Off Topic Retrospect Backup HELP !

I backed up to DVD in 2002, and now the files are locked, and I cannot get anywhere with my current version of retrospect.

I need some of those file for a re-mix.

Does anyone know how to unlock the disk's ?

These are ProTools LE backups, forgive me posting this here, but you guys are my DAW Family.

Does anyone know if older versions (retrospect) are Not read by newer versions of Retrospect.

Where can I go for advise? Dantz in out of business...

Thanx in advance...

I am pretty sure that any new versions of Retrospect can READ from old backup sets (even tho you cant write to them).

And when you mean locked, what are you saying exactly? That they are password protected? When I load certain Retrospect catalogs, it prompts me for a password I set, then all is well. But Im not sure if you are speaking of something else all together..

Finally, I dont think they are out of business, but just under a new name/ownership? But Im not sure. Here is the updates page:
http://www.emcinsignia.com/supportup...s/#UPDATETYPE8

Give us more info though on your exact problems. You could also try " Create a new catalog from a Backup Set ". That goes through the actual backup data to recreate what is on them, versus, reading your Storage Set data. Time comsuming, but it works.

I have no experience with this, but might they just be locked because they're on unwritable removable media? What happens if you copy the archive file to a writable volume like a hard drive?

Re: Off Topic Retrospect Backup HELP !

Thank you guys for jumpin' in.

I finally called EMC/Retrospect, and the guy talked me through it.

It turns out, that My dual 2.7's DVD writer/recorder was not being seen by retrospect,
(because there was a newer version of Retrospect available)
and therefore would not read my DVD's in my New DVD burner, to allow retrospect to create another catalog.

I had lost the old catalog (my bad) and just needed to click on Tools/Create--to create another catalog, which Retro ver 6.1.1 would not do with my newer DVD unit

He led me to the "Downloads/updates" page, and I downloaded the 6.1.4 update, and Back In Biz !

I hope this knowledge helps others with newer machines...

I had tried Retrospect before, and didn't like it, found it confusing. I bought a program called Data Backup that I like a lot. The cool thing is that it produces Finder readable backups.

Sorry if this is useless info to you, but I think it is worth looking around at backup programs and shelling out a few bucks for one.

Paul...Thanx for the word. Can you offer anymore info on the SW you reccomend?

I am also sick to Death of Retrospect Express. It does NOT read the files like it should.

Like some other companies, they just want you to purchase the full version (ahmmm).

Please tell me more about DATA Backup ???

Re: Off Topic Retrospect Backup HELP !

It is made by a company called Prosoft and I think cost $60. I have one recording FW drive and two backups. It is easy to set up back-up options that you then pick from a pop-up menu on the main window. You set up these back-up plans by dragging and dropping in an easy set-up window.

I'm not explaining it very well, but I'm not too technically oriented and it was easy enough for me. One of the best things is that on the back-up drive, the info looks just like it does on the main drive. It is not some kind of Data Backup file, it just looks and acts as if you backed up manually using drag and drop.
