And now for something completely different...
The amount of talent in this thread is just awesome!
I have posted one basic "overproduced" love ballad before. Here is a different view. Four drum mikes, live guitar and bass, everything leaking to everything including the demo voc from the PA. Two more Amplitube guitars and a bunch of vocals... I suppose this is a trad tune, not sure though. There´s a Boston based punk band who did this tune kinda this way... we just did this for fun ,well, this is a practise work to make bad sound good, so to speak. I srewed up the MP3 mastering a bit though, too much limiting in the low end so it is (supposedly) suffering. Dunno for sure, I´m on a laptop with no extra speakers now. Hard to hear the lyrics in the choruses... which may be a good thing indeed. Spicy Mc Haggis |

Cool tune! Mc haggis LOL!
Kind of a scottish/celtic punk rock vibe. A good listen. |

PR
New song from my mill. Apu PR.
It tells that countries promise a lot of money as emergency aid. But usually only ˝ will be paid. Free feel to say anything. Especially hints how to improve my mixes are welcome. And yes, it is Ticky Clav again... |
Re: New TBR test of the new rooms.
badperson,
For the guitars, I actually was using 4 mics. The TLM-103 a pair of 435's and the 012. The TLM is the cleanest, but those 435's are a close, close second. We a/b'd them to a pair of U87's in a big studio and the client linked the 435's better. They were brighter, and had a bit more clarity. However the U87 was definitely a smoother, flatter sound. Take that combination and proper placement and it seems to work for me. And Yes, I did compress it a bit towards the end. Actually I reposted the song to the same link without the RComp in Pro Tools. Figured the outboard 1176 was enough. :-) It was really just to hear the room and get it done quickly. Thanks for the comments though. I will post more when his band gets in. - Doc SWEETEST REASON |

Something wrong with www.mikseri.net
I let you know when it is fixed. Mikseri.net is free, so I have to accept some bugs. |
Re: PR
Thanks Roy,
I'm doing my own album next month, hope it turns out well...I'll post when I'm mixing. R |
Re: As clean as I can, for now...
Ahhhhh... Nice all around. Great mix, great EQ, precise and appropriate use of FX -- and the vocals and lyrics mesh with the instruments. I'm keeping this one. :-) I can't seem to find the loon cry, but I might be hearing it and thinking it's the flute.
Only constructive feedback I'll offer is to make the drum pattern a 16 bar repeat instead of 8 (assuming the hi-hat hits are quarters and not eights). The 3/3.5/4.5 snare becomes conspicuous after only a few measures. |

Re: A sad song.
Happiness is a warm Strat. Nice work. Sometimes it's what you leave out that makes the tune good. OK, that's cliche but I'm stickin' to it.
Which pickup(s) did you use? |
Re: Happy New Year
I wish my first ProTools mix sounded like this. It's clear you've got an ear. The electric guitar seems to push other things out of the way during the chorus but there's so much going on in there that you'd really have to fiddle with the mix a LOT to get the levels right. Love the tune.

Re: Latest stuff...
Welcome to the digital audio workstation experience. I see you found the audio reverser (or is it the swell?) and it sounds remarkably good here. Also: very creative use of metal chords against the otherwise loose, cyclic clean guitar.
I'd get the bass. Something tells me you'd layer it in nicely. |

Finne,
Finally got to hear 'Apu PR'...good job on the mix...and I like the instrumentation...guitars, drums, bass, and Ticky Clav sound good.....very interesting lyric concept too. I still haven't learned Finnish, so thanks for explaining the lyric. Good job... -Roy |

Thanks for the listen. I challenged myself to get the best mix I could. Excellent suggestion about the drums. Although I'd like to keep the 8 bar repeat during the fade out (as he marches off to war) because of its martial feel. I'll fix it up. Loon cry is right after second chorus. |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Yeah, I bet you all were wondering when I would come back and use you guys for your invaluable criticism and praise!! We are just about out of the pre-production phase of the new album and I would like some feedback on the new songs when y'all get a chance. They songs aren’t done, but the ideas are there (minus some lyrics...so if it seems like there should be lyrics....there will be!).

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Here's a sample of what I've been doing with a local band, D-Railed.
All done on a DIGI002R, G4 AGP w/1.2G processor upgrade, 1G of memory. http://d-railed.org/Pawn%20Shop%20King.mp3 I mastered it using Limo5 compressor (free, and it's awesome) and T-Racks. Comments, suggestions are welcome. Don |

This time I built chorus/verse/ch/ver/ch. And I found some variation inside verse too. Nice you noticed it despite rare language!! I supose it takes several years to learn this wonderful piece of highest civilization on earth. So I'm not suprised. |

Roy,
Maybe a bit late to comment on your song but I'll do it anyway. I can truly hear those feelings in there. Good song, but you know I always enjoy your music and my best to you and your father. |

Jack Rabbit, wish i could get my Takamine to sound like that when recording.
Love the track, you have a very distinctive voice, reminds me of Ian Anderson. The first half sounds very English to me, could imagine it as incidental music in Inspector Morse or the like. Paul England (and yes it is raining) |

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Ok fellas I was looking at this thread...and I'm hoping that you guys can help me out. I've been studying the mixing and mastering process via the internet and things of that sort. I started from scratch and I'm progressing slowly but surely. Ok, now after 3 years (lol) I've just purchased Pro Tools Le 6.4. I have a MXL 990 Condenser Mic Running thru an ART Tube Pre Amp directly in to the MBox. I've had no real problems adjusting to the interface and things of that sort. I've just mixed down a test freestyle that one of my friends layed down when I got the system up and running (I do Hip Hop/Rap primarily). Now, the standard process I use to clean the vocals coming in to the MBox are as follows..
First - Noise Reduction Second - Compression Third - De-Esser Fourth - Very Light Reverb Fifth - Parameteric EQ Sixth - Normalize or Limit I dont use presets I try to listen as I clean them and do everything by ear (I read that somewhere). Unfortunately, I am not satisfied with the finish results. The Mix is audible and I can hear everything but for some reason it lacks that punch...the EQ's dont seem to be right either...The vocals are not melting into the track like I want them to...As I edit the songs...I listen to them thru a stereo/surround system with L/R Speakers a Center Speaker and a Subwoofer. I'm saving up for some studio powered-speakers. I've attached a link to the song I just mixed...It's called "Strat's Birthday Freestyle" Strats B-Day Freestyle Is there anyone out there with more experience then me, that can Listen to this mix and give me some pointers or maybe point out wat I may be doing wrong...I'm pretty sure..I'm over doing something...I just dont know wat it is...Thanks for anyhelp or advice u guys leave me...I have pretty thick skin so dont hold back anything...ha ha Oh Yeah one more thing...The vocals were Mono and the Track (which is a random instrumental) is in Stereo...I'm not sure if that makes a difference. |
Re: American Neo-Romantic Techno-Klezmer
Jack Rabbit - just listened to For Jennifer, Crown and War - really enjoyed them all. Nice songwriting and arrangments and yadada -
gonna put out a CD soon? |
Re: American Neo-Romantic Techno-Klezmer
MH-
When you say cleaning, are you talking about audiosuite? I prefer plugins. Sounds like you cleaned the life out of a not so exciting performance. You might want to have this artist double the performance to add punch. Try an 1176 plugin. Hmm. it all comes down to performnace. i was tracking a band who wondered why their song didnt have as much punch as a KORN cd. i didnt have the heart to tell them.... 1) Arrangement 2) Talent 3) Performance. Everything else is secondary. It is a cool song though! Talented rhyming. -BigJ |
Re:Bub
Thanks Bub wats an 1176? Is that a Compressor/Bomb Factory Plugin? Thanks again for the feed back...and I did mean Audio Suite when I said "cleaning audios" earlier...I'm using Waves 5.0...Any more suggestions? Does it sound over compressed...or is it an EQ problem...Sorry I'm just trying to narrow down where I'm going wrong at.

Can you get back to the original wav in the file list view? I would start over on processing. I usually only use Audiosuite for clip removal, autotuning, normalizing, stuff like that. Some subtle eq. Use the waves REQ4 or something. Boost the heck out of one fewquency...and sweep it up and down the spectrum until you REALLY hear something that doesnt sound good. Cut there (always cut with a tight Q is possible, boosting can be a wider Q). Rinse and repeat a few times. If you hear something you really like that helps define the track...BOOST IT (a bit). Im sure comeone else can ecplain this better...but it will get you started. Sometimes...less = more. Try GOOD studio headphones if your monitoring stinks. Good luck! Post back! -BigJ |
