Deep In Scarlett

Roy,

I really like this kind of vibe, great job. I like the lead in the 2nd half of the tune. How did you get that lead guitar sound? Is it the front pick up on a strat, with the tone all the way down ran through a signal processor or synth that tracks the guitar; or is it just guitar ran through amplitude or some other amp emulator, with efx? Its fantastic sounding stuff. I also use tone modules for drums and love the clean way that they come off. The only thing I would say, (picking at straws) is a slight bit of compression with a tad longer release on the panned percussion stuff, would make it a bit more tucked in; and realistic sounding on the kit in the mix. However, not too much as I dig panned percussion that sticks out a bit in a stereo mix. I see it as a dreamy, acid trippy type tune, more than just elevator music. I think its fantastic so this is just IMHO. Some enigma type female samples in an arabic tonal scale, ran through that reverse processor you have on the key pads, used with discression would be way cool. However, that's just my take on the tune... I will stop as I am starting to produce/marr another artist's vision. Its great as is.

Excellent job on the mix without vocals you posted, I meant to reply when you first posted, but was very busy as of late. You have what I call a pristine, crisp sounding top end on the drum kit, reminds me of the police. I studied the mix for a while over a few days and my only thought was that the kick is a tad low on the mix. If you can get the kick up a bit to lock in with the bass it would be perfect. I am only talking a tad more 5% or so at the beater/attack point and the low end feel it point, but very gently, as its real close to on target. Great job though, again just IMHO, I am also very intersted in how the singer approaches these tracks.

I am also interested in what mic. order you used to mixed the drums.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DoyleMusic,

Great job on the tune with the female vox. My only thought was I would love to hear a grand piano in the mix ala. Sarah Mclaughlin (is that spelled right) Vs. the intro key patch, that to my ear always sounds clanky, maybe just to me... . Its just my preference, as I have never liked that particular patch with close verb on the elec piano, I have never gotten it to work well with anything. You did a great job and its works for you, I am just always curious how things would sound with other patches. Since you didn't use midi it would be hard to flip through patches and see how they fit the mix though. You are one heck of a precise key player, as I could swear that its quantized midi, as the timeing of the notes is so exact. As I said, great job, I am just picking at straws. Its a pro thing and very well done.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I like this thread as I see a lot of constructive criticism between fellow journeymen, with a kind intent Vs. slams on each other, that help artists reach new heights in their final mixes. I mean no attack on anyone who has posted tunes here, as I am amazed at the level of quality of mixes in this thread. ...And feel free to check out my stuff and give me your take on it. BTW: I am just doing my own music for fun these days and am not seeking a record deal, as I am too old and tired to pursue a music career. I am retired now due to a rare and severe illness http://www.tna-support.org/ and am here to help out you guys, who are seeking record deals or just wanna' bounce your mixes off of a guy with a lot of professional experience, in the music and film industry.

The first link below is a partial list of things I did in my professional career, as a Mastering Engineer and Music Producer, so that you can get a better idea of where I am coming from, when I comment on a tune. Please never take me wrong, I am here to give constructive criticism, not to attack anybody’s hard work. If anyone wants to shoot me some email for whatever reason that's greatly appreciated as I am pretty much a shutin these days, so I am here I am at [email protected] Now on with the .mp3 parade...

Hello All,

This is my first song recorded entirely in PT LE 6.1!! I'm looking for a whole lotta criticism:)

I'd be grateful for your feedback regarding my mixing/mastering skills, or the lack thereof, and any tips you can give me regarding how to get the best sounding recording - plugins, etc.

Here's my setup:

Acoustic Gtr: Guild DC5E with fishman pickups
Elect Gtr: Yamaha Pac 904 through a fender Blues junior.
Vocals: An MXL (?) studio mic I got on sale when Mars went outta business
Bass: Fender P-Bass also run through the Blues Juinior (big mistake?)
Drums: Boss Dr-670 (I'm thinking of getting FXpansion's BFD or ableton Live)
Synth: Yamaha S03

The only plugins i use outside of Digirack is the Waves renaissance bundle.

On my master stereo fader I used a Waves Compressor, 6chan EQ and Dither.

Everything was recorded at 24bit/96 khz and dithered down to 16/44.1.

http://robpiero.lunarpages.com/TheWeddingSongFinal.mp3

Thank you for any constructive criticism in advance!

(though you can say nice things too:) heh

cheers,
RM

Here a few new tracks; First two kind of breakbeat, the third has a slowed down jungle vibe and the last one is more of an acidic bridge/interlude thing.

Any comments welcome !

Cheers,

Editor, thanks for the feedback! I actually got the same comment back from a friend on the attack of the intro keys, so obviously, there is something to this. I will look into softening the attack or trying a different patch. Thanks again.

Although this is my first post, I have been lurking on this topic for a while and I too appreciate the feedback given. Everyone offers positive constructive critisicm good or bad, and that's what I think we are all in search of. Good topic Roy. I'll be posting again.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

editor,
Thanks for the compliments! I actually tracked the vocals last Friday, but have decided that I do not like them. I spoke to the band, and they have agreed to come back in and re-take them for a small fee. They won 10 hours of time from me, so the three songs we tracked were free, and they really like the result thus far. They are shooting for radio play, so I think it is worth their while to take an hour per song to really nail it down. The singer has a real Incubus feel, but he needs to open up. He was very nasaly and I hate that! Told him that he was out of key and just did not cut it. Kinda harsh words, but crap in, crap out ya know.... Hopefully they will retake it soon....

On the mic order... I usually start with the kick, EQ and get it where I like it, then move to the snare. I use the Overheads, Snare (top and bottom) and kick primarily and just ride the hell out of the faders when I mix the toms. Kinda funny, you spend all the money on 421's and you only automate the hits. That saying, I started their toms at -14bd and set them all there (3 tracks) I then go into each tom hit and automate it with a quick curve to get the attack, then peak it off right at the snare or whatever follows the hit. The overheads do all the work really. I just want the dynamics on the attack from the hits. I then get the overheads after I bring the snare where I like it, and mix to taste. The tom hit are last BTW. I usually mute them until I get the 4 mics how I want. When all said and done, I buss the entire 8 tracks in this case out to a stereo AUX track. Add a overall EQ, a Rcomp and set it to drums and tweek accordingly to having NO CLIPPING. I will eventually be bussing then to a new track through a pair of EL-8 distressors, but that is soon, but not soon enough.

That is how I do it for the drums. I treat the guitars in the same manner with the stereo AUX track.

Looking to get a few good pre-amps (Vintech 473, API 3124+) that will bypass the digi pre's and use the 5-8 inputs. That will bump it up a notch for sure. Then it is HD time...

Hope that this helps!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

IntelDoc,

I hear ya' about nasally vox. I don't know what mic. You are using on the vox, however, if you have a large capsule condenser mic. ala. U87 or the like, that can help make a nasally vocal more full. I have even gotten good results with a 421 on vox. As far as out of tune vox... that is a toughie, the obvious solution make the singer go line by line and loop record him; or use auto tune to tighten em' up a bit. I am sure you have thought of all this stuff, I am just posting it for posterity’s sake. I am really impressed with your drum sounds on the top end of the kit, as I said IMHO, just a tad more kick drum and its a perfect sounding kit, which is the toughest instrument to record.

eidtor,
I am using the TLM-103 on the vocals. Can use the NTK if needed, but the TLM works for his voice. THey came over tonight and agreed to retaking the tracks. I think that it will be better...

I have Auto-Tune, but I really DO NOT like it at all.... Waste really unfortunately. Just sonds too fake IMHO. The kick is bumped a notch and I did some other tweeks to bring it out. Sounds better... Lil' ducking never hurts, but I think I got it sittin' pretty.

Thanks again, and I will post when I can..

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Krone,
Just listened to "Savior". Cool song by the way! Really dark and dynamic...I like the solo section alot. Can't criticize the guitar panning because I love that stuff! Hell, Jimmy Page's panning on What Is And What Should Never Be was sloppy and almost silly, but it works for the song and the vibe. Same here.
But I really think you should try to get your mp3s encoded at a higher bitrate (at least 128). A 64mbps mp3 doesn't really cut it because you can't get into the true depth of the recording. It would take us a little longer to download (this one took just a few seconds because it's smaller) but it's worth it. I think 192k is really decent..almost CD quality. But 128 is the average BR around here. I couldn't really put a detailed ear on it because the artifacts from the mp3 are too prevalent.
Other than that, nice job. The drums are a little dry and distant for my liking (I like them more 'in your face') but that's probably what you were going for. I hear similar sounding drums on other songs in that genre all the time so I'm sure it's all good.

Roy,
Deep Scarlett is great! As usual you continue to showcase your unique and tasty style. I think I'd recognize one of your songs even if I stubled upon the middle of it fumbling around the radio dial!!
So much depth and space to your soundfield! Really makes me feel like my mixes are compressed to death and narrow as hell!!
Do I have your permission to mix a Compilation CD of some of your stuff with custom segues, etc. for my own personal use??
My guess is that 60 continuous minutes of your material all blended together nicely could work as a "mood setter"... ifyaknowwhatimean....

Hello All,

I'd be grateful for your feedback regarding my mixing/mastering skills, or the lack thereof, and any tips you can give me regarding how to get the best sounding recording - plugins, etc.

Here's my setup:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Robert,

I like the song a lot, very well written, nice vocals, lyrics. Here is what I would do to tighten up the mix a tad, just my thoughts. It seems like all the drums and percussion could use a tad more overall volume as they are getting lost in the mix, especially the snare. The snare needs to be turned up in proportion to the kit... perhaps less verb on the drums... or less tail on the verb.

I would use just a bit less verb on the vox as well, as you are a strong singer so that needs to be highlighted, not hidden! I might even try a mix where the vocals are more in your face with less efx; and see how an intimate vocal feel (ala. Dave Matthews) works with the tune...

When you break into the part where the lyric is "she sails on"... the hard elec guitar (panned left) needs to be eq'ed to be a bit less muddy, I would cut some boxy freq's, around 400hz and add a bit of 1k or 2k to define it more in that break. As I listen again while I type... the tune grows on me.

Also the song might have gotten a bit squashed in mastering also.... More L1, Less C1. Although as a mastering engineer, (I have a lot to say on the subject too much to even begin to go into here, so work with what you have) its always best to go to another room to master. Never mix and master in the same room as it encourages mix mistakes to snowball...

Its really a very good song in my opinion, ...very strong material, with just a few moves here and there, you have a world class mix. I think the vox and lyrics are very strong. Well done.

Just my 2/100th of a buck.

Robert,
Dig the song and think that it has a lot of potential. Volume needs to be bumped a notch.

Please e-mail me directly at my studio address. Go below and there is a link on the contact page.

I am listening on my small computer monitors at work, but I hear a slight phase in the vocals at the end of the song? (Editor you hear that?) May be EQ though, cannot tell until I pipe it through the monitors at home.

E-mail me though. Have some questions for you and thoughts..

Doc,

Ya', I hear a dip in the vox at the end. Also the entire mix seems to be a bit low in volume Vs. other posts. I wondered if that happened in mastering. If he remixes the song as I suggested....(do you agree with my take on the mix or not Doc)?.... and emails it to me as an .mp3 I would be willing to do a professional mastering job on it (as pro as .mp3's get in their limited range) and email it back to him.. As the mix is at this point, it would be corrective mastering, which I like to avoid except in the case where there is no chance of a remix. Its really a strong song, with strong performances with great potential. I could bump it up to slamming and broadcast quality in a few minutes. Let me know Robert...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Editor,
From what I hear, YES! I agree with you. Like I said, I am in "Cube World HELL" at DIA and really cannot crank it up. Defense Contractor types seem to panic at sudden increases in volume levels I was thinking that he could maybe post the uncompressed NON-AFFECTED WAVE file for either you or I to mess with mastering. At least fix the vocals, I think that he may have slammed it on the C4 or whatever it was he was using and then slammed it on the L1. I really like the L2, and Calvins way to master. That is how I have adapted myself to and it seems to work. The levels were incredibly low, that is certain. Bump up the snare, and kick a tad. Pull out some of the VERB! Too much! and hopefully bounce unaffected on the Master fader and give us a link to see if other ears make it work.

I agree it has some possibilities, and yes it sounds like a phase issue is happening towards the end? Cannot tell until later...

Hey Doc and Editor,

Thank you very much for your feedback!! This is great!! I gotta say though, you guys are losing me already!!
L1, C4?, i thought that's what them military-types use to blow stuff up...

The drums are pretty bad aren't they? It's all on one track in PT since I'm taking it straight outta the drum machine - I really need to get BFD so I can have separate tracks for each piece of the drum kit. However, I'll lower the reverb and EQ it to bring out the snare more.

I actually doubled up on the vocals for the chorus and used more reverb on the second track (would that explain the phase?) I'll reduce the reverb on the vocals and get rid of the 2nd track? I think I'll add a harmony to the chorus though to make it more interesting...

The levels!!! Tell me about it, I'm going to go back and increase the gain on each track individually to bring it into the yellow, before sending it through the master fader. I have a tendency to record the tracks that I know are quieter at lower levels - bad habit eh?

This is a big help you guys, thanks! I'll get a new un-mastered version up as soon as I can (I think i'm upgrading my PC tonight though, so it might be a few days)

Very nice. Man you got a lot goig on in that tune. Everything sems to sit really well. The only problm I had was the vocals were not as "out front" as i would have liked, at times. It was hard to tell determine the lyrics (this is not due to the processing). I think it is a volume thing. Again, sounds really good, man.

Hey, what did you use to process the vocals around the 3 min mark?

way behind on my listening. I've heard the stuff thru page 133, all of which was cool. Intel Doc, yours really jumped out at me, nice work.

Here's my latest. There's a few spots in the guitar solo I think I'll want to overdub.

roy, I like the mandolin samples, nice work KroNe.

CreationStudios, IE crashed when I tried your link.

RobertM, I like the song and production a lot, I'd like to hear a little more low end, though. My 2 cents.

"spirals" has a very nice groove and sharp drum programming.

Mike, nice gtr sounds, I liked "nikki's song". what mics are you using?
roy, the remix sounds really good. I don't think I heard the first one, the link was out of date, but great percussion sounds. How did you get them?

DaB, very cool stuff, great sounding production. Reason, I presume? What are those percussion samples?

Thanks ev,

I wish I could play his fast pieces on my violin, I'll stick to Kreisler. I was so happy to find this piece. I truly love Paganini, how he revolutionized the violin. While no one can critique Heifetz contributions to his music, my favorite is Salvatore Accardo. I was fortunate to see Mr Accardo live, what an amazing man !

My mics are the Studio Projects C4's, I just got them and wanted to immediately try them out. My guitar on the other hand is about 28 years old, my mother purchased in Mexico on a trip. She knows nothing about instruments and its back has a huge crack in it, but man it has a nice sound. It's a keeper !!!

Thank you again.

Hey Gene,

Seems as though you're a fellow violinist. Have you tried playing Novacek's Perpetuum Mobile? That piece is very fast, but once you begin playing it it begins to play itself . I'd highly recommend it if you like the fast pieces but Paganini's works are a bit too complicated.

Have fun,

hey ev,

Yes I do have that. I'll have to revisit that again. I love the Paganini pieces for violin and guitar, supposedly he wrote those for a woman who had was seeing and she played guitar. I just love this stuff.

Take Care,
Gene

Gene,
Very nice job on the Paganini song...the guitar is recorded very well...this sounds like a really nice guitar. What kind is it?
thanks, Roy

Its great as is.

editor,
Forgive my 'rudeness' for not replying to the above post until now, but things just got too busy there for a while.

I know 'Deep in Scarlett' has a unique vibe about it. I wrote it when I was 18 ( and into tunings on acoustic), and just decided to do it now in PT. The 12-string guitars are tuned down to C (very low). The upper chords ascend upward from lo G, Bb, C, Eb, F, Gb, hi G...then drop back down...while the bass/root notes vary and dictate what the overall chord is. So I was basically playing with theory back then.
Anyway, for the solo I grabbed an old Fender Squier instead of my good Strat. I liked it's personality, so I kept it. I miked a small Fender amp with a Rode NT1, used an ampitube setting I had 'tweaked', and used a compressor on it.
For percussion, I've been using ReDrum with my own collection of samples for a while now. On that first rough mix you heard, the percussion was mostly lite stuff...small congas, rims, timbali... but for this new mix, I went heavier with toms and snare, and I think it's much better.
Anyway, I'm on to other stuff now.
thanks, Roy

Ok, after months of picking up tips from the gang here, here's my first mix. This is somewhere between rough and final mix for my album (need to ride the faders for lead guitar). How can I improve this?

Thanks for listening

DaBasstard/Brian,
That was cool...there's some great stuff there. (I may get you to show me some new tricks... ). Where was this remix contest again?

Roy - the new mix of Deep Scarlett sounds great. The chord progression reminds me a little of Pink Floyd's Animals (in a good way)

Gene - The Paganini piece sounds really good. I had forgotten how much I liked his work. Time to break out my old sheet music!

BP - Nice tune. I like the main lead guitar tone; nice and warm. What's your setup?

dB - That tune has a great flow. All samples?

Here's a new piece that I have been working on: Your Love

It's not properly mixed or mastered, and it needs a "real" second verse, but I'm not sure when I'm going to get to it, so I wanted to post it while I was thinking about it. Think of it as the "before" photo...

Very nice clean sound on Nikki's Song. Wish I could get the same. The opening and ending guitar has good sound, too. Couple nice chord changes in the middle, too.
