Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Roy - Nice. It's like Yes jamming with Jeff Beck. Is that a Strat I hear? Sounds like a really shiny one. ;-)

BillytheKid - Nice sound on the hip-hop. Vocals sound really smoove. Good mix.

NoviceDollars - Cool mix on the hip-hop stuff. On your acoustic song, the lead vocal sounds good, but the background vocals are a little pitchy. I used to have that problem a lot. Have you tried doubling the background vocals?

Tomy - Big production there, bro. Reminds me of Talk Talk, with really cool percussion ideas going on. Good vocal effect too.

DB - Maxin' out the sequencer. A fine tribute to MIDI.

Lotsa good stuff, everybody.

Thanks ssurfr/Greg...how've you been? I hope you guys had a great holiday season, and I want us to finally work together soon, OK? I will email you soon, too...

Aussie169,
I am seriously gonna take you up on working together. The 'Wicked' thing above was just an experimental piece, using nothing but free samples I've found... I was just playing on the side, and wouldn't consider it as anything else really, BUT I have a couple of 'song' songs(needing vocals) that I would love to collaborate on, and I will follow up with you on that ASAP. As I've said, I really admire the vocal work you achieve, and may be able to place whatever we come up with. Please email me when you can (address above) so I'll have yours again too (lost it while switching OS's I think). Thanks ~Roy

bi0force1,Gene Backlin - Thanks much for listening.

DDP - thanks for the percussion suggestion. I'm gonna try it with a djembe.

soundsurfr - what's 'pitchy' mean?

Man, those high notes are NOT my forte. (high by my standards) The vocals came out sort of labored, and I liked the effect. Generally, when my singer-songwriter hat is on, i don't like to fuss too much. Raw is better for my tastes. You can try , but you can't polish this voice or the face it bellows from! Anyhow, I have to pan the harmonies a bit too, everything's dead center at the moment.

OK guys so i've got some catching up to do now. i've made my DUC artists subfolder in My music. Here goes...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Sorry, it's producer lingo for *slightly out of tune* - just enough to make a really anal producer scrunch his eyebrows and ask for another take. I realize the high notes are at the top of your range. The technique I was suggesting - doubling - involves recording a second part, identical to the first, trying to nail all the inflections and syllables exactly. For a singer who's just slightly and only sporadically out of tune, ut tends to smooth out the pitch issues pretty well. I usually pan the the two takes pretty hard left and right.

Roy - Had a great holiday, thanks, and I hope you did the same. Been really busy on the TV music stuff - still crankin', lotsa work. Worked on my first prime time network television special which aired last week - very exciting.

By the way, I've done a little more work on that song I wanted to collaborate with you on. I'm going to also ask Paul Curtiz if he wants to sing it (Paul - you out there?) - I think his stuff is great. Talk to you via e-mail this week.

By the way - have you folks seen this?:

Hey all, first time in quite a while I've been able to stop in for any length of time and check out this thread...quite a great wealth of new stuff posted here in the interim! I just checked out the synth-oriented tracks from da Basstard and Tomy...nice work! "Beautiful Day" really envelops you.

I've also updated my site with an initial mix posted for a recently-completed song, "Reality 101." This will likely be the last update until the CD is actually finished. Stop by if you get the chance, and keep up the great work everybody...there are a lot of new MP3s I still need to listen to on here!

Hey guys,
I know that I don't ever have anything to post because I just don't have the stuff to do much recording. So I thought I would take the opportunity that badperson gave us to use his recording and just do your own mix. I thought I would post it here as well. I hope you guys enjoy.

yea, the rythm guitar is definatly a james bond sound (my older brother said the same thing when he heard it) but the strings part sounds egyptian. the rest of the song sounds like robbie the robot on crack "DANGER,DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!!! = for the last lie i'll fix you...."

All guitars are my j station. Probably needs a remix through real monitors.

ROY - Nice juxtaposition on She's a Little Wicked. The smooth and the mechanical. I liked it.

GENE - Canyon was cool. What synth are you using with that portamento effect? Sounds like a real analog. A very 3-D track.

DDP - I liked 'Carpenter.' Great drums going on there. Question, are you in that photo on the first page of your site. Thats quite a crowd. Looks like fun. I'm curious what type of gig it was (i.e., festival or something.)

FABPAB - Liked yours, too. Very crisp, able playing. Great acoustic intro, by the way. Question, why is it called 'drunk'? What guitars are you using?

novicedollars- thanks for checking out "carpenter", kind of a different style then i usually do. my friends think i've lost it

i'm the fat guy, stage right. the festival is "hempfest". a yearly gathering in seattle on the water front. basically 100,000 stoned people stumbling through the park pretending to make a political statement, but continually forgetting what that statement is. people lighting up in front of cops, everyone sharing their dope(some with cops). i'm not a user, but a couple guys in the band where in heaven! to each their own man

there's a funny story behind the picture, but i'm laughing to myself about that for now......

Just had a listen to "Down On The Ground". Man that's a long listen!!
Some very nice guitar playing there.
Couple of things that jumped out at me.... There's a tom sound that booms and is a bit annoying (but then I'm listening on Beyer DT770's which are a bit bass heavy. Also, there was a couple of occasions n the vocals where it sounds like there's a punch-in or an edit that doesn't quite line up.

Overall, a nice track. I enjoyed it.

Roy.... Just listening to "She's A Little Wicked" again. Man, that panning part is weird in the cans after a few Friday night ales!

badperson - "Big Picture"
Some nice ideas there and some good playing.
Would like to hear it in more than 96Kbps. This makes it sound dull because it chops off too many highs. I always encode my MP3s at least at 128.
Keep up the good work

Shangri-La

Same title as the Kinks, sounds nothing like 'em. Some hard earned dissonant rock with catchy melodies. Is it hard, is it soft, is it pop, is it crap?

Bey12

Catchy tune and worth persisting with.
Mix sounds a little muddy to me, like you need to do some eq type thinning out in the guitar tracks. Try to keep the mix open and let it breath. What mic and preamp are you using for vocals? They sound a bit on the flat side (tone, not tuning), almost like you're using a dynamic.

Keep it up.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

neatguys - technically, i guess you could say its a sample, of myself. played through some of the track on acoustic guitar and then found a bit i liked and looped it.

rap can be fun. i personally don't get on the mic either, except in the background, or if a sung chorus is needed. that project was feeling innovative for a while but its very hard to reproduce live on stage (the vocalist on suicide and I aren't agreeing on how to assemble this live). So I'm putting together a band ready for another attempt at a deal with some more rock oriented material.

thanks for listening.

bi0force1 - i just checked out 'girl of my dreams version 2'.

its so freakin' raw, its great. i mean, i loved it. and the embeleshments (extra/lead guitar tracks) didn't spoil that feel at all, like they sometimes can.

i don't know how you'd rap to that particular tempo - you'd either have to go really really fast or really slow (basically, in time or double-time).

a lot of rap songs fall around the 90beats/minute mark. but good luck. if i can be of any assistance, let me know.

BP- usually i notice that theres not alot of responses to people w/ mp3.com pages (or one similar to them) cause people dont like typing in all thier info (state,city,addy,ect...) over and over again.

i personally dont sign up to hear the music. ben (capt. pants) has an mp3 page that im sick of going to so i just have him send me his songs via instant messenger.

if you know how to do it, i suggest putting your songs on a free website like angelfire or geocities they have enough room on a free page to hold 4 or 5 songs w/o wanting to charge you for the space.

sorry to be a pain in the ass about this but i hate getting the 90 email that get sent to me when i sign up for crap on other websites.

Aussie169 thanks for the reply to http://www.sircuss.com/shangrila.htm

The mic I'm using is a Neumann TLM 103 Diaphram mic through the digi 001 mic input 1. I think it's a good mic, maybe I'm not eqing or recording the vocals optimumly?
What About the mix being a bit muddy and the guitars needing eq to let the mix breathe: Do you think the bass is too bassy and needs to be lower (volume) and a little more trebley to define it and the rhythm guitars a bit more defined instead of muddy? Or do you mean the trebly lead? Also there is an acoustic guitar which is up in the mix but hard to hear. That might be muddying it too.
I appreciate the linput tremendously!
Anyone else?

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Aussie169 - All Alone - I see what you mean by letting the mix breathe. Nice acoustic underneath, sweet backing vocals, nice military drums during the ending. "Zappa Tune" sounds like Jazz meets Cream. Nice quiet middle.

Neatguys - what's a J station? Wow, it hits my brain in the exact right place.

Roy - Burn - Very original down and dirty sound. Sounds like you had a lot of fun creating it, love the engine motif, it definately moves. She a little wicked reminds me of something that could have been in "Toys" and both songs have a little nod to Oingo Boingo Are they both all midi?

Gene - Love the layering of guitars on Dreams and the fiddle to crunch guitar on Snowfall.

da BaSsTaRd - nice midi b-day tune, check ya back for another one on the 25th.

fabpab - A bit progressive/heavier than I usually like. But I did enjoy most of Pain is Joy more than drunk, probably cause there's vocals. Really nice production. Voice has a touch of Bowie to it, but sound is decidedly darker.

Tomy DeClerque - How do you get that effect on vocals (I'm pretty novice). I like it, although my tastes in dance are usually less acidy on the drums.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

bey12

WOW, if you're using TLM103 you should be getting a much more open sound than you are.
OK, I'm now guessing that your main problem is your monitoring setup. That would also explain the muddy mix. What are you using for monitors? I'm guessing that they are a bit too bright and you are pulling highs out to compensate?
How much adjusting of EQ are you doing to get it to sound "right" in your speakers? You really shouldn't have to do much at all. And remeber that when you do EQ, subtractive is better than adding.
A good test is to rip a track off a commercial CD that you know well, import it into ProTools and see how it sounds in your recording environment. And that is how your mixes need to sound.

There is one very reasonably priced piece of equipment I bought for my 001. It's a dual mic preamp with digital outs, and the ADA converters are heaps better than in the DIGI. It immediately opened up the top end of my recordings. I try to track everything I can through it. It's the Mindprint DI-Port. Check it out, it's well worth its small price.
