Dual 17\" or one bigger monitor?

I've been struggling for way too long on a single 17" LCD monitor for all my audio work (PTLE, Logic, etc). FWIW, I'm using a Mac (see sig below).

It's about time I upgraded to something bigger. Would it be better to add a 2nd 17" monitor (I already own an identical one so it wouldn't cost anything), or to purchase a 21" widescreen monitor. I'm using the 2nd 17" on my non-audio PC at home, so I could replace it if a dual-17" was the way to go.

Also, how weird would it be to use a 17" and and 21" at the same time? I've never used two monitors and am assuming they both have to be set to the same resolution.

...and finally, are their special cables I need, or can I run one monitor through the DVI and the other through the VGA port?

How about a 23" widescreen? I use the Apple and love it but there are certainly cheaper alternatives out there now.
You could try the dual 17" screens you have now, assuming they are identical.

Possibly...Dell has a 22" widescreen for only about $300.

Its hard to beat 2 monitors. I was running a pair of 19" LCD's and the only complaint I had was that it seemed every time I was editing waves, I would have to slide things left or right as the edit area would end up straddling the 2 screens. I just bought one of the Dell 22" widescreen(same screen height as a 19") and keep the edit window on that and mix window and plugins on the 19'. Now my only complaint is "where the heck is my curser?????" (lots of screen real estate). BTW, the Dell looks great but you need a video card that will do its native resolution. I bought Dell on sale for $279.
