LA Scoring Strings vs Hollywood Strings

I'm currently using EWQL Symphonic Orchestra platinum (Play edition), and although I'm nowhere near using it to it's fullest, I've started to explore what's out there for strings only.

I've watched the videos and tutorials available for both, and listened to all the demoes, and to my ears they all sounds great. But, I have a hard time believing that the 40GB LASS library can compete with the 310GB HS library.

Any thoughts on this?

If you're happy dealing with Play (I'm not!) and unless you really need divisi samples I'd get both LASS Lite AND the cheaper version of Hollywood Strings. Best of both worlds!

Also bear in mind HS is VERY demanding of system resources.

If you like your violas in tune you're best off with LASS!!!! ;-)

Ouch!

That did not sound good at all. Appearantly, there's also some poorly edited staccatissimo patches in HS too. I hear a diminished fifth in some of the single note examples. Yikes!

I've read the entire thread you linked to, and listened to all the examples from the HS users. The violas sounded horrible indeed, tuning-wise. Some users claim the LASS also is out of tune, but I don't know if there's any truth to this.

Since I got help to figure out the quirks with Play, I have no problems using it. Since I use Play on a separate Mac, I can use my ethernet console without problems too. Play memory server and Kontakt memory server obviously hate each other, so I use Play in it's own 32-bit instance of VEP, and sometimes Play and Ivory together.

I will definitely wait and see what happens with HS before I decide. Thanks.

Ouch indeed!!! Those violas need some work! What got me was the totally inadequate response from the EW guy who seemed in denial.

LASS tuning sounds fine to me, (I have the lite version,) but it's not super tight. I haven't felt the need to re-tune anything yet, (which you can do in Kontakt of course!!) I'm quite fussy too. I don't buy the "a little bit out of tune makes it sound more natural" argument.

You're stuck with tuning in HS until they choose to fix it and it seems hard work persuading them there's a problem in the first place!

I totally agree, but I suspect that the guy is between a rock and a hard place. I highly doubt that the two top dog producers (let's call them Nicklas and Douglas) welcome critisism at any level. I've seen them ignore user feedback more than once before, and that's what I really hate.

LASS and/or Vienna.

That all depends on which packages you buy. In order to have the same instruments as HS it is less than that.

I think that a combination of LASS and Appassionata Strings would be a good combination.

I wouldn't suggest Complete as it's almost certainly overboard for the OP's needs. To the OP: you'd have to check their site to know what's appropriate.

Here are their strings options:

I am the OP. ;)

Let's take the Vienna Orchestral Strings bundle, which is OS I and II. That alone costs twice as much as the 2-for-1 deal EW has going on now. So, I could buy Hollywood Strings diamond + Stormdrums 2 bundle for less money than any of the bundles from Vienna. I'm just sayin'...

In terms of quality, I don't know what to get. They all sound great to me. And the Vienna Complete bundle is definitely overkill for me. I assumed that Complete was roughly the equivalent to HS diamond. Thanks.

Dang it - all these choices...
