Kernel Panic Restarts PT
 

Hey guys,

I have an ongoing issue with my main Mac Pro (modded 4.1).

With every version of Pro Tools going back to 12 it spontaneously triggers a Kernel Panic and restarts.

I actually moved away from Pro Tools as I couldn't bare to deal with it any longer however I'm trying to move back to it. It happens 2-3 times a day on a bad day... 0-1 on a good day.

Up until now I couldn't provoke it however since using SoundFlow I've found I can trigger it if I automate a string of offline stem bounces (although it is not limited to bouncing).

Any ideas?

I read that Avid released a statement saying that disabled SIP was causing this on Mac Pro 6.1's.

My SIP is in fact disabled - I'm hesitant to enable as my Mac has had some upgrades to CPU etc over the years and not I'm not tech savvy enough to know whether there's a good reason for it being disabled (i.e. 3rd party hardware).

Hi, welcome to the community.

So which OS are you using? Very critical info. PT12 is supported on Mountain Lion, Yosemite, Mavericks, El Capitan, and Sierra.

I appreciate this isn't a supported system but it's actually not related to this specific PT version - it's been the same issue from 12 up to 2021.

From memory; I actually had the same issue on Yosemite on another machine running 12.

Then, sadly, it may have something to do with your 4,1 --> 5,1 mod and/or firmware version of your computer. Anyway, contact support and send them this first and be prepared to dig them more information when needed.

Kernel panicks are most often some low level driver (kext in apple language) conflicting with your hardware. It may also be just as easy as badly seated memory module.

Thanks for this...

I think you're right - may as well wait until I upgrade computers rather than concern myself with the trouble. It's an annoyance and embarrassing during sessions but not more than the issues that other DAWs throw up as daily bugs.

It does fascinate me as this is Pro Tools specific - no other app causes this...

You could still try re-seating memory, it is easy and reasonably fast even if it would not help.

Will give it a go (will be kicking myself if years of this bother was caused by badly seated ram!).
