The specs say 32 ch I/O but i cant record or mix on any channel greater than 16 on my board. I don't want to get my monitor mix back on 1/2. Presonus uses 33/34 for return monitoring. I would settle for 31/32, but nothing over 16 works. So since I have to use 1/2 for monitoring I really have a simultaneous recording max of 14 tracks. Is that right? 17/34 appear in the I/O matrix. Just no audio. (ARTIST). It looks like they just cut my board in half.

What specs are you looking at?

Pro Tools Artist limits:
32 tracks
16 simultaneous inputs.

Spelt out very clearly: https://www.avid.com/pro-tools/comparison.

Tracks limits and I/O limits are frequently quite different.

Edit: had to think how Pro Tools normally does this. Assuming Artist behaves the same as Studio etc. then the way around this is to remap I/O in the interface/onboard mixer to be I/O ports physically below the limit, if the interface supports that. No idea if the Presonus can do that. Maybe you can physically connect the monitor mix back to some other inputs if there is no other way. Or upgrade to Pro Tools Studio (64 IO limit) or use a different DAW. Lots of great DAWs out there, Reaper would be top of my list on Windows. And there is Presonus' own Studio One (which I've never used).

Use Presonus' Capture to grab all 32 tracks. Then you can move those into Pro Tools if it's your prefered editing/mixing environment.
