I guess I can talk you through the snare drum tuning process. Do you record live drums?
Why not just have me do the drums for you.
Just send me a stereo mix. Even better mono on R Click on L, and I will record 8 tracks of drums for you. I can then send the PTLE files via FTP.

for those of you looking to do drums also guys, I would highly reccomend last years issue of Tape Op that had the article about tuning drums in it. Like Doug mentioned, it is sort of an art...

Doug, that is soo kind of you. I have a snare I picked up in a second had shop that I randomly beat on sometimes. Inteldoc had a 'dude' on his kick, but this thing is so beaten up it looks like a football crowd helicopter shot. I don't know if it would even be possible to tune it lol.

If you're really serious I'll email you. There are a couple of things I have that I could never make the drums work for.

Hit me with an email. I am going to Disney World this week with the family, but I will work with the material when I get home on 7/3.

I am always looking for some interesting collaboration. Your music is just a little "out there" and will allow me some nice freedom.

If the track you send was recorded to a click, please indicate the tempo. Otherwise, I will map it out or just "wing it."

Drumkid: First one sounds like a very fun song there. Kinda sounds a little bit like it was done live at a performance venue as opposed to in a studio, but that is cool caus I can hear a little bit of the instruments bleeding over into the other mics and what not.

Second one: man, you're brother is a very good guitarist there! one thing I might suggest for the recording aspect is that the acoustic sounds just a little bit boomy. You might want to try pulling the mic back about 6in. to 2ft. just as a starting point and move it around a little to find what is called a guitars "sweet spot". A lot of times I will mic off axis pointing towards the bridge of a guitar with one condenser, and pointing towards where the neck meets the body of an acoustic with a second condenser which makes an awesome pair and captures most of the performance very well. Sometimes I will also mic over the guitarists ear right by their ear caus as a guitarist we sometimes put our ear where the sound is best on our instrument...

over all both are cool tracks. good work!

FSM,
I like your music. I think the intro is a little long on Dont Walk Away. I think there should be some "big" melodic guitar from the very beginning. Maybe some kind of melodic guitar "hook" you can bring back later.

I have 3 comments for the recording quality:
1. The vocals seem a little soft and maybe "dull."
2. The lead guitar needs to be "bigger" and "in your face." It sounds mono and dry.
3. The snare drum is thin and the cymbals are a little soft.

Maybe some of the local pros can suggest HOW to fix these things.

Good band. This is not really my genre, but I like the music.

Thanks for the kind words! Honestly we recorded those about a year ago, and whatever we did then has pretty much become locked somehwere in my brain where I can't reach the memory. But we're recording again in the next few weeks, so as we do stuff I'll trty and keep you informed! Thanks!
