Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Here is my newest creation - BLACK HOLE.

Recording Notes -

Rhythm gtrs. for a while I was touting how cool it was to record 4 rhythms - 2 on each side. Now I just have 2 rhythms but when I recorded I double miced the speaker 2 57s on almost dead center and one right at the speaker edge.

Solos and the wierd gtr behind the chorus were done with the Pod.

The lead vocal has Antares Mic Mod on it.

The gtr in the breakdown after the bridge has GRM bandpass and then Metaflanger plug-in
The vocal there also uses GRM bandpass - this is absolutely the plugin for the am radio sound and you can download it free at GRM's site. BTW - the GRM plugins are awesome production tools that don't sound like anything else - I always use the doppler, delay and band pass plugs. Has anyone tried their ST plugins yet, they look super cool!

This song has the best cymbal sound I've gotten I think - I used the Channelstrip plug to comp and eq.

BLACK HOLE

Man, what a guitar! I'd love to know what is pushing the gtr during the solo...when it seems to ascend at the leading edge of the note or phrase...I've only heard this sound (tone as well as the fx) from one other person and that was Phil Keaggy ( http://www.philkeaggy.com/ ) How do you get that sound? Killer!!!

Not sure what exactly you're referring to here, I do hear a lot of volume swells (Phil uses the volume knob on the guitar itself to do this) and bends/pre-bends (or slides, as the case may be)

As for how to do the volume swells... helps to have a volume knob that your pinky can reach. I think Phil had to switch his tone and volume pots on a couple of his guitars to be able to do this. You basically use the inside edge of your pinky to roll the vol knob... you have it rolled down to as quiet or off as you want it... just after you pluck your note you roll the volume knob up to full volume to taste. It's a bit tricky to get goin at first, but a neat trick once you get good at it. Phil is a master at it and uses it to great effect. You can also do this with a volume pedal...but, at least in my experience, it was easier just to use my pinky to emulate Phil's use of this effect. Phil isn't the only one who has done this sort of technique...but he does use it in quite a unique style that's easily recognizable by Phil "phans". =)

msog,
Thanks very much... For the solo, I used 2 separate EQ's...one thin and the other full presence (a DaBasstard trick he's used on drums). It gives a swelling effect, but it's not volume. I rarely use 'volume swells' myself. I think there are just 2 single notes in 'Blue Flame Cruiser' that are vol/swell, and they're not in the solo. One of the sounds I use is a combination of delay and flange, and may give the illusion of a volume swell.
Again, thanks for your comments...

This is a song called 'I Gotta Change' by cinemafixer (Matt Zeiner), done last year. He plays organ and does the killer vocal. I played the slide guitar on it.

I Gotta Change

Roy,
Dude I really like that style. You guys sound like your from down here like New Orleans or something. I'm no real good judge of mixes since I'm such a newbie, but I really like it. It fit the style well. Peace out man.

StevieRaveOn/ Matthew,
Thanks, man...that whole thing is Matt Zeiner's. As I mentioned, I just played slide on it. At the time, he was the lead singer/organist for The Dickey Betts Band, though I don't think he's with them anymore. I saw them here in Memphis last year, and they were great.
thanks, Roy

Your welcome man. Again, I really like the vibe... I can't wait till I get some of my solo stuff done, I'd really like to get your opinions on mixes like that. Peace out.

Stevie,

Nope, sorry the band's got no site. The album should be completely done within a week or so.
