Digi Tech Support: Control|24 Clicking Noise on Power On
 

Hey guys... happy post-holidays!

Long story short.

Went to turn on my Control|24 worksurface yesterday and instead of doing the normal Fader cycling process... it just made a clicking noise over and over... with the lights flickering so fast that you could barely even notice them blinking at all.

My questions are these below.

Is this a Power Supply issue where the PSU needs to be removed and replaced?
Or
Do I just simply need to clean the connectors?
Or
Is it a connection issue where the connectors aren't touching so they need to be "reseated"?

The reason I'm not sure is because I think if the Power Supply Unit (PSU) really did go "bad" the unit shouldn't turn on at all right?

So I'm inclined to believe that its either a cleaning issue or a connection issue.

From your guys knowledge... which of these three scenarios seems the most likely... given my description of what went wrong?

I know that the Power Supply is usually the culprit with issues such as the "All Lit Up" thing - which I don't have happening. But would the Power Supply just make the unit click repeatedly? Doesn't seem likely imo.

Thanx for your time! My girl purchased Apples 30" monitor for me for X-mas so I'm extremely eager to get back to work asap!

Sounds to me like connector's issues: such as they're getting loose enough inside the PSU by ibrations or movements..or in the worst scenario the PSU itself to be replaced.

I'm about to replace each and every single Molex connector from the PSU with new Crimp Terminals (with contact in three sides, with firm, tight grip) and see if the All lit up issues and hassles goes away once and for all.

Because every time i stumble on such glitches, the only workaround is to just re-seat a few connectors (mainly the TB4 for the scribble strip) and the problems goes away for a long period of time ...then it comes back after !

I'll let all users know if this is the real fix in a matter of weeks..

Well I went halfway around the world in search of Deoxit. Found it. Opened the back panel, removed any excess glue hanging on the board with some needle nose pliers, disconnected the white connectors, cleaned all the connector rods with Deoxit, twice, replaced the white connectors, pushed everything back in and voila! It works!

I'm still unsure whether or not it the connectors needed to be "cleaned" or just "reseated" but I did both and everything worked out. I kinda knew that it wasn't the Power Supply Unit simply because it still turned on somewhat.

I should be okay for awhile. If it happens again... I'll clean them again with Deoxit regular then apply Deoxit Gold to protect them. May even use a little heated glue gun to glue the white connectors in place so they don't vibrate and disconnect.

No problem..

But be aware that you'll need more than glue or just De-oxit / Progold...

I have both and the problem keeps rising again! Just wait a few weeks and then it'll come back and maybe right in front of clients also! Like it did here..

The connectors are way too loose and they'll move again and again trust me i spent 3 years living with this problem. Digi *really* should have made all these connectors with Trifurcon Crimp terminals with 3 contact - firm connection - instead of loose when you connect them.

Even had the C24 repaired twice by a Digi authorized center without any luck They figured out the same thing as me....Connections...

I'll post the recipe right here when i will be SURE that it is going to get FIXED once and for all.

Well here's the results (applies only for the older Control24).

So far so good.

Been two weeks now running the Control24 almost 24/24 and using it against heavy sessions. No scribble strip problems, no flashing leds and monitoring problems.

But i'm not 100% convinced, if i manage to pass 6 months like that then i'll definitely have to say that i've fixed it.

I replaced every molex connector you can found inside the Control24 with new crimp terminals anbd cleaned everything at both ends. Now they are secured and tight cannot move at all ! So if something happens it coule be vibration anymore.

When you're right you're RIGHT! This issue is back again!

I'm very tempted to try your method but it really seems pretty complicated and somewhat risky.

So I would have to remove those old white connectors and replace them with these new Molex ones? So how do I go about that in a safe manner? Do I have to do some sort of wire crimping? Also theres little to NO room to work with as all I have is that small rear panel removed and it only comes out so far.

Any input would be very helpful!

By the way... where's Digi Tech Support??? It's been months and they haven't even replied.

I'll be honest... between having no ADC and my Control 24 doing this VERY annoying and inconvenient connection thing... plus Apples Logic dropping their price to DIRT CHEAP... Logic is looking rather handsome right now.
