Need advice: Buy G4 Dual 1.25 or G4 Dual 1.42?
 

I need to buy a new computer to replace my old G3 450, which is maxed out and then some. I have decided not to buy the G5 because of problems I've read about and because of budget issues. I get the sense from some of these posts that there are more problems with the G4 Dual 1.4 than the G4 Dual 1.25. I have a Digi 001, and currently use OS9. If I get the Dual 1.4, I would have to use OSX, as it's a Firewire 800 version and can't boot from OSX. Any opinions?Thanks.

Correction: The G4 Dual 1.42 cant boot from OS9!

The dual 1.42 is a great machine. How much is the seller asking for it?

It's currently up for bid on eBAY, so this is somewhat of an open question. It's a new machine being sold by a dealer. The "Buy It Now" option is something like $2100. The bidding is up to $1675 currently and the reserve has not been met. I'm guessing they want at least $2000? Is that a good price?

Do you know how much RAM comes with it and whether it will come with Panther or Jaguar? Apple still sells the dual 1.25 which are great. They boot in both OS9 and OSX and have 2 meg of L3 cache. The one on E-bay probably comes with 1 meg L3 cache.

If it comes with Panther and only has 1 meg L3 cache then I wouldn't go over 2,000. Are you using a 001? If your already on OS9 and want to stay there then get a dual 1.25 from Apple and stay on OS9. You'll get more mileage.

I just upgraded from a G3 to a 1.25 dual G4. It works fine with the 001 and I get a few more plug ins in OSX rather than 9, although I have Pro tools running fine in both systems.I don't think 9 utilizes both processors OSX does.

The G4 Dual 1.42 comes with 2 megs of L3 cache for each processor.
