Muffler, nice song. What are you using for drums?

Hey guys. I apologise that I haven't been listening lately. I've got ADSL coming in 10 days and I'm waiting for that. Downloading on a 56k connection is rather painful
I'll be back listening after the 19th

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Thanks for the kind words. To answer the question on drums:

DW Set, Zildjian Cymbals, Noble and Cooley Snare

Snare - Shure 57's top and bottom
Hat - Shure 57
Kick - Shure Beta 52
Toms - Audix D-2's
Overheads - AT4041's

For processing, thank goodness for Waves. I use Audiotrack to do some basic sculpting (Mainly on the Snare, top and bottom, and the kick just gate them and EQ) then on Kick and Snare(s) use RCOMP to pull them out.

I then send it all to a sub mix. Here I use RCOMP, Trueverb and EQ to taste using the REQ.

Roy,

Thanks for listening and for the input. I think you are right about the "boom" probably being the acoustic guitar. I wish I was more skilled at engineering so I would know what to do about nuances like that that come up in my songs when I record them. I need to keep reading and learning new recording techniques so my overall "recorded" sound can improve. I'll post more songs as they come...thanks again

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi Xavier,
I am always trying to learn more engineering tricks myself, and one thing that seems to work(that I learned here) on acoustic guitar, is when EQing, to try taking away instead of adding first. If I have something that seems slightly boomy, it's likely that there's too much low end, so that's where I start.
I certainly don't mean to say anything negative about your song (of course), because it's very good. But this might just help bring out the best in it. ~Roy

xprod77 03-09-2003 10:09 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Roy! I didn't take any of your feedback negatively! Please don't think that...I took it as good constructive criticism on my recording. That's what I was looking for anyway because I really don't know much about recording and the techniques involved in getting good sound on tape...I'm just a guitar player who wants to record his songs! Although, I must say that eventually I do want to become as well versed in the recording arts as some of our fellow DUCers

Time to sit back and enjoy my Sunday...

Xavier,
Just listened to your track, and liked it a lot. Can I try and sing something over it ?
(I hear something à la Tears for Fears...)
I won't promise anything in the deadline dept. 'cause I've got a big week coming up at the studio, but I'd love to give it a shot.
I can write a melody and lyrics if you want me to, or I can just sing whatever you already have.
I might have to twist and turn things around a bit, but it could be good fun.
Are you game ?

PS : You can hear my voice on some tracks on my website (see below), under "audio".

Cheers,

Here some demo material. Remember, tis what you get when a group tries to do three songs in 4 hours. Not happy about any of it, but what the heck, take the clay and get to working with it. Slam me on it. These were all written by a Northern Virginia guitarist, Dan Fisk ([email protected]), give him a shout if you like his stuff. -g

I don't have any lyrics, I wanted to leave that up to the singer we finally got but I did have a rough idea for a melody to the chorus. Kind of ironic that we were goind to audition a singer yesterday and he flaked out, then I read your post . Soooo, how do we go about doing this anyway??? I've never done this before

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Xavier,
Have you tried "right-click/save as" on my site ?
I seems to work that way.
Anyway, what I would suggest is that I could just try something based on your mp3 (which I've already downloaded), post it or send it to you, and if you like it I can send you the vocal track(s), if you don't, just tell me. I'm beyond ego bruising.
If you like parts of it but would like something specific at some point, you can play that specific melody part on the guitar and post it, I'll download it and sing that part for you.
As I said, the fun part is that I might twist and turn your song inside out. You might get nervous at the thought... , but sometimes it's good to know how others perceive your music (what is the verse, chorus, etc...).
I'll come up with something, and you just tell me.
Deal ?

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Paul,

One word...WOW. For a "rough" take it sounds pretty amazing. You have a very powerful voice AND sing with a lot of passion...and I can definitely hear a little Tears for Fears influence . I'll tell you that my favorite part is the chorus, especially when you hold the C note when the guitars are hitting an E. Oh, and the changes to the structure are actually pretty close to what I wanted to do with the song! I was thinking of just using the solo part as the bridge and then have it lead into the end chorus...which is exactly what you did. So that's two favors I owe you now my friend. The melody I had in my head for the chorus isn't close to what you came up with at all either, which is really cool because like you said it gives you someone else's take on what they are hearing. I really appreciate that you have shown me that.

Whenever we do find a singer I hope you don't mind if we "borrow" some of your really good ideas for this song...I'm really trying hard to set something up with some good local musicians who just want to write and play good music. Ever coming down to Miami ? Paul, you have my complete gratitude...thank you for sharing your creativeness with me and the DUC!

Xavier

P.S. I expect a final cut by 0900 hours tomorrow morning...J/K

Paul Curtiz 03-10-2003 11:33 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi Xavier,
Glad you liked it, I had fun doing it !
I will do a "proper" take (without the bum notes...they're willing to bear...in the second chorus...aaaargh ! )
Feel free to use it for whatever purpose you want.

I'll be doing that by the end of the week and post separate lead vocal and backing vox tracks. In the meantime, any lyrics suggestions ?

One (constructive) little thing, there are quite a few moment in the song where guitars, drums and bass aren't hitting the beat together, and it makes for a bit of sloppiness. You could probably fix some of that in PT, I think your song would hugely gain from it.

I'll get back to you by the week-end.

Cheers

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi Xavier,
I'm posting a first rough try right now.
I did this very quick, pretty generic lyrics ('bout the state of the world...) and I had to do a rough mix on the phones (daughter's bed time ), so there are some notes a little out here and there...
As you might have feared, I changed the structure a little , but nothing drastic.
Anyway, it's just to give you a sense of what I'm hearing, tell me how you feel about it.
Fab chords, mate !
You'll find it here (bottom left of the page).

Man, I really like this theme. It's my favorite of all the things you've posted(I'm into instrumentals anyway). I think you're wise to 'space' those fine drums with a little verb like you've done... I don't think they need to be dry for this. The irregular timing of the piece is part of what makes it cool to me. Even the title works for me. Good job, Tim...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">WOW thanks, you almost gave me goosebumps when i read your post. I mean, you know it's a true comment when someone goes out there way to not only listen, but on top of that, comment on it. and the fact that I'm not there in front of you when you listen, which kind of puts you on the spot, even another thing that makes a true compliment.

I almost think it could be my fav also, I've listened to it so many times, I almost don't want to ruin it with vocals!!

im am right now though, ill repost when im through

Ok if anyone is still interested, I put vocals on my latest song, away.

get it here.

the lyrics are there too, cause it is a bit tough to understand, but until i get a mic that suits my voice, then my voice will just be kinda mumbly, cause otherwise i have to crank so much eq on it that it starts to sound fake.

Well, I got a demo put up for all to hear. Its called
"I wont take this anymore"

Its available at

www.mp3.com/agenda_entropy

The vocals arent finalized, but I probably wont put the finished version on MP3.com, but this demo stays pretty close to what it will end up like on CD.

Hi,

the latest mix from my cd project is called Flowers. You can find it here.

http://www.geocities.com/gernbloog/mypage.html

I put up another song on soundclick that nobody listened to, probably because they don't want to register and get a mountain of spam.

I'm getting a good mic pre in the next few weeks, I may want to re-track.

My girlfriend got in a big fight over the lyrics and we broke up. She was a pain in the a** anyway.

enjoy.

Not to get into a discussion about our possible military action, but in 1971 I heard this tune written in 1950 by Ed McCurdy, performed by Mason Proffit. For me it had a lot of meaning because of Vietnam. It provided me with inner peace that only music can. I wanted to record my own version of it. It can be found at http://ehmz.org/Gallery/songs/StrangestDream.mp3 .

Thank you,
Gene

I hope you enjoy !

you know i never thought about posting cover songs..

a friend and I did a rendention of 'don't follow' by alice in chains.

If anyone is interested, get me on
AIM: mrwilli02, it is automatically shared if you click file->get file
or
yahoo messanger: metaltim

I don't want to upload it to my site cause it is big, and my space is limited.
we ended making a little jam out of it in the middle.
My friend wes takes the first half, very bluesy, which he is awesome at,
then i take over with a little more alternative/rock style soloing.
soo it is kinda long. (about 5 minutes longer than original).

If you just wanna hear some good blues soloing, give it a shot, or if you just like the song.
it was all done in one take (the soloing), so there are few number of sour notes in there... we're no stevie ray vaughns.

Very good job, man... I was commissioned to do the Tennessee Tourism ad back...around 10 yrs. ago. All I had to go on was the slogan they had pre-chosen, and the fact that they wanted it to go through several southern-type musical styles within 60 seconds. This spot was national for years, and had an excellent video with the singers at different locations in Tennessee. They even did an 'update' version with BB King and Dolly Parton ( ) singing it. I wrote the lyrics, played guitars and bass.
I think yours is better though and would be perfect for California. Best of luck with it...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi jbartunek,
An agency here (Walker & Assoc) was commissioned by the TennTour dept. to do it. The agency called Ardent Studios here, and they called me. Ardent had not done many jingles before, and I had. I tell you, for the next few years, anytime somebody asked me what jingles I had written, I would just mention that one, and they'de go, 'Oh yeah! I've heard that...you wrote that?'... It was played here a zillion times. (why, I never understood... )
Have you tried possibly taking it direct to California Tourism? I would think they would be very impressed.

Roy,
Interesting. I made a half-ass attempt to approach the California Board of Tourism, but I think I'll make a more concerted effort. I live in Denver so it looks like I'll have a little time on my hands with this blizzard. I sat home and wrote and recorded a christian song today!! That's how bored I was. I posted it on the same site as the California song. If you have a chance to listen tell me what you think. Thanks for your advice.

ok boy and girls.
here is the song that ben and myself put together over my stay out there in california.

as i stated in the "film at 11" thread there is a curse word screamed out by my in the begining but after that its all clean and no cursing or profanity.

the song is called "Taken For Granted" it is just under 4 minutes long and any suggestions are welcome.
