Congrats! I'm diggin the ride. Too bad I had to wait 3min to get to the tasty sax solo but.... Very nice work on the production. the vocals and backing are well placed and warm. I'm partial to this kind of groove so you got fan fast. I'd like to know what you used for drums? Thanks for leaving the guitar sample at the end Again, very balanced and defined sound. Looking forward to more.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

RE: drums

It was a big mish-mash of mics. I actually borrowed them from my neighbourhood church! They just installed a brand new $60,000 sound system!! So I used two AKG 'C900' as overheads and two on the snare, AKG C418 clip-on mics for the toms, and AKG D112 on the kick through a hole.

I used the same AKG C900 for the horns, recorded separately, and a Groove Tubes MD1 Tube mic for vox.

Thanx for your positive review!!

Roy, thanks for the kind words. And to answer your question, no, those two songs are done by two different bands. One band is called "When Memories Die", hence the WMD, and the other band is called "No Hollywood Ending". The No Hollywood Ending song is actually off of a full length that I did with them that I'm kind of excited about, as it's going to have national distrobution. I'm hoping something good comes of that. Thanks again.

Lethargy,
Well, good luck with the release, and post some more of it if you get a chance. Thanks for the listen...

Mr.Seven/Darren,
Very nice separation on everything as usual. The drums sound really good, and everything is recorded very well.
Good engineering job indeed...
Thanks, Roy

Ok Guys let me know what you think of this...
I recoreded and mixed everything today...
http://68.192.252.60:8888/~fyd/MP3s/
theres 4 songs there.. you can just right click them and go save target as.. because i cant
leave them up there for that long...
There's some mistakes because my friend that I recorded played everything and he isn't a drummer
he's not bad but not perfect... But we will be redoing this once he has some more songs ready and we will get his brother to play drums .. which he is a drummer...
I useed

Digi 001

Drums:
MXL 603s's Overheads
SM57 Snare Top And Bottom
Audix F10 Tom
Audix F12 Floor Tom
Beta 52 Bass Drum
I dont have any extra pre's yet for the 6 1/4" inputs so I plug everything but the overheads directly into the 1/4" inputs using HI-Z Cables.

Guitar:
SM57 on Top Left Speaker of 4-12 cab with a Marshall AVT 50 Head

Bass:
Into my Gallien Krueger 800RB bass head then out the direct output and into one of the pre's on the digi

Vocals:
MXL 2001

The first one is very interesting...I hear a really good song there. I like the sparse beginning.. I've got all four downloaded, but I'll have to finish listening tomorrow. Gotta sleep for now...

All that I have to say is that you guys don’t stay behind from the guys that have the HD systems… I’m very impressive with everything that I hear from here. Congrats for everyone that posted something here… One day, we are going to see some of these names behind great records and bands… I’m pretty sure about that. Keep up the good work guys…

Sincerely,

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey guys...just finished a new one. Actually this is an old one I recorded many years ago and the master reel disappeared so I felt I needed to re-record it. I hate when that happens... one day I will post the names of all these studio owners that went out of business and still have my tapes. But thats my own fault.
Anyway here's Moving Again

Its a tad different than the last one I posted....
hope you like.

graveleye/Kev,
It will let me download 'King' but not 'Moving again'...I tried all I could. Maybe it's busy so I'll give it a while.
-rh

I tried again, Kev, with no luck. I tried both downloading it and playing it from there. It 'acts' like it's buffering/loading to Quicktime, but I get nothing...
I want to hear it when I can...

graveleye 09-06-2003 08:11 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

That stinks. I was all impressed because I got it to work almost as soon as I uploaded it. I only tried the hi-fi play and not the mp3 though. Let me check into it.

************************************************** **************************

Roy, maybe it is just an anomoly. I have it working right now and even the hi-fi play sounds good. Have you ever had trouble with NoWhere Radio before? I am still new to it.

Nice work posterchild!

You've done it again! Fabulous..

Things I like: The lyrics, great idea.. fantastic sonic spread (as usual) you get a very rich sound that I covet deeply, the real drums, I crave real drums, programming midi drums just doesn't cut it for me and I refuse to use loops. superb backing vocals (as usual) and the middle 8 is a tour de-force.. a very very cool song, it has all the things I like a bout a song, it's organic, it's recorded beautifully and it's catchy.. and another great test, it doesn't sound anything like 3:50 long.

Thanks for the kind words about Marion, and that's "our" forum , the damn thing was your idea..

Andy Partridge eh? ..neato..

Steve P.
your song writing is cool ,easily digested. fresh yet familiar.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

That's pretty cool Roy, I love the rubber bass.. and the guitar is (as usual) sublime. I can't get passed the synthi brass section though, to my ears the sound of it cheesies the whole track, which is a shame because the rhythm section piano and guitars are great..

You really program midi well though, excellent job.

Thanks skip and steve... steve, you're right...I'll either fix or ditch those tinty horns. I'll have those things rhyming with 'Marion' before it's over...

'Nothing Rhymes with Marion' is so fine... You songs make me smile...so original, well done, and with great subtle humor... Great job...

posterchild,
Sheesh...this is my favorite song you've done...great chorus indeed (chord changes/melody kill). This would've been a Beach Boys classic. You know, I'm curious, are you influenced by Brian Wilson's style, or does it just come out that way sometimes? (which I know is possible).
Good stuff.......

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi Roy
I would like to hear this tune done by a full orchestra, it was meant for it.

Bass part kinda is like a salsa/polka bass on the fretless, cool.

I'm not meaning to kick you when your down, but the horn section has that
midi individually wrapped american cheese feel and those where the guys that made me want it done by an orchestra.the parts are wonderful, it the sounds I'm picking on.
I thought for sure that think was going to kick into a shuffle any minute,
nope

Now ladies an gentelman we have the DUC orchestra performing world renowned songwriter guitar sensation Roy Howells composition Major Baby
in Bflat.

Has a nice ring to it

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

archtop...
Man, I know those little trumpets reek of cheese right now. It's definitely not done, so I probably shouldn't have posted it yet. The horns were meant to give it a military flavor, but I may chuck that notion and just keep it all cool...we'll see.
But you're right, some real horns could make it work if they stay in the song.
thanks for the feedback.... -Roy

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Kev/graveleye,
Man, 'Moving Again' is a really good song. Vocals are done well, and the guitars working with the keyboard 'aura' thing are cool. Sheesh, pull out some more of these songs...I'de love to hear em.
thanks for the listen... -Roy

Bollocks, I thought I was the only person on this board who would think of Andy Partridge/EARLY XTC for that tune. How much did you pay Barry Andrews to sit in on keys??????????

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Here are some PTools rough mixes from last year. These are my early demos. I am mixing for my first album right now. I hope these compositions are radically different to your ears. There are just a few bass tracks in there. And, I DO NOT TRACK ELECTRIC GUITARS EVER. They interfere with my bass harmonies.

I wonder what Steve Lillywhite, Daniel Lanois, Hugh Padgham could do if they remixed these?

Cheers,

Jay
