My latest tune "Is It Me?" features my very talented friend Al on the Harmonica. I did all the rest of the production save the guitar leads which Pablo helped out on.

All comments welcome. Enjoy.

Bastiaan,

Jorge's right...killer... I love your style man. The guitars and also the vocals on 'Lose Your Love Tonight' are great. Your version blows the orig away, IMO.....
What did you say you're using(guitar)? It sounds great all over the neck. Must be a fine instrument...

Mr. Seven, very nice job! your friends are pretty talented too! Lots of style, I liked it.

thanks

bey12,
I really liked the vibe of ¨Underground¨, the thing I would aim at polishing would be the drum sound and accuracy(are you using a click?). I liked the creativity though.

gracepoint,
you´re right, with a better drum sound the tracks would really sound GOOD. I liked the guitars heavyness and clarity, nice vocal production and delivery. Cool bass sound on ¨N¨. Good songs

Ok....

A few days ago I tried to post a link to a remix I was doing of the old 80's song "Take on Me" by A-ha. (Some of you may remember it, some of you may hate it....what can I say, I am a child of the 80's )

Yahoo wouldn't take the file, but I got it posted anyway.

Here is the link:
Take on Me

The file says it's a TEXT file [ .txt]. After you download it, change/ rename the '.txt' suffix to a '.mp3' and it should play fine in your machine.

Sorry for the hassle, it's just these people are Nazi's. I am not selling the song, or making any profit whatsoever....it was just an experiment I did because I was bored.

Anyway, the song was redone like this:

I imported the original track into PT. Chopped the first 2-3 bars and exported that into ReCycle. Made a REX loop, and then imported that into Reason.

I then re-constructed the song adding a drum n' bass feel to the piece. After composing was done, I exported the song as a 24bit file and re-imported into PT, where I mastered it.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Lethargy,

I liked the heavy guitars on When memories die. I found the drums a little overcompressed, maybe? The snare sounded like its attack was being stopped or something...

Too Good Mix is a cool song, guitars sounded nice and good vocal production. Again I felt the drums kinda thin..

On goodbye too I though the snare gets kinda lost.

I general I noticed good vocal sound, maybe a little loud, but that´s the trend nowadays. Good guitar sound, I think..
Try to let the drums come through nice and punchy, maybe you´re just scooping too much in the low mids?

Keep in mind I´m a drummer, and I´m stoned

that said...

Kamurah,

I dig your remix, I like your ear.

cheers

here's a collaborative effort by me and some friends. its a bob marley cover. i did the music and arranging and the drum loops are original material that my friend, aaron, and i recorded for a loop project. my friends from the GifteD Crew did the vocals and i recorded and mixed it down.

constructive criticism very much welcomed. thanks in advance to everyone that peeps it....

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

da BaSsTaRd!

sounds great! If I was to get real picky, I would say that maybe the toms have too much low mids? Also there is a doubled line at 2:38 that sounds a little funny.....timingwise?

Great sounding mix and cool performance!

DaBasstard,

Kinky reggaeeeee! I love this mix the most. The tom Jorge mentioned does jump out at ya, but it's a good mixture overall. I'm still surprised these are the Kiwiloops (drums)that you guys created. Great job man...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

da BaSsTaRd!,

I like it a lot!
I have heard a lot of crappily recorded Reggae music....but this aint it.

Good vibe, good performance.

I think everything sits nicely in the mix....I don't hear the tom trouble that Jorge mentioned...it does sound like maybe the kick drum steps on the bass a little (frequency wise). You've got lots of low energy in that kick. (the loops are killer though)
Did you use Waves S1 on this track? Stereo image is very wide....which I actually prefer to the almost "hypermono" style that some Reggae recordings have.

The only other thing I notice is that I can sometimes hear the edits on the loops. (I think that is what I am hearing). But that is being really really picky.

Again, I think the song is great, and would like to hear more of your stuff.
VERY PROFESSIONAL!! Two thumbs up.

Cheers

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Jorge,

Hey, thanks for listening. It's funny you mentioned that about the snare being over compressed in the "When Memories Die" song. You're like the 5th person to say that to me, and yet, the snare is hardly compressed at all. The kid that played the drums on that track doesn't hit rim shots, so there's not that nice crack to the snare, I think that's a big part of it. Being a drummer myself, I'm always interested in bettering the drums sounds, so your comments are definately appreciated. And that vocal thing you mentioned about them being loud, I totally agree, and I'm so not a big fan of those overly loud upfront vocals, but everyone seems to be liking them lately, so I had to do them. Oh well. Gotta make people happy. Thanks again for listening.

Da Basstard: That's a rockin' song you have there. I'd love to know what you were using to record those vocals with (besides good talent of course They had a very nice full sound that I can't seem to ever figure out. I didn't really notice the tom thing all that much either that was mentioned above, but I think I am hearing the same thing Kamurah was talking about with the edit thing. Could just be an mp3 mess up though, but every now and then I'm hearing a tiny click kinda sound. Other than that though, I think it sounds great.

Mike

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

it might be that the attack is set too fast?
try a slow attack/fast release combo if you haven´t already.....
even if the attack is not all there (read weak drummer), you can sorta create it this way. What compressor are you using?

da BaSsTaRd! 02-18-2002 08:29 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

thanks guys... been working on that for a few weeks.

the vocals were tracked through my akg c3000b > focusrite voicemaster > 001. the male part is tripled (panned left, right & center) during the verses. then those tracks are sent to an aux with bombfactory LA-2A set to max compression (100% gain reduction) and nothing on the 3 vocal tracks. the 4 tracks together end up fat and smooth. they were recorded in my bathroom. i took every blanket i had and hung them over the shower curtain and towel racks to dampen the room. worked out ok...

during the verses, i put some chorus on one backup vocal and panned it left. on the other backup i put a harmonizer and panned it right.

the bass was tracked through my sansamp RBI into the 001. the guitars went through my POD.

kamurah, you're totally right about S1 and the drum edits. unfortunately, when we were in the studio recording the loops, we didn't record any construction hits. next time.... i'll try to mask those edits using midi drums. a good crash will cover just about anything!

i'll work some eq on the drums too. keep it coming!

peace out.....

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Da Basstard... I'm hearing it as I write and I have to say I'm impressed, very nice.

How is it you say you triple the lead vocal without phasing...?

da BaSsTaRd! 02-18-2002 06:42 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

record 3 separate tracks for the same part in 3 passes. since each one is unique, there are no timing issues for phasing to come into play....

Don't know how you guys feel about Mac users posting in here... haha. It's all about the music anyway, right?

My Digi001 gets used mainly to record jam sessions. My friends love listening back to what we do and bug me until I give them new CDs. Since June I've done about 25 of these jams (2.3gigs of MP3s). It's all improvised/first take stuff with me struggling on the drums (I feel I'm a better recording guy than drummer). This stuff forces me to get better at both hobbies, though.

It's a great time to live when I can afford to own such a high quality hardware/software combo as a college student.

Hi Folks,

Thought I'd join in and post my bands website, www.thebandbrown.com, on which there are the 4 mp3s from our EP. We're based in Dublin, Ireland and have just started gigging. We recorded all songs in my house using a Digi001 (using TC Gold channel as pre-amp and AD/DA) and various outboard gear.

Music is sort of pop, but with a bit of a rock egde. Been likened to David Gray / Coldplay / Radiohead (more when we play live).

Thanks for listening. You'll need fast connects unfortunately.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey all,
Boy, it's been way to long since I attempted to catch up on this thread. There is so much good stuff going on here. I haven't had enough time this morning to try and listen to everything, so I'm just picking out a few over the last couple of pages. Think I'll have to burn a CD and start listening at work or something. (Interesting idea - DUC CD's!)

That said, here goes:

Dr. John: Ordinary Girl - Liked the tune a lot.

tcnort: HeyYeah - Very fun. Good sound, good tune. My wife walked by and asked where the CD was so she could listen to more.

Milco: Please do more work like 'Air'. I could listen to this stuff for hours. You're a talented guy. Keep going.

soundsurfr: Ran across 'Forward & Back'. Don't know if this is what you wanted me to find, but I'm sure glad I did. Bookmarked it to check out the others soon. Is this all Pro Tools? I like the forward/backward things especially right around 2:30. Great job.

Bastian: Basket Case - cool tune. Multiple listens. Unfortunately couldn't get 'Use Your Love Tonight' to play. Tried and tried and tried. If Roy likes it, I want to listen...

Darren: Al is a good harp player, isn't he?! You captured a great sound there.

gracepoint: I like the energy here. Cool stuff. (Sunday morning - can't give it enough volume to do it justice!) Like the guitars in D.I.P.

bey12: Clutzy - fun track - I like that I can't quite get my footing when listening to it. Lots of fun stuff in there. David Byrne, circus music (!! My thought anyway!!)

Lethargy: Mike - your stuff is so sonically different. (Good different!!) Some good sounds here. I like the beginning of "Two Good Mix". The guitars sound great. "Goodbye" has a sound all it's own. Again, guitars, guitar, guitars! Where did you find these English guys in New Jersery.

Da BaSsTaRd: As you already know - Kinky Reggae is very cool and your work is great.

Kamurah: Hsuiede is a very good track. I like the way it builds a lot. I like that the energy feel positive. I will definately be back to listen to more. Bookmarked.

Roy: Tried to listen to some legendary music this morning but the server isn't cooperating. Will try again later.

bexarametric: Sweet Dreams has a nice feel. How much are you doing in Acid vs. Pro Tools? I'll be back and check more of your library out later.

Anyway, I've sent a nice hour this mornign checking stuff out. I feel like it's time for me to do some more music muself. Thanks for sharing guys. This is all so energizing!

Cheers,
Mark

HEY MARK,

To answer your question. I don't really do any of it in Acid anymore. Not my last 5 or so tracks anyway. I used to. It's just that Acidplanet.com is a great place to get feedback from other musicians. I actually write all my MIDI parts in Reason and all my audio parts, usually guitar or vocals only, in Pro Tools. Then I may edit waves in Wavelab or Sound Forge.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

ok, here's another one:

I'm Not Feelin' You

i wrote and played the music. the drums are more loops that me and my friend, aaron, made. the girl is China from the GifTeD Crew (same as kinky reggea).

the vocals are a little thick and i can't seem to thin them out without losing what's good about them. any ideas would be great....
