converting MP2 (audio only)

I am making a lot of recordings in the field on far away locations. so I record my Audio in MP2 format 384 kbps to get more hours of recordings on my compact flash.

ProTools does not support the conversion of the MPEG-1 layer 2 files. I can converse them to AIFF with MPEG streamclip. But I have the idea that somehow this application also brings all the levels 'in shape'. Cause after conversion it seems the modulation got a little stronger. Are there any other applications I can use to create a file from my MP2 that Protools can handle. It should be good quality applications.

HI,

iTunes does that quite fine or MAX http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/28353

should do it, too.

Hi regs!

thanks for your reply but unfortunately iTunes does not provide this conversion. It USED to do the job but that option had been removed a long time ago. Even with quicktime pro installed you can not converse with iTunes.

Do you yourself have any experience with MAX?

I now use MPEG streamclip and it is doing the job except for what I indicated. I believe it messes around with the levels.

I just tried MAX. I DOES NOT convert MP2 files. It has no option to open a MP2 file.

I am talking about MPEG1 layer 2. NOT MP3 (MPEG3 layer 1).

Re: converting MP2 (audio only)

HI,

well I just recently demuxed a mpeg file and converted the m1a/m2a file with itunes to mp3
so I thought mp2 might not be a problem, too.

You can try D-Vision, it has a tools section with audio conversion in it.
Since it´s for video encoding it might do it.

I just most recently came to max since I got my Macbook with 10.4 which it needs to run.
I have not uses it much, since it could not decode v3+ (ogg) files, too.

VLC (videoLanClient) has a transcode option, worth a try, too.

if nothing helps $600 Cleaner will do it.

Hey Regs!

First thanks for your info but you know I am talking about MP2 audio files. So not as a part of a movie. For some reason you can indeed demux a movie with Quicktime pro or iTunes but when you have a profesional audio-only MP2 file it simply does not do the job.

I have no idea why. Maybe it calculates the bit rate form the video portion of a combined audio/video file. But when you have a single audio file the bit rate is not even mentioned in iTunes. It simply states: UNKNOWN. It plays the sound though.... When you choose convert into AIFF it gives an error code.

you are very helpful in pointing out other options!

Thanks but if anyone knows about another 'none $600' app I'd be happy to hear ;-)

HI,

if you have the possibility to run Mac OS 9, use this:

Runs also in Classic and SheepShaver (OS 9 emulator)
