very cool song, some crazy drum (programming?) stuff in there. i like the contour of the guitars on it. theres one thing i would recommend though, the hi-hat(tsssh)hits on count 1 really stick out, maybe you could add more hats, change the volume, or sample. other than that, you rock!! have you heard of Jeff Scheetz? you remind me of him alot, great guitars! -e |

That's interesting about the high-hat. It's the same sample as all others. Maybe turning it down will do the trick. It IS a drum machine, btw. Did I go overboard with drum programming? It is a tendency of mine Have heard the name of Sheetz but not the playing. Will look into him. Thanks, FF |

Wow, this is great! In the past I've only ever visited the DUC when I had a problem but tonight I was bored and had some time to spare so I checked out this thread and I think I'll be back.
Anyway I've listened to a number of things and I'm pretty impressed with most of it. But Roy, I had to single you out, bro. I'm listening to Goblin's Moon right now and I'm just smiling. Wow. (BTW, the link to this from your site gave me some wierd page that said something about informing you about a broken link.) And when the guitar came in on Deep Scarlett I suddenly remembered why I love Jeff Beck. Then I kept listening and eventually forgot about Jeff Beck. I'll be making my own Roy Howell CD soon. Great stuff from badperson and editor as well (I may start covering Wishing Well at some of my acoustic shows if you don't mind, eman). Looking forward to hearing more music on here. Some of my latest stuff is on my website. Right now only one tune is full-length, the rest are excerpts because I'm planning on attempting some commerce acquisition in the near future but I may try to find a way to make full-lengths of all my tunes available on the web for DUC'ers. Everything is recorded through my Mobo. Drum sounds come out of a Roland JV-1010. Guitar sounds come out of a PODxt. Guitar is a Carvin DC-something or other. Acoustic is a Garrison. Bass is a Pedulla 5-string fretless (not mine, wish it was). Congas are LP Aspire. Those get recorded with a pair of 57's. Vox are recorded with an Audio-Technica AT3525 (clean response, nothin' fancy). AcGtr gets recorded w/ A-T near bridge and an AKG C-1000 on the neck. Mixes are rendered by my buddy Danny Jacobs who happens to be a talented sound engineer with a pair of Mackie studio monitors. Well I think this has gone on long enough. The choir sounds very nice as well. "your love" is a very cool song, nice vibe. I found my self wanting to hear more definition on the drums, but that's coming from someone who's never recorded a drumset in his life. hylse, I liked your groove a lot, what tools did you use? xsb bloody nose has a great groove, great playing. I thought the organ sound on "drowning eyes" was very cool, as were the vox. Fingerflicker, cool song and good production. The only thing that stood out to me was that the hihat stuck out for some reason. I'm not sure why. The drum programming is great, though. Sure, I use an Alesis SR-16 (I think that's the number). It has these "fill" options, which I don't really use as they were intended. I just use them as regular drum patterns. Here's the short version (explanation below): 1. Program main kick/snare combo into machine, stopping before drum fill 2. If fill has kick/snares, add those 3. Add tom fill 4. Add cymbal crash before fill (and possible after, though may have to wait until recording) 5. Add high-hat except during fill I basically figure out what 8 beat pattern (2 measures) I want to create, and if it has a drum fill (like toms/bass/snare combo), I figure out where the "main" beat ends and the "fill" starts. Then I program the "main" kick/snare combo into the machine, stopping before the fill. You have to figure out what the last note of the main part really is, and memorize both that and the drum fill you worked out in your head (and on the machine slowly). If the fill has snare or kick, I sometimes add those into the machine before doing the rest of the fill (toms), because if I miss the toms, I can just delete the toms. If I miss a snare in the fill, it's harder to erase just that snare (I either have to erase all snares and re-perform the main ones too, or go into the machine editor thing, look for the note, and erase it). For fills, I stop the machine, practice the drum fill a few times, then hit record again. When the machine loops, I wait until the main part passes and then perform the fill into it. If I miss, I usually delete each tom. It's easier to perform all the toms in one pass, even if I miss one, than to stick one in in the middle of others. I could add stuff in the editor, but I hate the editor. After all this, I add the highhat or ride cymbal. Also, drummers usually can't strike a high-hat when performing a drum fill, so I omit the high-hats when fills are happening. To cover the absense of the bright sound, I almost always add a cymbal crash before the drum fill. Fills often end with a crash, too. Those crashes are the only ones I add to the machine. The rest I manually record later after the drums have gone to "tape". The reason is that crashes are so obvious, and if I want to use a pattern twice, and it has a big crash in it, I can't really use the pattern somewhere else. It's too obviously a repeated pattern. Well, now that I think about it, with PT, I could just mute the crash if I don't want it later. Hmmm. Doing crashes manually adds a least some human touch. My great fear as a drum programmer is that someone will realize my drums are a machine, not from the sound, but because there's no imagination and things return too predictably. When it comes to recording, I put every sound on its own track (takes 8-10). Each tom is alone, and cymbals go to a stereo track. Believe it or not, due to tendinitis in both arms, I actually do all the drum programming (except toms) with both feet. I rigged a book with 5 letter openers and tape, and when I step on the letter openers, they push down the corresponding drum pad. I've been meaning to make a video of me doing this for my site, since people don't believe me You're the second to notice the high-hat. Do you think turning it down would help? It's a stock sound from the Alesis. Is it the tone itself? I wonder if EQ would help it. I don't really hear the result you guys mean (probably too used to it). Sometimes a cymbal hits at the same time as a high-hat. You're NOT talking about that, right? |

What's the easiest (I know that's subjective) way to replace drum sounds? I may know how to program the drum machine, but I know little else of usign drum sounds that aren't in the machine....

You could get sound replacer, but if your drums are one stereo file you will run into some problems. If each track has its own sound assigned to it, soundreplacer can go in there and put a different sample in there. Its about $350 dollars I think, but its well worth it, theres also a demo I'd suggest trying, on the digidesign download page.
I think the drums sound pretty good, however the hi-hat that i mentioned in my first post has the repetition on the first beat that really sticks out, i think if you used a more "closed hat" sample it might sit easier in the mix. -ev |

If you recorded the MIDI out of your electronic drumkit, you could probably get any soundbank that follows the General MIDI format for the percussion. That lets SampleTank out, unless you're willing to move/transpose the individual notes by hand.
What you -might- want to do is get the VST-to-RTAS converter, get the soundfont VSTi player and then go download the Natural Studio Kit soundfont ....great acoustic kit....I'm pretty sure it's laid out in the GM MIDI format. |

Nice guitar tone. I especially liked the sweep-picking parts on "... Test 2" (if that's what they were?). I'm still a beginner and I do mostly folk-pop (is that actually a genre?), but I make the foray into blues more often than some. Hey folks... I lurk in here all the time but never really get a chance to post much, but as usual I am really impressed at what i am hearing
Here is my wife, Mrs Graveleye , in her debut song. We worked pretty hard on the recording, and its not really done yet, but we're going to rest it for a while before trying to get it perfect -we're getting kind of tired of it, time to move on. So I wanted to just slide it by you guys because I liked the song, and cuz its my wife and I am proud of her. Overboard BTW, I hate mp3s... I thought a few minutes ago that I should have cut this at 256 rather than 128 because i can tell the difference. It sounded ok on the crappy computer monitors, but listening to it here through my studio monitors it just sounds so different than the cd. But its too late now - I will try to get a better copy up later when I have time for the hell of it. What software are you guys using to cut mp3s? I have cdex, wondering if there is something better. |

graveleye, I sent you an email. To paraphrase, I think "overboard" is great. I love that overdriven reggae vibe. Another poster said the vox could come up, and I don't disagree, but there's a vibe to that balance, where the vox are on the verge of being overwhelmed by the music that can be used to your advantage. I don't know what I'd do exactly, just thinking out loud. Hmmm....
Anyway, "baby's got a niche" was also a good tune. It really captures the old blues sound, has a very lo-fi vibe to it. Strictly my 2 cents, I didn't think that reverb thing towards the end helped the song, I thought the song was strong enough and it was disorienting. Again, just my subjective opinion, ymmmv. Hey thanks guys. I am still going to post a better mp3 of that because for some reason the sound changed pretty drastically when I converted it to mp3, even listening to it on my studio monitors. On disc it sounds pretty decent on almost everything I have played it on even in its unfinished state. Oh well.. another reason to not like mp3s.
I rather wanted to bring the vocals up a bit too, but Shannon vetoed it. lol.. she da prodoosah ! Seriously, her vocals are a challenge to record. Yup Roy, thats my crappy guitarin!! i suck, my amp sucks, but i try hard About halfway through the recording I remembered I have Amplitube... erk .. too late and I was too lazy to rerecord them. Maybe later. She played bass too... a fretless even. |

The minimalist thing isn't really intentional, I just add parts until I like it, and a lot of times it ends up being a bit sparse. Probably also has something to do with being a solo man-and-his-acoustic performer. I'll post more as I feel they are "ready for mass consumption." Which of course as all artists know, they hardly ever are, but you at least gotta get close. Btw, graveleye, I heard some Cranberries meets PJ Harvey in there... nice! I do agree with the consensus though, the vocals need more presence in the mix. Ah well, the producer rules all. |

I just finished some violin work with a poet named Stefano Resta. I didn't record it myself, but I played on several of the 9 tracks recorded at the View Studios in Belmont, CA. I'll post as soon as I have the CD(at some point tomorrow).

I enjoyed 'Weekend Warrior'...good job overall. I just read about your drum programming questions and some of the answers. I used to have an SR16 too, and liked some of the sounds (though my favorite snare had verb built in...couldn't be edited it out...know the one I mean?). I know it can be confusing between samplers, Soundreplacer, the sounds themselves...but here's my suggestion as a simple option to try (using the midi route, which I recommend). If Reason(my first choice) is not an option right now, I would use the Sampletank free drums. You said you could get midi from the SR16 into PT. If you can see the midi notes you played in the PT Edit Window, you can assign them to the drums in Sampletank. If you decide to try this, I would get Sampletank set up first, and then post back with any questions on assigning sounds. I don't want to expound too much unless you decide to go this route.
