Cheapest way to upgrade?

I’ve recently upgraded to an M1 Mac mini using Big Sur which means I need to upgrade Pro Tools as well. I’ve used PT 11 for years, on a perpetual license.

It seems I need to crossgrade so I can update to a version that works on my new Mac, but I personally can’t justify an annual payment of £99 just for updates and Avid plugins (never mind £200) so what would happen if I was to cancel my subscription after one year?

Would I be left with a fully functioning version of PT forever (if I remain on the same OS), I just won’t have access to future updates & plugins?

Or does it mean no access to PT at all?

Thanks in advance.

No access to PT is correct if you stop paying for the subscription. To continue using PT if your on the subscription model is to continue paying for the subscription. If you have an older PT license like PT 11 you can search around and buy an Reinstatement Plan for a few hundred bucks. That will give you the latest version plus any updates for a whole year. If you don't purchase a Renewal support plan after the year is up, you'll be frozen at the last version available before your Reinstatement plan lapsed.

Just to be clear; subscripition means - if you need to use PT, you pay for a month or a year. If the subscription expires, PT no worky. Pay for another month if you want to use PT.

Perpetual license, like I have, means I can use PT forever, but no version after 2020.12.1, because I let my support/update plan expire in december. I'll have to cash out if I were to get a newer version. Or go subscription.

Two important points:
If you have a perpetual license, it will disappear the minute you get a subscription.
And a perpetual license gives you license to run older versions of PT, subscription won't.
