Some enigma type female samples in an arabic tonal scale, ran through that reverse processor you have on the key pads, used with discression would be way cool. However, that's just my take on the tune... I will stop as I am starting to produce/marr another artist's vision. You have what I call a pristine, crisp sounding top end on the drum kit, reminds me of the police. I studied the mix for a while over a few days and my only thought was that the kick is a tad low on the mix. If you can get the kick up a bit to lock in with the bass it would be perfect. I am only talking a tad more 5% or so at the beater/attack point and the low end feel it point, but very gently, as its real close to on target. Great job though, again just IMHO, I am also very intersted in how the singer approaches these tracks. I am also interested in what mic. order you used to mixed the drums. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DoyleMusic, Great job on the tune with the female vox. My only thought was I would love to hear a grand piano in the mix ala. Sarah Mclaughlin (is that spelled right) Vs. the intro key patch, that to my ear always sounds clanky, maybe just to me... . Its just my preference, as I have never liked that particular patch with close verb on the elec piano, I have never gotten it to work well with anything. You did a great job and its works for you, I am just always curious how things would sound with other patches. Since you didn't use midi it would be hard to flip through patches and see how they fit the mix though. You are one heck of a precise key player, as I could swear that its quantized midi, as the timeing of the notes is so exact. As I said, great job, I am just picking at straws. This is my first song recorded entirely in PT LE 6.1!! I'm looking for a whole lotta criticism:) I'd be grateful for your feedback regarding my mixing/mastering skills, or the lack thereof, and any tips you can give me regarding how to get the best sounding recording - plugins, etc. Here's my setup: Acoustic Gtr: Guild DC5E with fishman pickups Elect Gtr: Yamaha Pac 904 through a fender Blues junior. Vocals: An MXL (?) studio mic I got on sale when Mars went outta business Bass: Fender P-Bass also run through the Blues Juinior (big mistake?) Drums: Boss Dr-670 (I'm thinking of getting FXpansion's BFD or ableton Live) Synth: Yamaha S03 The only plugins i use outside of Digirack is the Waves renaissance bundle. On my master stereo fader I used a Waves Compressor, 6chan EQ and Dither. Thanks for the compliments! I actually tracked the vocals last Friday, but have decided that I do not like them. I spoke to the band, and they have agreed to come back in and re-take them for a small fee. They won 10 hours of time from me, so the three songs we tracked were free, and they really like the result thus far. They are shooting for radio play, so I think it is worth their while to take an hour per song to really nail it down. The singer has a real Incubus feel, but he needs to open up. He was very nasaly and I hate that! Told him that he was out of key and just did not cut it. Kinda harsh words, but crap in, crap out ya know.... Hopefully they will retake it soon.... On the mic order... I usually start with the kick, EQ and get it where I like it, then move to the snare. I use the Overheads, Snare (top and bottom) and kick primarily and just ride the hell out of the faders when I mix the toms. Kinda funny, you spend all the money on 421's and you only automate the hits. That saying, I started their toms at -14bd and set them all there (3 tracks) I then go into each tom hit and automate it with a quick curve to get the attack, then peak it off right at the snare or whatever follows the hit. The overheads do all the work really. I just want the dynamics on the attack from the hits. I then get the overheads after I bring the snare where I like it, and mix to taste. The tom hit are last BTW. I usually mute them until I get the 4 mics how I want. When all said and done, I buss the entire 8 tracks in this case out to a stereo AUX track. Add a overall EQ, a Rcomp and set it to drums and tweek accordingly to having NO CLIPPING. I will eventually be bussing then to a new track through a pair of EL-8 distressors, but that is soon, but not soon enough. That is how I do it for the drums. I treat the guitars in the same manner with the stereo AUX track. Looking to get a few good pre-amps (Vintech 473, API 3124+) that will bypass the digi pre's and use the 5-8 inputs. That will bump it up a notch for sure. Then it is HD time... Hope that this helps! -Doc |

I hear ya' about nasally vox. I don't know what mic. You are using on the vox, however, if you have a large capsule condenser mic. ala. U87 or the like, that can help make a nasally vocal more full. I have even gotten good results with a 421 on vox. As far as out of tune vox... that is a toughie, the obvious solution make the singer go line by line and loop record him; or use auto tune to tighten em' up a bit. I am sure you have thought of all this stuff, I am just posting it for posterity’s sake. I am really impressed with your drum sounds on the top end of the kit, as I said IMHO, just a tad more kick drum and its a perfect sounding kit, which is the toughest instrument to record. I am using the TLM-103 on the vocals. Can use the NTK if needed, but the TLM works for his voice. THey came over tonight and agreed to retaking the tracks. I think that it will be better... I have Auto-Tune, but I really DO NOT like it at all.... Waste really unfortunately. Just sonds too fake IMHO. The kick is bumped a notch and I did some other tweeks to bring it out. Sounds better... Lil' ducking never hurts, but I think I got it sittin' pretty. Thanks again, and I will post when I can.. -Doc |

Just listened to "Savior". Cool song by the way! Really dark and dynamic...I like the solo section alot. Can't criticize the guitar panning because I love that stuff! Hell, Jimmy Page's panning on What Is And What Should Never Be was sloppy and almost silly, but it works for the song and the vibe. Same here. But I really think you should try to get your mp3s encoded at a higher bitrate (at least 128). A 64mbps mp3 doesn't really cut it because you can't get into the true depth of the recording. It would take us a little longer to download (this one took just a few seconds because it's smaller) but it's worth it. I think 192k is really decent..almost CD quality. But 128 is the average BR around here. I couldn't really put a detailed ear on it because the artifacts from the mp3 are too prevalent. Other than that, nice job. The drums are a little dry and distant for my liking (I like them more 'in your face') but that's probably what you were going for. I hear similar sounding drums on other songs in that genre all the time so I'm sure it's all good. Roy, Deep Scarlett is great! As usual you continue to showcase your unique and tasty style. I think I'd recognize one of your songs even if I stubled upon the middle of it fumbling around the radio dial!! So much depth and space to your soundfield! Really makes me feel like my mixes are compressed to death and narrow as hell!! Do I have your permission to mix a Compilation CD of some of your stuff with custom segues, etc. for my own personal use?? My guess is that 60 continuous minutes of your material all blended together nicely could work as a "mood setter"... ifyaknowwhatimean.... I would use just a bit less verb on the vox as well, as you are a strong singer so that needs to be highlighted, not hidden! I might even try a mix where the vocals are more in your face with less efx; and see how an intimate vocal feel (ala. Dave Matthews) works with the tune... When you break into the part where the lyric is "she sails on"... the hard elec guitar (panned left) needs to be eq'ed to be a bit less muddy, I would cut some boxy freq's, around 400hz and add a bit of 1k or 2k to define it more in that break. As I listen again while I type... the tune grows on me. Also the song might have gotten a bit squashed in mastering also.... More L1, Less C1. Although as a mastering engineer, (I have a lot to say on the subject too much to even begin to go into here, so work with what you have) its always best to go to another room to master. Never mix and master in the same room as it encourages mix mistakes to snowball... Its really a very good song in my opinion, ...very strong material, with just a few moves here and there, you have a world class mix. I think the vox and lyrics are very strong. Well done.
