Saving session while it plays

So is this a no no? When I hit Cmd+S while the session is playing it halks playback and produces white noise. I thought you should be able to do this but maybe I'm wrong.

I do it all the time. Never have any problems. It's probably not the best idea to ask your computer to take on another operation like saving files when its already loading/playing files, but I don't seem to have problems.

I'm guessing that an operation like this would require a good deal of processing power. It's all subjective and will probably have lots to do with what kind of session you are running, with what level of processing power is required, then on top of that, can your computer handle doing that.

24-bit 44.1 session. Hardware set at 256 recording/playing from dedicated 250GB 7200speed drive. Cpu was about 17%.

I don't seen any reason why any of that should me giving it a problem.

Does this happen with every session or just the one you are working on right now.

Does it not happen on sessions with less tracks or audio regions?

Are you going nutz with plugins? If so set your buffer to max. 1024 or higher. I always do this when I'm mixing something. I try to keep away from serious plugin use when tracking.

If you make a new session with just one audio track and its audio region, do you still have a problem?

Have you cleaned up your HardDrive lately? Moved the audio to an external and then back?

Maybe the reason why I don't have problems is cause I have a quad core. I'm sure that my ProTools can run pretty well on 2 cores. So that leaves one dedicated for OS use and another one for random processing not related to PT.

Since you have a Dual core, try lowering the processors used inside ProTools to 1. See if it still give your problems. My friends that run Dual Core machines seem to have lots more problem then I ever do. Maybe it just comes down to processing power.

I used to do this on a G5 single processor rig all the time. It shouldn't be a problem. I would definitely try this on another session and see if you have the same results. Try cleaning up the drive, try trashing preferences, databases, all the usual stuff. Repair Permissions etc, I would just start going down the list so to speak because on every rig I've used, I have been able to save during playback. I only know this because i am a bit obsessive when it comes to hitting save during sessions. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!
