Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Hey LW, sounds good man! That singer definitely has that "Disney" sound, experienced but youthful sounding. What vocal mic & preamp did you use on her? Sounds great - maybe just a touch too much reverb on the voice for my taste, but it blends with the other tracks so it's nothing major.

Your arrangement is great too, and I can tell you did a lot of automation to liven it up. I noticed in the 001 thread that you said you had a PII that you use for internet access... have you considered turning that into a gigastudio workstation? Although your samples don't sound bad, especially with all the work you put into them, the gigastudio stuff would easily take it to the next level. the Sonic Implants strings collection is really amazing. I'm working with someone on a direct-to-video Disney flick right now, and they've been blown away by the mockups we're giving them using those samples, looks like we're gonna save some money on the budget by recording a smaller ensemble when it comes to tracking time!

Oh, and here's my addition to the thread. 7 Instrumental tracks I recently put together for demo purposes. All were done using an Mbox with a combination of Logic Pro 6 and PT (written in Logic, mixed and edited in PT).

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Thanks, man.

I actually agree with you on the reverb. The mix prior to this had the vocal 1.5db louder and the reverb down a bit more. The singer specifically asked for more reverb and that she wanted to blend with the orchestra more, so I made those changes. Lauren is a great singer who does a lot of stage musicals. She's only about 21-22 but doesn't sound immature at all. I've done four tunes with her now.

The mic is a Neumann TLM103; the preamp is a Studio Technologies Mic Pre-Eminence heavily modified by Audio Upgrades to achieve a sound very similar to a Millenia Media HV3 (very clean and uncolored). I did use an RNC in "supernice" mode going in (4-6db of comp) and a Renaissance Comp on the vocal track. Very little EQ was used on her voice, a HPF at around 90hz, 1.5db down at a broad 375hz and a little 1.5db boost around 4k.

Ohhhh, but I had to WORK to get those samples to sound decent. I had to eq the heck out of some of them. I think the best samples were the French Horns from the Emu library. The pizzicato strings (except for the bass and cello pizz) were from my JV-80 Orchestra ROM of all things.

Believe me, I've gone back and forth on the Giga question. I don't think I'd get too many voices out of a pokey PII 333Mhz machine. I'm hoping Santa will be good to me this year and give me that brand new dual G5. That should solve a lot of performance problems - and create a lot of upgrade and authorization problems for all my plugins as well. If I'm going to go Giga, I'll get a maxed out Carillon (pre-configured music PC) or something.

I haven't heard the Sonic Implants samples, I'll check them out; I've heard the Vienna Symphony stuff and the Garritan stuff, though. The Garritan Personal Orchestra would probably be my next jump - it's affordable. The demos on the Garritan site are pretty amazing.

That's a gorgeous Piano on your song Reflection! Bosendorfer sample? Is the cello (or low viola) part of the Sonic Implant lib? Very nice, too! I really liked this tune.

I'll have to put some of my scoring clips up for review here...I've got some great chase music and tension music <g>.

The piano is the standard Gigapiano sample if I remember correctly, it's been a while since I did that tune. I didn't have access to the Sonic implants then, so the strings in that tune are a combo of the Merislov strings and the solo cello is from the Vienna collection. I'm actually not a big fan of the Vienna strings, but the woodwinds are some of the best out there. I've been thinking about replacing the solo cello with a different instrument actually, the fake-ness of the repeated attack on every note drives me crazy, but that song was a quicky one-night project just to try out the string samples, so I'm not too motivated to pull it back up again.

I can't believe you had 4-6db of comp on that vocal, I don't hear it at all. Sounds very clean and dynamic, and the mic seems to have been a perfect match for her voice, I'll have to check it out next time I'm recording a female singer.

best,

Kevin

Just put out a whole album (titled Peep) where all the mixes on the album are PT LE (32 track on OS 9) in-the-box mixes.

3 songs are up here:

Note that these tracks have been mastered professionally.

Re: todays project: Sharing the Gifts

I just wanted to give everyone an update to the 'best of the Duc' disc. I've removed any "deadline" for now and submissions are still being accepted. My webpage for the project (a link is in my sig) should be up to date. If I've forgotten anyone who has submitted, please inform me. If for some reason you can't get in touch with me through e-mail (darn spam-blockers) try my phone number available on my webpage (also in my sig).

I've decided that I'll make it's very own thread once I've gotten 2 more submissions. Feel free to take a look at the page and listen to some of the music. We've got a great variety of genres represented and I think it's going to be a hugely successful project.

Thanks,
Chris

This is a mix of a song I played on a few months ago for a new CD by Angelo Jensen...it was engineered by fellow DUCite 8mmOD(Robb Graves)...

Crazy and Fun Sessions!

'Sup fellow DUCers . . .

I'm throwing two up here for review. I co-produced, engineered, and performed on them, but I am not the artist. I did however get the artist's permission to post these (as he looks forward to any comments you guys might have). Anyway, I could talk all night about the sessions we had making these tracks. It's a lot of fun when the artist has a good image of what he wants, yet is more than willing to experiment. It was crazy fun.

WARNING: THESE SONGS CONTAIN MATERIAL THAT COULD BE CONSIDERED OFFENSIVE TO SOME. Please do not take the content seriously.

Artist: NH3 | Songs: "2x3=Death" & "SWJA:Criminal"

http://www.jenningsweb.com/nh3

BTW - though these are basically the masters, the discs have not been printed yet. Any suggestions to the mix/master are more than appreciated.

Thanks,

rockrev

mindstAt,
Sure your stuff is 'worthy'...You should enter 'baby gone' or 'Poisoning the Monk'. They're both very creative songs. I hope my 'suggestions' haven't discouraged you in any way. They're meant to be constructive, if anything.
I'm about to contribute something to Chris's list too, but haven't decided which song.

Either you lied or you're a genius!
Com'on... tell us how you do it. ... any special Pres, or external ADs (like Apogee's rosetta 200)?
