All,
I have posted this a few months back, but the artist decided that he wanted to re-record the drums. Wanted it a bit faster. I am happy with it, for the most part. One measure gets off, but it is the guitars that are going nuts. These guys have some issues with the click. Anyways, I wanted to get your opinions of the overall sound. This has the L2 and EQ on the master, but when we go take it to have it professionally mastered it will be empty. Let me know what you think of the overall mix.

Original drums if interested:

Note: He wanted the guitars more dominant than anything else.....

JUST WANT TO GET THIS CD DONE!!!!!!

Here a new breakbeat track – Break. The track started out as a pure percussion track but after time I couldn’t help but ass some other elements.

Thanks!

I too like the original drums better. The artist seems to think that this song is FAST for some reason. Stubborn actually if you ask me... But hey! Gotta do what the customer wants right. I amy try to convince him.....

Tired, so tired! Want to move on!

Thanks though! SMART MINDS THINK ALIKE!

Ok, I've been out of commission for a while but I'm back with my newest creation BLACK HOLE.
Here's the interesting recording stats -
Rhythm gtrs. for a while I was touting how cool it was to record 4 rhythms - 2 on each side. Now I just have 2 rhythms but when I recorded I double miced the speaker 2 57s on almost dead center and one right at the speaker edge.
Solos and the wierd gtr behind the chorus were done with the Pod.
The lead vocal has Antares Mic Mod on it.
The gtr in the breakdown after the bridge has GRM bandpass and then Metaflanger plug-in
The vocal there also uses GRM bandpass - this is absolutely the plugin for the am radio sound and you can download it free at GRM's site.

Okay guys,

Here's another from an album that I've been working on for quite some time. This one is dear to me, so any advice and criticism is definitely welcome...anything to make it the best it can be!

Personally, I love the way the bass was played, but the tone is driving me nuts! I haven't listened to it for about a month, and that's the first thing that jumped out at me today.

So, without further ado: Out of Here

I really dig that tune. Does the band have a web site?

This is a song called 'I Gotta Change' by cinemafixer (Matt Zeiner), done last year. He plays organ and does the killer vocal. I played the slide guitar on it.

Dude I really like that style. You guys sound like your from down here like New Orleans or something. I'm no real good judge of mixes since I'm such a newbie, but I really like it. It fit the style well. Peace out man.

Man, what a guitar! I'd love to know what is pushing the gtr during the solo...when it seems to ascend at the leading edge of the note or phrase...I've only heard this sound (tone as well as the fx) from one other person and that was Phil Keaggy ( http://www.philkeaggy.com/ ) How do you get that sound? Killer!!!

BTW - the GRM plugins are awesome production tools that don't sound like anything else - I always use the doppler, delay and band pass plugs. Has anyone tried their ST plugins yet, they look super cool!

This song has the best cymbal sound I've gotten I think - I used the Channelstrip plug to comp and eq.

Not sure what exactly you're referring to here, I do hear a lot of volume swells (Phil uses the volume knob on the guitar itself to do this) and bends/pre-bends (or slides, as the case may be)

As for how to do the volume swells... helps to have a volume knob that your pinky can reach. I think Phil had to switch his tone and volume pots on a couple of his guitars to be able to do this. You basically use the inside edge of your pinky to roll the vol knob... you have it rolled down to as quiet or off as you want it... just after you pluck your note you roll the volume knob up to full volume to taste. It's a bit tricky to get goin at first, but a neat trick once you get good at it. Phil is a master at it and uses it to great effect. You can also do this with a volume pedal...but, at least in my experience, it was easier just to use my pinky to emulate Phil's use of this effect. Phil isn't the only one who has done this sort of technique...but he does use it in quite a unique style that's easily recognizable by Phil "phans". =)

msog,
Thanks very much... For the solo, I used 2 separate EQ's...one thin and the other full presence (a DaBasstard trick he's used on drums). It gives a swelling effect, but it's not volume. I rarely use 'volume swells' myself. I think there are just 2 single notes in 'Blue Flame Cruiser' that are vol/swell, and they're not in the solo. One of the sounds I use is a combination of delay and flange, and may give the illusion of a volume swell.
Again, thanks for your comments...
~Roy

StevieRaveOn/ Matthew,
Thanks, man...that whole thing is Matt Zeiner's. As I mentioned, I just played slide on it. At the time, he was the lead singer/organist for The Dickey Betts Band, though I don't think he's with them anymore. I saw them here in Memphis last year, and they were great.
thanks, Roy

Thanks a ton Roy, I'm glad you liked the tunes. Those rough mixes will hopefully be further accentuated by a new bass, a 7 string fretless created by BassLab (www.basslab.de), that should arrive in a month.

And now for something completely different, well, almost. ---

my latest...

I think I might need to remix it, it's a little muddy. A lot of parts. Also, I think the vox are too loud. The bass sound is really muddy, which is the main problem i was addressing in the thread I posted a couple weeks ago asking if the sansamp bass di was good. My presonus "toob" pre actually doesn't sound bad if there aren't too many other instruments in the mix, but in a mix like this with a bunch of parts it sounds like [expletive]. Ideas?

Mr 7,

Either you have much better gear than me or I've been sorely wasting my time the last year. (just kidding)

this is a great sounding recording, you get a great range, everything really seems to have it's own comfortable spot in the mix, unlike my mixes which resemble 11 infants at kitchen table with full bowls of oatmeal with no supervision.....

Oh well, seriously, though, that's GREAT sounding work.

Roy, "I Gotta Change" wasn't recorded all on an 001 was it? A truly fantastic, pro sound.

"blue flame" has that nice crisp production I've heard on your other stuff.

Later,

bp

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

badperson,
I really like your vocal style and laid back approach. I would probably have mixed the drums up slightly more and the solo back some, but it's not really important if the overall song sounds good, and it does. Your unique signature vocals should be the focal point of your songs, I think, and you do a great job with that. Good song...

Roy & Badperson, thanks for the comments. It's just practice, that's all. The guitar modeling is from this new little zoom 4-track recorder I bought to play with, and I like some of the tones. I just wish there was one called "Roy's Special" that would really kick arsss. I do love that cool trademark sound you've got there, Roy!. Peace. Out

okay, here's an old one that I think I actually posted under an alias because I was self-conscious about my singing. Now that I've broken that ice, I'll subject...er, favor you with an older effort.

The lyrics are pretty deep, so a lot of it will probably go over your heads, but try not to let that bum you out.( lol!!!)

oh well, I think it has a cool groove....
