truth, the sound of that guitar is that guitar. It is a Goodall, http://www.goodallguitars.com/ and has just a wonderful tone.

I applied only a slight bit of reverb, hardly any because the room, an ice cream shop with a stage, had a bit. In fact, there was a challenge to avoid too much of a natural boomy sound. There was also a pa system set up which did not help any, I did not tie into that, because it was buzzing like bees. I went direct with my own mics.

Here are a few more selections from that night.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Matt,

I just downloaded your song. Neat stuff. I have a few suggestions for your next mix:

1. I like to hear more kick drum. Maybe sharpen it up a bit. Sounds a little muddy to me.
2. When your vocals first come in, I think they are a bit buried behind the Gats. When you get to the 1:32 mark your vocals are very nicely placed with reference to the music level. I tend to like vocals that are not real buried.
3. 2:13 mark – try bring out the lead Gat riff a little more in the mix to the level at the 2:26 mark.

I liked it!!!

Any more?
