Can a Digi-001 system be used as a sound card?

Hi,

This is a simple question (yes I'm a noob). I'm thinking of getting a Digi001 system and I'm wondering if it can replace my soundcard. In other words, if I were to play back MP3's with Winamp could I use the Digi001 as the output to my monitors? Or will it only be 'active' while ProTools is running?

Thanks!

You can use the 001 as a soundcard if you install the wave-driver. That way you can play back everything, but you cannot record through it. In addition, there is a pretty good ASIO-driver for the 001. It can all co-exist together.

on top of this page you'll find a link called "downloads". I bet you can find there what you are looking for. The thing you are looking for is called "wavedriver" and "ASIO-driver". Be sure toi download the one for your OS and your Digidesign interface...

http://www.digidesign.com/download/wave/ thats the link.

also you may want to look into Rails little program vcalled MME-helper to assign more proigrams to be able to use the digidesign interface as an output.

So will the wave driver enable output from games as well? I don't need full 5.1 or anything, just 2 channel output is fine for something like Half Life 2.

The wave driver is still "hit and miss' with some apps, I doubt if you'll be able to use the driver to play all your Game Audio through your digi hardware, some may work, but most probably will not.

hi

i'm currently using the 001 with several other apps in Windows XP without problems. The Wave Driver is pretty poor but works with Sound Forge and others for playback at least. ASIO drivers are pretty good. I'm using WaveLab5 and Nuendo2 with them and actually work.

Rocco.

I would suggest if you still want to be sure to hear all your games and other stuff to leave in the stock soundcard. Take the output from the cpu soundcard into the 001 ins 3 and 4 when they are not in use for recording (1/8” stereo to l-r ts adapter from Radio Shack not included). Inputs 3 and 4 can be switched into the output signal path by the “monitor mode” switch on the front panel of the 001. Quick, easy, and guaranteed to work with every program.
