I know, i know...it's been quite some time since I jumped up on this thread...but it's that time again. I promise to take an hour or so tonight to lend an ear to the endless stream of great music posted here. And while I'm doing that, could you guys/gals (are there any left now that nikki's forum is speeding up?) give me an A/B test on this tune. I tracked this friday afternoon and spent a couple hours getting familiar with the mixing for the entire album, but this tune is by far my favorite. I've been going back and forth between two alternate approaches/techniques in my mastering and just can't decide which to use...they are indeed quite different and neither is any more difficult than the other, but the differences in the end result are so unbelievably subtle to my ears that I can't really decide anymore. I've listened to these tunes about a hundred times while driving back and forth across louisiana to different studios this weekend and think I might actually be numbing myself to the differences, so, if you would please replace my own ears for a bit... And, as usual, any suggestions, comments, questions, thoughts, criticisms, rants, raves, etc. regarding the mix are certainly welcome and appreciated. So, without further ado: A or B Which do you prefer and why? Cheers to all, Chris P.S. -Since I'm aiming at a sort of mastering comparison, the files are pretty darn big for mp3's; about 7.5 megs each. Right click and save them for the best reliability. They are multiple pass variable bit rate mp3's...but should play without a problem. |

Regarding The Dark Side of The Sun...I didn't even pay attention to the title and am sitting here listening thinking, "Geez, cool man, kind of Floydish" when I look up and see at the top of WMP "The Dark Side of The Sun" and give myself a quiet DOH! Very cool man, I'm diggin' it. BRB, Excellent work man! Those three sound great for "rough" mixes! It's quite evident that you've had a few hours under you're belt. I'd love to offer suggestions, but for "rough" mixes without vocals these are really quite superb. My personal fav is "A Psalm of David". I'd love to hear that one once some vox are laid down. I can only imagine the endless GOOD possibilities lyrically and melodically. I hope they are on par with the arrangement and instrumentation. Sounds like you've got great artists to work with. Yogev, Very nice. I like the mix on the second more than the first. The vocals seem a bit loud to me on the first one, but the girl has an excellent voice and it definitely shows. Great Work! Chris Cavell, regarding the mix it seems that in B the piano sits somewhat easier in the mix, it sounded a bit 'stressed' in A (too high in the mix, too much pressure). Also the drums are more present in B which is a good thing. So piano & drums are more in balance now in the mix (assuming B is your latest bounce), while in the beginning of B it seemed to me that the bass was just a tad too low. But later during the song that feeling disappeared. Could it be that there is a little difference in volume throughout song B regarding the bass? My 2 cents, just crank up the bass a tiny little bit in the beginning of song B and you're set (still have to find out minutes & seconds for the bass in which the additional volume editing should be done, cannot see that in Quicktime but I'll open both songs in Media Player and see if I can be more specific later on) Maybe my ears just deceive me but this was really my impression. Gotta check the songs again to be confirm/deny that impression later today. Differences between both mixes are very small indeed, you can hear that you're almost done finishing the whole product. Pianowork is staggering, in one word. Great!

They are actually the same bounce. Just two very different ways in which I impliment mastering compression. A is what I'd typically do for a rock group and B is what I'd typically do for large ensemble and symphony classical. I have two other versions but think A and B would yield the most useful info from listeners. As you can tell, I haven't really performed any level maximization yet...and the mix isn't quite complete. I'm approaching this one a little different than I normally would for mixing. Normally for Jazz and other modern music styles, I try to mix for the end listeners ear...with classical, it's with a conductors ear...but with this one, it's with the jazz musicians' ear (emphasizing the plurality of musicians'). I'm trying to mix it so that no matter which musician listens, it sounds real from their viewpoint. Tough approach as you know the dilemma, guitarist always wants more guitar, drummer always wants more drums, producer always wants it LOUDER, so I'm mixing with that in mind and trying to make it so that each hears in this mix exactly what they were attempting to dial in with their furman headphone amps while playing. I visited my pop this weekend and let him hear it, and without describing my intentions in the mix, he said, "It's like one of those paintings where the eyes seem to follow me around...no matter which instrument I focus on, I feel like I'm right there" which I take to mean that I'm getting close with it. My only real dissapointment in the recording is that the drums could have used a different acoustic space...the hall I record in is just too live for drums...but there was no way I was going to seperate these musicians into different rooms, it's great for a live recording, but a bit wet for session work. Everything here is acoustic, mics only, with all the musicians in the same room. The bass has been really tough to get sounding right due to all the bleed into his mic from the piano and drum kit, so if you'd follow up on that comment about the bass earlier, I'd be very grateful. I'm going to shoot a few impulses of the room soon and see if I can't use a very slight amount of convolution reverb on the piano to help bring the sound of the piano and drums together a bit more. There currently is no added reverb at all, and I can't really use my normal blumlein C426 hall mic for reverb b/c of the really strange way that I positioned them in the hall to reduce bleed. I put up some tunes I was working on for a bit. About the only thing completed in the past...oh..3 months. One of them is a live studio take of an old song just for fun, so its not spot on, and another track is a remix I did of a Wumpscut song. Of course, the remix was just using some of the basic layout, and the original drum samples; being that I generally like more intense music, I upped the tempo and changed the arrangement around.
