jono1,
I hear a good song there...I like the singer's voice very much(you?)...The main thing I would work on is tightening it up overall. The drummer sounds like a good player, and the drums could come up a touch...I'de leave the bongo/congas out at least until the drums come in. Just a few suggestions I hear...
But as I say, I hear a really good song there, and this is a good beginning. Post back with any updates as you go, so we can listen.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks for checking out my track Roy, I used a Dean BW6 Backwoods 6-String Banjo for the banjo on the track. I usually like to blend acoustic type instruments and samples with a lot of my tracks. The live instruments in this track were the banjo, snare, and I played the keys sample that is in the background panning right and left between the speakers slightly. Mind you I used a VST for the keys, but still played them in real time with no MIDI hooked up. I did a bit of processing on the banjo to get it to sound so "up front" also like a bit of compression and ambient reverb from the audiosuite in PT.

This record I produced, engineered and mixed. Mixed in PTLE. But I did have the luxury of tracking through a Neve though.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi guys,..
well i went and bought myself a Tascam 38 after i got my old master reels back from this studio after nearly twenty years. Man i thought they wouldnt be playable. They were covered in mold, and really poorly wound. I was pretty heartbroken, but I got out a magnifying glass, and used some home-made dental tools to carefully clean the mold off the tapes. Then I carefully rewound the tapes, and baked them. They really didnt weather too well, but there was enough left to get a decent sound out of them, so I preserved a couple of hours worth of my old bands material, and some other gems that are priceless to me. Because of the state of the tapes, I will probably never be able to play them again... so thank goodness for modern technology. (although, after listening to this, some of you guys might think it would have been better to just leave it alone)
This isnt exactly my latest stuff, because its pretty old, but I thought you guys might enjoy hearing how protools can be used to preserve and restore old audio.

Laugh or Shed a Tear

I didnt write or sing this song, but I played on it and recorded it. This was from way back in 1985, so it may sound strange. I was the primary songwriter for this band, but this is one of the other guys songs we did. I like the drumming on it. Thats my weird little guitar solo's through out.
Enjoy:)

Here's some of what I've got going on. You can see my progression in engineering by listening to these three in order:

Immortal, Invisible - http://www.onethingministries/immortal.mp3

I'm the artist on the first two songs (along with my band). The third song is someone else.

Gravel,
Sounds pretty good man! I think that you can nudge a few spots forwards and back and tighten it up some. I undestand it is from an old reel. Can you isolate the tracks on it?

I think that the parts, if they can be nudged will definitely tighten up though if you could do that.

Cool retro feel though!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Well it was a little more difficult than might seem. The drums I had to work with were a stereo submix. How I wish that I had all the individual drums to work with. That would have been a dream.

The stuff with my old band, I am pretty much just going to leave them as they are, mainly mixing to try to just catch the original performance. I really didnt do much editing and sound-shaping because I was worrried the other guys might think I took too much liberty with the song. I dont have a lot of time to work with them on one hand, and on the other hand, since nothing will ever be done with these versions anyway, I thought I would clean them up and present them as-is for the sake of preservation and posterity. At least they live again!!

This song was actually left off of the original release. Like I said, asides from playing on it, I didnt write it or have much say in the production. Subsequent tunes which were my creations, and my production I will take more care to tighten up.

If you guys could have seen these tapes though when I first got them, you would be amazed they would play at all. I sure was!

Thanks for the lesten and the comments!!

I've been hanging around here for a few months now, pretty much coincident with my songwriting/performing/recording career, but I've never posted anything on this thread.

On my own terms, I've made a lot of progress. In absolute terms, my music sucks, and my mixing sucks more (if that's possible); the question is just how much, and I'd quite like to know. So, for everyone's vilification and general mirth, I present to you:

Counting the Beats

In particular, I find that all of my mixes actually make my ears hurt, like there's unpleasant pressure on my eardrums. Can anyone tell me why?

Thanks

Oh, and it was the beer that put me up to this...

JonM,
I really like this song...the chords, the simple instrumentation, and the vocal all feel good together. There are some things that may can improve the mix, but I'm too tired to get specific tonight...suffice for now to say, I really enjoyed the song.

Roy

Thanks for taking the time to listen to the song - heaven knows life's short enough as it is. Thanks also for the kind words and the admirable diplomacy of your post, and I'm glad you enjoyed the song.

If you could outline some of the things that could make the mix better, I'd be very grateful. I'm kind of aiming for simple arrangements that put as much emphasis on space as instrumentation, if you get my drift, but I still manage to make 7 parts sound busy! I've been doing my best to improve, but my mixes always sound muddy. ANy pointers would help me on my way a bit.

Thanks again

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Jon,
Sorry to leave you hanging like that...I was very tired (my dad's in the hospital), and I should have waited to post that I'de heard it.
Anyway...I'm listening again, and again, I really do like the song and even the mix overall. There are just a few things that are contributing to it being slightly 'boomy' here and there. I hear 3 things that could be EQed a little better...the bass, the very nice guitar that plays the intro (and throughout), and at times your voice too. The acoustics hard left and right sound fine, and it's kind of cool that they are supplying the percussion on this.

Without being there, I can't be too specific, but I would first try rolling back some low EQ on the things that seem boomy. That should get you started.

I'm hoping Inteldoc will hear it and can advise you more specifically. He has done some excellent stuff with acoustics/vocals, and I think he'll have some good ideas for you.

Definitely a good song, and I like your concept of production. Please keep us posted on your progress, and any new things you want to post.

Hi Roy

Sorry to hear about your dad. Sorry for hassling you in such circumstances, and I hope things are OK.

Thanks for the pointers on the mix. I will try EQ sweeping again and see if I can remedy the muddiness. I do most mixing on headphones, and occasionally through my hifi. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get some proper monitors next month. Maybe that will make things easier. And with the number of CDs I burn to check in the car and on the stereo in my office at work, it will probably work out cheaper.

I'm working on a couple of new things at the moment, and I'll post if they come to anything. At the moment they refuse to be bashed into a usable shape.

Loved the Vegas track btw. That's a mean bass down the backbone, and the guitar work is awesome.

Thanks again for listening.

Hello everyone! I got my mbox a couple of weeks ago and been reading this forum ever since. Alot of new info.

I was surprised how much great music can be found on this thread (and gifted people)!!!

Well here's my contribution for this thread (it's a bit heavy):

Catch the Son

I play bass for King Muffin and I've tried to master this song at home. This song and 2 others were tracked at a local studio using TDM system (not sure, too new to Pro Tools). Tracking was done in about 6 hours for all the three songs. The next day we spent mixing. Unfortunately time run out and we managed to mix only 2 songs of the three.

One reason for getting the mbox was that I could try mix this last last song at home using PT LE. I know it will be hard but I'll try to learn as I go

I would really appreciate if you could give me any advice on what sounds wrong on "Catch The Son".

EDIT: And thank you for listening

This is cool, Jon, don't beat yourself up. It reminds me of Cracker, remember them (listen to one of their ballads).
You have to look at the bigger picture, we do this to make music. Because this is a forum for Protools, people critique the mix but even if you have a bad mix, the song can still have vibe. In other words, I think the song works.
Now, I would be curious to hear your other stuff. Could you make a whole record of this type of music "work"?
I've never posted my own music on this forum, not out of fear or anything, just that I write songs, record them on my little 001 as pre-production for when I record them in a better studio. Maybe I will shoot some stuff up as well.
But as for you, don't speak so much negativity over your music...

Catch the son sounds good to me. I am impressed by the clarity of the drums, and the huge fat guitars. At around 2 minutes the vox get a bit washed out(chorus?), then they seem to kick in again.
The high end feels a bit hot in a few spots.

Aside from that, you guys rock!

Thank you Justin! This was just the kind of feed back I was hopeing for. I should be able to fix the problem with the high end. Until now I only been working on the stereo mix but like you said I might have to go back and try to correct the mix on that vocal part.

The only problem I've run into is that the studio had all these Waves plugins and I've got to replace them with what I've got if I'm going to mix these song all over again.

Thank you for helping me!

Roy,

Great song. You know, when I get really famous, sold out arenas all over the world, made 50+ albums, jammed with B.B. King, had Jerry Lee play piano in one of my songs and ressurected the guitar way of Robert Johnson I will state in a interview that "everythings that left now is to do a song together with Roy Howell"

JonM,
Thanks so much...my dad is 'on the mend' I think.
On your song, I want to emphasize that the song itself is great. I'm always reluctant (when asked) to make suggestions about somebody's work, because I have to put focus on the negative when 99% of it may be positive. That's the case here, I think. You captured a great feel that comes across, and that's rare. So, just wanted to make that clear.
By the way, I spoke to Inteldoc/Chris today, and he said he's emailed you. Let me know how it goes.
thanks again, Roy

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey, I like this set of songs. Good stuff y'all. Particular props to Berkley square, beautiful recording job. I didn't realize it was live until someone coughed in the middle. Good stuff. or, as they say in german, GOOD STUFF!

Seven Falls is also very nice, I like the drum sounds. Very good mood.

Minute maid.. I like this song's sounds. I agree that the bongos should go away from the beginning, though I'd just pull them out altogether. Actually, I'd keep them in when the drums come in, but drop them down and pan them in closer to the kit. I'd make the drum mix more traditional overall. The whole thing's a bit lopsided feeling now. Nice voice. and good lyrics too, from what I got.

The Foreboding. I think this sounds really good, you shouldn't be so hard on yourself. I'd pull the drums up, and maybe bring the lead-y guitar up a bit between the lines with some automation. But very good, what's the vocal mic? reminds me of Nick Drake or the voice from that british group that did "the clearing"- the name's not coming to me. Damn. I hate it when this happens. They had that other song that began "Friday night we went down to Archie's" and thenn you couldn't understand anything for a while, and then the chorus came at the end... "went for the weekend, stayed for hte summer" or something like that. I'll think of it. Any help? Point is, good song. I don't know if it's the MP3, but there's some kind of trilly-warbly distortion sound throughout. I don't hear it on the lead guitar. I can't quite place what it is. Have you checked the correlation? I'd like to hear a CD version of this. Very nice. I especially like the ending. I'm going to listen to the other songs on the page and see if I still hear that distortion thing. I say "Quit the day job!" (Yeah, I'm still hearing it on fly, (cool moog) sounds like the bassier stuff and vocals is distorting or warping or something.) (I've downloaded the songs, and I'm keeping them! HA!)

Mistery is very cool. I like the flutey sound that starts off the piece. Is that vocals? Oh, and I like the keyboardy horns too. cool track.

Oh, and Roy, I like the new Moon song (I smell a concept album) Ripping into the verse is ver nice. Just a rockin' track. The keys sing too! Wreet! Damn this is good stuff. Lightning licks! I love the breakdown here. Dum dum chacka chacka. Reeew! deedauloodeedauleedwweeett! God, I'm doing whatever the ascii version of air guitar is. Wicked. Good out too. My only complaint is...could you just fart into the tape machine and release that as a track once in a while? They're not all supposed to be great songs, man!

Oh, and Roy if you do the moon concept album, you should do a cover of "moon over parma". Just for [bleep]'s sake.

Well, I'm off to mix a few things before the inevitable 3 am bedtime. Nintey-nine's, y'all.

I almost forgot to mention this... I produced a new song that's up on my studio page, it's called Wendy, tell me what you think, check it out on my sounds page:

http://www.byolaf.com/Studio/Sounds.htm
You can download the whole song by right-clicking the name, or listen to a sample in the auto load box.

I should be posting an early draft of an unfinished song there by a group called 'Feathergun' tomorrow, (oh, screw it, I'm doing it now. Sigh. Websuck.) that track's turning out pretty good, though they moved back to chicago, so this may be all there is. Sorry 'bout the drums.

And am I the only one who finds it wierd that a guy in a band called 'Feathergun' would pen a song called 'without a gun'?
-Olaf
I just discovered some really wierd static through my stereo, it only happens when I do something on screen like move the mouse or type or something. Very strange. I think I'll waste a few hours recording static! Yay! I say Feh! to rent!

Thank you too for the comments...I do have quite a few 'moon' songs now, don't I? Last night, I pulled out 'Sleepy Moon', which is the first song I posted here (just laid back guitars). Thanks again for that, Roy.

I've been in contact with ChrisIntelDoc and the session is now in his hands. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do to clean up the song. Then I will study what he's done and see if I can learn some to do it myself. Thanks so much for setting that up. Major gratitude for that at this end.

Guit4Brains. Thanks for the encouragement. I guess there's so much stuff that's so good here that I kind of feel awkward posting stuff that is mixed, through my ignorance, in such a haphazard fashion, and played just barely competently. I go through phases of thinking that my music is kind of OK to phases of getting hypercritical over everything and hating it all. When I posted I was very much in the latter.

I have never thought about the songs I do in terms of an album, I just find a few chords, write a lyric, start recording, realise it's all wrong and start again, arrange it, mix it then go on to the next song. I just get a real kick out of the whole creative process thing. And I'd really like to get better at it. Thanks for taking the time to listen and reply.

Rabidium (cool handle)

Thanks also for that breathless paragraph. The vocal mic is an NTK. I love it very much. I don't know the clearing or whatever so I can't help you, but I hate it when that happens. Hope you've remembered what it is or you won't be able to sleep I'm afraid I don't know what correlation is to check, but the 'distortion' is most likely a combination of a noisy PC and the traffic from the main road we live 5 yards back from. You're welcome to the songs, btw, although it's all just clutter on your harddrive. Oh, and the day job stays for the forseeable future, and beyond. Thanks very much.

Thanks again to everyone who listened. I'll go and crawl back under my rock now.

Awesome guitar sounds when everything kicks in. When I get home from work I'm going to download the whole song and hype up my children with it so they don't sleep for a week. Great stuff.

Oh, and a feathergun is no kind of gun anyway, if you ask me, hence the song. But what do I know??

Jon,
I remixed it in about 1.5 to 2 hours tonight. It is a HOT mix, but I really think that you are going to like it.... If you want me to post the link, let me know. I have the WAAV file in the FTP access area for you. I will get the session up there in a day. I still need to write the Eventide and Lexicon stuff to a track for ya. Let me know and I will make a link here for the tune. it is pretty HOT and I am not sure if I like it that hot, just seemed to fit tonight when I was throwing things around.... EQ wise!

Had fun with it and it definitely cleared it up! Got rid of the road and air noise the best I could. There were a few pops in the bass that I tried to fix, but for the most part left them..

Used:
OUTBOARD:
Eventide for its ANALOG Delay - subtle
Lexicon PCM-90 with a verb I built
BBE for Bass guitar enhancement versus MAXXBass

PLUGIN:
TrueVerb for vocal tails
WAVES 2 Tap delay - very lightly
LA2A for VOX track
RComp for Guitars and Bass
D3 Focusrite EQ on VOX

TWEEKS:
Snare I just cut it up.... No need for the added noise
Doubled the Electric Guitar part
Tad of verb on the Piano - brought it all out better

Post the LINK!!!!

- Doc

FTP around the world is pretty cool!
