Video engine in 22.5 and 22.6

I must say the 22.5 and 22.6 updates have been the worst video engines in a long time.
Never had so many video engine crashes in years.

Just me? All was fine and smooth in 21.12. Then I went to 22.5 and the problems started. 22.6 from today same thing.

Frank.

What video codec are you using? (and what wrapper)

I haven't had any issues with 22.4, 22.5 (just started 22.6 so still needs time)
h264 and ProResProxy (wrapped in .mov containers)

Always DNxHD36 either QT or MXF. Currently QT. h264 is a nono. ProRes I hardly ever see and if yes I transcode to DNxHD. 99% is DNxHD on my planet anyway.

Had at least 10 "unknown video engine" and "unable to stop" errors today. Went to 22.6 hoping for the better but it actually got worse. Often PT freezes when saving the temp file before it saves the actual session.

Installed the HD driver with prior de-install as per AVID's recommendation so that's not it either.

Deleted PT prefs 10 time.No change either.

21.12 ran super smooth. I only updated to 22.5 to get rid of the "Y" and "E" keys.

I see you use OpenCore. Will try that next and see if a different OS works better. Everything was rock solid on 12.21 and I changed nada.

I guess I'll live with the Y and E annoyances and go back to 21.12.

Frank.

This is always with your video output through the Black Magic? Check if a direct video display has the same issue (instead of out the BM.) My guess is it is a Blackmagic issue.

(I didn't mention it but also Avid DNxHD36 for me. I always have two videos in my session: h264 on one track and ProResProxy or DNxHD36 on another. Reason being is when I want to output a quick clip I online the h264)

This is precisely why I walked away from Blackmagic. The endless dance of what driver works with what OS and what pro tools version was a constant struggle, with regular crashes. As soon as I switched to AJA, my video has been rock solid using ProRes and DNxHD. I’ve used AJA ioXT, Kona, TTap, and TTap Pro, and they’ve all worked great on 2022.5, M1 Max MacBook Pro (Monterey), and Intel 7,1 Mac Pro Tower (Big Sur).

To Frank and others,

Updated to PT Ultimate 2022.6.0 on Apple M1 Max 64GB macOS Monterey 12.3.1 then tried to bounce a mix but get the following error: Video within the current timeline selection is not supported for Same as Source export. The Same as Source option will be disabled.

Could you or others offer a reason for this error I was trying to bounce a MOV file that starts to bounced down the audio and video but upon trying to export to a Quicktime Audio and Video Tracks file it takes a long time to render the file.

The original video was edited in Davinci Resolve 18 Beta outputted in the H.264 codec at 30fps

Not sure if it still works, but I've successfully swapped the video engine in the past because of issues.
Right click the PT app -> show package contents -> contents -> frameworks -> video engine. Copy the 2021.12 engine and paste it here. Make sure you backup the current one. They all have version numbers. Some PT versions share the same video engine.

The video engine has had it's ups and downs since 2019.10 IIRC. I haven't seen it as stable as PT 2019.6 in the last few years.
I'm also a BM user so it might be just that :D

I have had the opposite experience. I found PT 22.5 playing back ProRes video in an MXF container on my AJA T-Tap to be very responsive, with almost no errors at all. This is both on my Mac Pro 6,1, and my Mac Studio Ultra.

(I was also very pleased to find that the T-Tap works on the Mac Studio, since AJA no longer tests it)

How do you like the Aja stuff? I am thinking about upgrading to that.. It seems to be much less problematic than some of the Blackmagic stuff and have heard that the support for some people has not been that great either. Thanks for the T-Tap note. I'll probably at some point get the 4k version, but not urgent at the moment.

Always found the AJA stuff more reliable than Blackmagic. i was in a playback once with a room full of producers where video stopped outputting and we had to halt for hours. Couldn't figure out what happened.
Turned out to be the Blackmagic frame buffer was getting overfilled. Swapped the card to AJA and have, ever since, not gone down the Blackmagic route.
