<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Hey, thanks for posting that. I really like the NIN approach in the final chorus vamp. Very cool and unexpected.

If you don't mind my saying, it sounds like the tempo has you singing so fast it's hard to really "own" the song vocally. Not that there's anything wrong with the vocal (except the dodgy bits you already acknowledged), it just sounds like the vocals are being herded a bit by the instrumental rather than feeling like the instrumental is supporting the vocal intent.

Does that make sense?

Anyway, it's a great arrangment with some really cool effects and it's quite close to being "there", if you know what I mean.

Thanks again,
Rhett

Hadjipita,
Great song and energy... There are some great guitar/bass chordings and structure here. The Fully Down huh? Well, I definitely expect to hear them go on to big things. Even their philosophy on music sounds good to me. Good job on the mix, too. Thanks for the listen...

~Roy

Looking forward to the others, too...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks Rhett, I appreciate those kind statements. About that 'special' end piece. I have heard renditions of enjoy the silence from MANY bands(Tori Amos, APB, Failure, etc..) And I was thinking, none of these people that redo this song do anything for the end of the song, and since that long period of music can not be matched to the original ending of the song, I figured, Id just put some chorus vox to the end-piece using my special atonal choir skills.

As for the Music pushing the vocals, I know what you mean. I actually originally sung the Chorus just with that opening piano(started with a different idea) and then decided to add drums. and hard solid beat.

I am probably going to go over the vox tommorow with a more decent mic' I just recieved back from the shop from repairs. The version you heard was recorded on a $60 Shure AXS mic.

Thanks for the listen, I appreciate it.

Hadjpita,

Great Job!!! That mix is superb, in my opinion. It's tight, clean, the instruments are sitting nicely in relation to each other and the vocals are right where they need to be. Interesting effects on the backing vocals in the bridge.

The band is really good too, which I know is most of the battle.

Excellent. Putting it in my *Best of DUC* file.

mjames08,
Man, I am so impressed by all 3 of these songs, I truly am. 'Last Night', 'Rope and Ribbon', and 'Frequent Flyer' all show the band's (SURF's) obvious style, but each song is unique and well written. The thing that really gets me though, are the vocals and good lyrics. This may be strange as a comparison, but there's something very Beach Boys about the vocals at times to me.(and man, that should be taken as a compliment, because even the Beatles admired Beach Boys vocals).
Whether you did this in your garage or a killer studio, it's obviously heartfelt music, and you did a great job, im my opinion. Please let me know when you have anything new. Good luck and thanks... ~Roy

Hadjipita,

Just wanted to say that I love the song and that I've actually been a fan since you posted a long time ago (as Hadji, I think). I checked them out on mp3.com and I checked out thier website and they're just great. What's the word? EP coming out? I thought you guys were making a full record... Anyway, do tell... I think they're great and you've done a wonderful job... and I'd love to get my hands on whatever recordings they/you are coming out with. Let me know.

Thanks,

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi NoviceDollars,
Given that you've got a really good feel going here, here's my suggestions to maybe improve the mix. I agree with SSRJazz on the drums, but I would suggest a different kick and snare too. (both ring too much for one thing... a tighter, but still very deep kick... and a good rap snare would be great with this, I think).
Also, I would be more sparse with the guitar licks. Less would be more here, in my opinion. If it were me, I'de probably add a simple keyboard something , very sparse, that would return here and there.
But all this, with the understanding that it's a damn good song at the core, in my opinion...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Roy, SSRJazz:

Thank you much for those excellent suggestions. I'm very new to this. Your ideas both make a lot of sense.

As for replacing the kick or snare, this is all done with a live drum set, the whole kit at once, so i cannot disassemble the drums individually. Even though I used a AGK112 for the bass drum, the SM57 snare mic pretty much got the bleed from everything. I've had such a hard time with drum machines. With the live kit, i got the feel i wanted, but i sacrificed some separation. it's a loop of course, but from a home-made library.

i agree the guitar is a bit combatitive at times. i just liked it so much because it was a real-time play through. i ended up having to chop it a bit for the 3 minute version.

anyway, you might be starting to see the niche i'm tryin to build. i want an acoustic approach to hip hop recording/production. this was my first attempt outside the 4-track world.

A lot to be done. I thank you both again, sincerely. I will post when I have revised.

sean.

I have a new song(to you guys anyway) up. It's my epic, clocking in at over 8 minutes. It's actually the first song I ever wrote, just over 2 years ago.
www.geocities.com/metaltim
The song in the spotlight is "Killing Me"
Suggestion: Fire one up and just chill

Also the song "mask" has been put up since the last time I posted here, so if you'd like, you can give that one a try.

All comments are welcomed with heart..

Hello Fellow DUC'ers.
I have a version of Depeche Mode's Enjoy The Silence that I am working on. I know on the first verse there are a few off key spots, and when I learn how to handle them vocally, I will re-sing and repost, but if anyone would like to listen to the song as it is now(complete less the 1st verse) then go right ahead. If you want to avoid hearing the sour notes, play it loud!

The link is here:
http://Basstardz.dhs.org/enjoy.mp3
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Captain - Great song. Almost everytime I pick up my acoustic, that is one I play. I have a low voice, so DM is right in my vocal range...

Novicedollars:

my input on your mix:

bring the level on the drums down a bit...and bring up the overall level of the master mix...the drums are way out in front overpowering everything else...

other than that...sounds pretty good..

DDP,

"Feel it again" is a great song. Nice effect on the vocals. It got me pumped up this morning for another long day at the office.

NoviceDollar,

Great song, nice beat. I really liked the guitar on the song. Are you the guitar player?

Thanks,

NoviceDollars 11-07-2002 11:22 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks. No the guitar is played by the first vocalist (male). This guy started playing about a year or two ago, described to me his ideas, and we threw it down. Glad you liked it.

I'm working on cutting down two more tunes with the same set acoustical set up to three-minute mixes. Those should be up by the end up next week. One uses a wah-wah instead of the wammy-bar, the other is acoustic and electric intertwined.

Plastik, I just checked out your stuff. I loved the rebel drums man. Always liked those. I was hoping it would be a bit darker, maybe some darker overtones or somehting, but it was cool. mixmasterc- thanks for listening!
the effected voice in the verses are actually mine from the scratch vocal track when i was writting the tune . instead of waiting around for a couple of days for the singer to learn the song, i just got creative with the effects and made him sing just the choruses and bridge(where being in key counts.....kind of). come to think of it, most of the gutar tracks are from my original "writting scratch tracks". if it weren't for pro tools, that song probably never would have happened......technology man!

Hey, Whattya know, I got a new song up.

This song is called "Sends Me Goodbye" This song was inspired by a bunch of things. First off, I would have to say that it is sort of my private mantra I say to myself after a nice hard day. The thought of just letting my brain open up, and getting rid of all the useless thoughts, and just RELAX!; take a load off....

2nd: I wanted to try working on something that was very relaxing, while at the same time keeping quite busy. (Sort of like a typical Enigma song).

3rd: I wanted to put some Spanish guitar in there, something I have yet to do.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it.
You can find it HERE.

The song is called "Sends Me Goodbye"

Thanks!

Shinock is the name of the group: the two vocalists and the back up band.

Not using anything special. An AKG D112 on the bass drum, (yamaha stage custom set).

Dont have any outboard gear, except for a mackie 16 vlz pro, strictly for the preamps and direct outs.

BURNiN a woody! Right on.

mixmasterc 11-08-2002 09:16 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

DDP,

Burnin' a woody is on the first verse. I just pitch shifted the vox to a second track and panned the pitch shift hard right.

Sean,

Just goes to show that you don't need alot of gear to make good music.

CAPTIAN PANTS: you know me to be honest and a loud mouth and you yourself have asked me to pick your tunes apart befor, so with that in mind i say this.

i personally feel the only thing in your song that doesnt belong there is the dance/techno drums..... everything else runs smoothe and together but the drums kill it for me....its like the commercial where the chocolate and peanut butter are being poured smoothly and then they get mixed together and then the f***in' twix bar hits it all and the s**t splashes everywhere......i think your better off making reese pieces than twix in this case.

then again, its just my opinion, and as you know, people dont think it amounts to anything

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I have no clever analogs to popular cholocate confections, but I have to agree with Bi0Force1 that this almost perfectly delicate song seems over balanced by the techno/gated snare drums.

Could we hear the track with those drums muted or perhaps a version where the beat manifests later in the track?

Otherwise, quite nice. Thank you!
