Hi Patricia,

Please give us a few more details about your situation.

If you are taking classes, ask your instructor for advise on this.

The link to the book you posted would be a good place to start IMHO.

Learning the basics of any version of Pro Tools will get you most the way, and that book is for PT 10 so not too far behind. Later versions mainly add more features so once you understand the basics, applying them to any version will work.

You may want to have a look at this website offering online courses https://www.lynda.com/Pro-Tools-trai...als/290-0.html

Remember too, you tube is a good source for info as well.

You are taking *what* Avid training class from what training provider?

You linked to the old Pro Tools 10 version of this book. No reason to buy that.

A book may be included with your training. Contact the training provider.

If you already have the PT10 book, use it. If you don't, Darryl is right don't get it go straight to 12.

Using the PT10 book will still give you a solid basic understanding of Pro Tools. Whilst the differences between the two versions is noticeable, they are not worlds apart.

My opinion only of course.

A one-day production course in Pro Tools 12 and you do not have a book? Hmm. It is good to be a quick study.

You might consider downloading the 1,267 page Pro Tools 12 Reference Guide. Interesting casual reading...

The Lynda.com thing is a good call, and I know that (at least here in Nashville), a public library account gets you free access to the site (Lynda). Not sure if it's the same in CHI, but it's worth a look.

I'd skip the book unless you need to have one w/ you in class, or something. The prof should be able to clear all that up.

Places like the DUC will have the answers to whatever problems you run into while on your own.

I just released a new book "Pro Tools 2020 - How it Works". It is the most visual, and with 1,160 pages, the most comprehensive book for Pro Tool
It is available as pdf, iBook, Kindle, and a 3-part printed book series on Amazon.
If you go for the pdf version, it is the least expensive option compared to other books, especially if you consider that you get the full content (including Pro Tools | Ultimate features that are clearly marked) and up to date to version 2020.11

Here is the link to the products page with many screenshots in case you are not familiar with my "Graphically Enhanced Manuals". I even make the full chapter 14 "Groups" available as a free book.
