Re: overnightlows new song
Joz,
I like it. Is that an oblique Money Pit reference in there? Engaging vocals - your singer has audible charm. |

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
I can respect that. My buddy is a die hard Bonzo fan and that thought of sample pisses him off! Unfortunately I ony have an Mbox so to inputs really screws my plans of micing a set properly. If you dont mind , how did you mic them? I dont suppose you journaled your recording sessions with photos?
BTW- Your Site is pretty cool and the chick is hot. You guys need a little bio text for each member. I almost emailed the chick when I was hoping for more pics. Yeah im a normal guy ..he he |

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
yeah i know what your saying... thanks for checking out the site -it needs some work. i didnt get many pictures from the session, i did get 1 or 2. he's a pretty hard hitting drummer so i used dynamic mics on most of the drums, i used a sennheiser 602 on the kick, sm57 on the snare top, crown pzm 30 for the snare bottom, sennheiser 421's on the 2 floor toms and sennheiser 604's on the 2 rack toms. I used Shure ksm 137's for overheads. i also had 2 studio projects b3's in the room. it's a lot of stuff but we were pretty happy with the results.
-I hope this helps. i have to go back a few pages and see what you posted to check it out (assuming that you have posted some mixes?) |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
I'm totally blown away and humbled by the talent on this board.
I listened to Remain and what a great song. Guitar sound needs love and some professional mastering would help, but well written and the singer is world class. Jealous. I'm almost finished with my first song and will post it here when I am, but the grammys are clearly not in my future. |

Jack Rabbit, I enjoyed the hell out of that... ...the unexpected 'turn' in mood took me by surprise, in a good way. Nice job. Banjo sounds great, by the way...is that you? -Roy |
Re: Echo Lake
All,
This is a rough, rough, one take, one mic (Apex 460) pre-producing thing that I am starting with a new client. She is pretty damn cool too. Great guitar. Her vocals were rough at the beginning, but she got warmed up as she went. We are plannig on doing 4 songs, very simple acoustic stuff. Going to be kinda relaxed and mellow.... just what I need. Jen M. - pre-pro rough Enjoy, nice to be behind the board tonight... - Doc |
Re: Echo Lake
Nice recording job, Chris...you're right, after a rough start on the vocal, she did warm up, which means she's got a good one in her...heartfelt performance though. The acoustic sounds good, though I'm hearing her pick tap the body now and then...you might mention that to her before proceeding...great job on your part, IMO.

Re: Echo Lake
Roy,
Ya I hear it too... Along with the interference at the beginning that has started to come into my system. Sometimes I pick up a radio station when using some of the mic's. Not sure what that is all about? Anyways, she was actually surprised as I just threw the mic up real quick to hear what she had. It was nothing that we are keeping. Just thought that it was cool and a good thing to hear for the start of the project. I am certain that when she is warmed up it will be great. Thanks Roy, - Doc |

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
This is my first mix of alternative pop music. Done a while back....I know there are a lot of flaws so I would love some feedback. I dont really like the drums or bottom end!!!

I wish I could get a vocal sound like that. Right in your face, full, and beautiful. Alternative pop is a good description, but it needs to decide which it wants to be. The lyrics are good generic pop, but the music has an indie feel to it. Don't really seem to go together. Then again, I'm just a beginner hoping to learn, and this is better than I have done so far. |
Doc\'s new tunes
All,
Well tonight I tracked my old client Tom Rothman. He and I have been working on a 12 song album, and he wanted to put a few live feel tracks on. Tonight I put 3 mics on him and let him have at it. Worked out pretty sweet and he was happy. A little different approach this time. Mic setup was a 3 mic configuration. APEX 460 - Vintech X73i - 1176 - Apogee - Main Vocal mic right above his head. APEX 435 - API 3124 - Apogee - Right at the 12th fret APEX 435 - API 3124 - Apogee - Right behind the sound hole Really just got some good levels on the API and did not add compression at all to it. Just reverb with the Lexicon PCM-90 and a custom preset. Took the APEX and added the verb and a slight detune from the EVENTIDE H-3000 but honestly it is so subtle you can only hear it in the phones for the most part. No biggy. Added the LinMB on the Master Fader and L2 and some others to get the levels up. Really liked how these turned out. He tried to give it a more "free" feel to add to a live track idea. The funy part is that we tracked this in the sound room as the drums are setup and I did not feel like taking them down. HE was happy..... Here ya go: Guess you can say this is a TRUE APEX test... FINE - Tom Rothman COMFORTABLE - Tom Rothman Enjoy.... Doc |
Re: Doc\'s new tunes
Doc: New Rothman ones sound cool man! I have been doing a lot more setting up of three mics with acoustic stuff lately for that live feel also. I even set up 6 mics all around me with two at head level front and back about 3 ft out and one in front of the acoustic pointed at the bridge, two on the sides of me about 3 ft out, and one behind me about 3 ft back and it sounded really cool with everything panned accordingly and in a stereo track. talk about surround sound.. hehe Can't wait to hear more from the record though man, you guys have some great stuff going on there! Talk to you later man. peace

Re: Solo CD.....
Hey everyone. I just posted up some samples. I am working with a drummer in Montreal, (I am in Manitoba) and things are going great. We transfer everything over the net. Gotta love technology.
He tracks all the drums in Logic on that mac and then sends me the tracks as wavs, I then import into PTLE at my end and mix in PT. Here are some samples would love fo you to check out: New Drums Samples Enjoy, I know I am. |
Re: Solo CD.....
Nice refreshing tunes (tones)
Took me a minute to get my head back to normal after the intro panning on Disillusion though Nice work |
Re: Solo CD.....
Congrats on the drums Scott! sounds like you guys are having a blast with it there. Did you record everything plugged in with an acoustic/electric for the guitars? Was just curious caus it sounds like it is missing a bit of room reverb to it if it was a normal acoustic for some reason. The playing sounds good though. Goodluck on the new record! peace

"Nice refreshing tunes (tones)

Was just curious caus it sounds like it is missing a bit of room reverb to it if it was a normal acoustic for some reason. The playing sounds good though. Goodluck on the new record! peace Thanks, SP79, you are correct. Unfortunately, I don't have any real gear to record the abience and get good results. The drums have brought so much to the mix and the tunes though. The drummer I am working with is really good and having alot of fun, as you can tell . I am still not done, as I get new tracks from the drummer, I am remixing and re-tracking guitars (as needed). I might see bout renting some gear, (great pre's and mics) and re track some of the acoutics tracks to bring even more to the mix. Thanks alot for listening. Scott |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Well, here's my first attempt. I wrote it as a song to promote the Free State Project (www.freestateproject.org).
No keyboards or midi or software sounds. Played all the guitars and did the vocals myself. The drums are from a cool shareware program called Doggie Box. Project: Free State |
Re: Doc\'s new tunes
Both tracks sound good, Chris...nice job. Post more.

A first post
Howdy,
That's The Way Of The World I just got done recapping and retubing a 64 Fender Bassman with 4-10" speakers, and picked this song to record with the amp, since covers are easier than originals (so I thought). It's EWF's That' The Way Of The World. I was hindered (or helped) by not having the original for reference. It's a LONG song, so I really had to stretch my three party tricks. I've also got about 8 months on PT now, and finally learned the diff between edit and mix windows. And who knew there were TWO windows?? EWF is a fanastic organization, and I learned a ton from this tune, both chords and structure. The KB, strings and bass are computer, drums are Mark dba www.slimvolume.com . Lead guitar is a LP with burstbuckers, R121 into STT1 with tube and Xformer engaged. I think this amp chassis will ultimately be coupled to 12"s for fuller chording, but the 10"s do a good lead tone, but seem a little nasal. Angus meets Maurice over in the produce section... |
Re: A first post
Greg...really enjoyed that...nice guitar sounds, and some tasteful playing...good mix as well. Good job...

Re:

Hello...
Hi, everyone. I don't post much, but, I'm posting now.
Anyway, here's a couple of songs I've recorded lately. They're rough mixes, and will sound a lot better when I have the band playing them instead of just me overdubbing myself on everything. But, enjoy! Stargazer - drums were Pearl Export series recorded with an SM-57 on the kick and one SM-58 overhead. Guitars are a Peavey Falcon strat-copy into an Epiphone Galaxie 10 (neat little all-tube combo) mic'd with an SM-57. Bass was a Warwick Corvette Standard 5-string direct through a SansAmp BassDriver DI with the tone circuitry OFF. Vocals were through an SM-57. Breakdown - drums were Pearl Export series with a Shure Beta 52a on the kick, and two AKG C-430 mics placed beside each of the higher toms. Everything else was done as above. I'm very pleased with the new drum mics. Let me know what y'all think! |
Re: Hello...
I'm loving 'Stargazer', Mr J. Good one.

Another New tune from Doc
All,
Finaly finished up the Tom Rothman project last night. Time to mix and get Jason (jstunner) to lay down his tracks. Going to be sending that off to him in the next few days. Good luck amigo! We finished a pretty cool tune last night and I did a quick mix without bass for all to hear. Pretty happy with this tune. Some little tweeks still to be made with some timing but that is always the case. Had a good time with the drums on this one and really put the APi to work. The submixer is about the coolest feature on that thing. Ran all 4 mics for the toms to it, mixed them in the unit, then sent them out on a stereo track to Pro Tools and saved 4 mono inputs for 1 stereo. Way cool.... HEre was the chain: Kick - - Senn 421 - X73i SubKick - Yamaha Subkick - 1272 Snare Top - 57 - X73i Snare Bottom - 57 - 1272 Overheads - Oktava 012's - Trident 80B - Distressors (3:1 - stereo strapped) hi-hat - Oktava 012 - Trident S20 Toms - Sennheiser 421's - API 3124 Vocals - Apex 460 - 1272 - 1176 Guitars: TLM-103 - X73i - 1176 Apex 460 - X73i Apex 435 - Trident 80B Apex 435 - Trident 80B Hope you enjoy it... should be nice when the bass fills in its parts. Tom Rothman - Original Sin Should be a sweet CD when all done... I hope... Enjoy, - Doc |

and after listened to this one... I also downloaded the previous songs you posted... as I understand from your "chains"... orinal sin was "better" recorded... but... I like the sound of the other songs much better than original sin (though that`s far the best song). the other songs seems more "fresh".. and (my opinion) the drums on "original sin" are far too busy... leave the singer some more space!!! could be a great great song... but I would work some more at the arrangements... I mean, with such a song, and such a voice, it`s worth the efford!!! but as you said, it`s not all done... so what are you planning to do more on that song??? grtz, nico |
