MP3 Import broken in 2021.10?

Well, that was short lived, just installed 2021.10 and one of the 1st things I've noticed is that I can no longer import .mp3 audio files! Anyone else seeing this?

Went back to 2021.7 and all is still fine.

Haven’t “updated” yet, but I do thank you for the heads up. I’m still displeased about them eliminating “import from CD” a few releases ago. They sure keep introducing more workflow killers.

Have just installed, can confirm I DO NOT have this problem on Mac Catalina, PT|Ultimate.

Hmmm, I'm using an Intel Mac Mini running Mojave 10.14.6, neither drag n drop nor Import audio work with .mp3's (just get random rubbish) as I said, switched back to 2021.7 and all works again???

Just tried to drag and drop an MP3 file into Protools 2021.10 and it worked as expected. I'm running Big Sur 11.6 on an Intel i7 MacBook Pro 14.3.

Perhaps you got a corrupted install. Try downloading again and reinstalling.

Everything was working nicely here on my High Sierra 10.13.6 partition (haven't attempted to install 2021.10 on any newer partitions yet), without any of the visual bugs others are reporting such as VCA's, Timelines, etc. until I tried this MP3 import. (WAV import works fine)
It imports an MP3 but the dialog boxes, OK, and process is pretty damn S-L-O-W. then all I get is distorted, spiky, full-scale digital DANGEROUS garbage.
Keeps your monitors MUTED if you attempt this. You could BLOW them.
This is a deal-killer.
C'mon Avid. Get your act together. It should never have passed beta.
You need to fix this now.

N.B. at the very minimum alert all your customers who have access to this update to NOT IMPORT MP3 and warn them of the danger. People could lose some very expensive equipment.

Good That is what I am running and have been advised by Avid to stay on for my setup here.

Trashcan MacPro running the latest Big Sur and PT 2021.10. Just tried importing an MP3 via the import audio window and it worked fine. Session is at 48K and so was the MP3.

For those having issues, are you also having to convert the sample rate? Is your incoming MP3 a different SR than your session?

Hi Darryl,
Unfortunately it is a client-supplied file so I cannot share it. But I am more than happy to carry out any surgery on it.

I had no clue what causes Pro Tools to display the Type: "MP3" vs "Quicktime" so wanted to play around.

I've certainly seen where import shows "Type: MP3" or "Type: Quicktime". Looking through mp3s I have (mostly stuff in iTunes, no my iTunes is not mp3, it's mostly all ALAC, just some odd stuff in mp3). I found mp3 files purchased on Amazon Music that Pro Tools import reports as "Type: MP3" while most other files get remote as "Type: Quicktime".

I thought I'd run some quick tests with ffmpeg to try to mess with the MP3 files and see if I could change what import was showing. Files showing as "Type: Quicktime" in Pro Tools import had the encoded_by/Writing Library field set to "iTunes v6.x.x.x". But clobbering all the metadata did not turn "Type: Quicktime" to "Type: MP3".

But if I clobbering all the metadata in a file reporting as "Type: MP3" and then Pro Tools Import would say it was "Type: Quicktime" even when the encoder was actually Lavf59.8.100 from ffmpeg. So something to do with that metadata changes this file detection.

Playing with flipping around other things with these mp3 files, variable to fixed rate, other encoded_by values, changing from Stereo to Joint Stereo. Reencoding to the same bitrate, etc. and none of that changed what Pro Tools import was reporting for "Type". But this was a very quick and dirty test.

Since this seems to be a metadata thing I'm kinda doubting whether Pro Tools import reporting "Type: MP3" or "Type: Quicktime" is causing your problem. And I have no problems importing any of these files, including ones I've screwed with with ffmpeg.

But now I'm curious, and I wonder if Jeffro might be able to ask the developers just what Pro Tools import is looking at here to determine whether Type is "MP3" or "Quicktime"--I'm starting to wonder if this differentiation actually makes sense.
