Re: New Sound FX Library!
From a beautiful tradition to an idiosyncratic new library!

While the THUNDER SHEET has been used evocatively in classical music and theatre for eons,
we decided to explore what was possible as source material for contemporary sound design,
first with a hefty Sabian bronze thunder sheet and then veering into DIY territory.
And well... I now appear to own fourteen thunder sheets!

The smallest three are brass and are very zingy, while the largest steel sheet creates epic
reverbant booms, but often with weird sounding harmonics...
Each thunder sheet revealed its sweetspots, with some materials moaning & then screeching
when a friction mallet was used, others warping and inverting with beautiful pitch bends...
Meanwhile the plastic sheet has a weird tonality all of its own!

Captured 24bit 192kHz with a pair of Sennhesier MKH8020, the resulting 15.3GB library
is an extraordinarily rich resource for creating iconic new sounds.

Now available - Shanghai Ambiences

More preview sounds on Soundcloud:

Shanghai is a fascinating and lively city, full of contrast – a mixture of old and new, with towering skyscrapers looming over winding residential lanes, with streets full of rattling old bicycles and electric scooters, with noisy trucks rolling alongside almost silent electric cars.

The elevated highways that cross the city give certain areas a dense, constant rumble, while the city’s many parks offer a range of sounds, full of people and activity during the day, and generally quite empty at night – offering a diffuse, distant sonic perspective of the environment.

This library contains many of the everyday sounds of the city, with a variety of on and off-street recordings, interior and exterior walla, park and bird atmospheres, restaurant interiors, traffic, and even a range of metro recordings. While some of this library’s sounds are quite specific to Shanghai, the majority could be used in other large city environments, particularly in but not limited to those cities where Mandarin is the most common language.

All recordings were made with a pair of Lewitt LCT 540s microphones in an ORTF configuration. These microphones have extremely low self noise and a wide, balanced frequency response, allowing for the detailed capture of a range of sounds, from distant and quiet to close, loud and chaotic, from the deep rumble of engines to the supersonic screeching of brakes. Recorded at a sampling rate of 96kHz, these recordings contain detailed information above 20kHz, expanding the possibilities for sound manipulation by slowing and pitching down the recordings.

Specs: 65 files • 65 sounds • 24 bit / 96 kHz • 6.89 GB • Includes metadata
Duration: Approx. 199 minutes total

HISSandaROAR AMB016 WIND DRAFT is now released
with 50% discount until Sale Ends on September 1st!

Check out the MAKING OF video

WIND DRAFTS are incredibly useful as source material for creating spooky, haunted ambiences and bone chilling desolate arctic winds, as well as components for whooshes, movement and transitions. AMB016 WIND DRAFT represents a unique 10.7GB collection of new recordings, perfect for realism as well as super natural and more stylised applications.

The first two locations were naturally occurring: staying in an old bach at Patea I noticed how the log burner chimney was moaning in the wind, so I captured it with a pair of contact mics as well as an MKH8040. The second location was in Papamoa: as Cyclone Gita pounded the coast, the beach house I was staying in literally shook, as the wind whistled around the exterior doors.

The remainder of the recordings were all captured by placing vented bottles directly in the path of strong Nor' West winds. After experimenting with a range of bottle sizes and vents with DPA 4060 mics sheltered inside, further recording involved larger vented buckets (with MKH8040 inside) and two vented water cooler bottles. These recordings were captured at 192kHz to four tracks, in sync, so the same wind gusts can be felt resonating amongst the different scale cavities. Slowed down the naturally occurring harmonics provide some very powerful sub bass.
